Where was Pie in this deal?

While I realize Rich Hardin spends more time on the DL than the mound, he's an ace when he's out there. That said, it would have been nice to make it hurt a little bit for the Cubs to acquire him. Where was Felix Pie in this deal? At this point, he probably doesn't have the strike-zone judgement that the A's typically covet. But if he does mature in that area, he has all of the physical tools to be an all-star caliber center fielder.

Cubs would have laughed at BB for even making the suggestion. for trade value, Pie = Harden without Harden’s track record of injuries.

re

“Pie = Harden without Harden’s track record of injuries” is certainly one of the more insane things I’ve seen written on this site.

coberloco….are you serious? Because I laughed, but wasn’t sure if I should have. It was more of an awkward laugh.

by asyouwish33 on Jul 8, 2008 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions

then why would we want him?

not that I’m avoiding the point or anything

Ok, you can't switch positions

first you say that pie = harden.
Then, when we say pie sucks
you say “ok! that’s what I’d say!”

stick to a position, or concede it. Don’t shift.

damn I hate being intelligent

ok, Pie does suck (now), but as far as baseball “experts” are concerned, his trade value is very high because of his “potential”.

just to be clear, that’s the logic behind it… I’m not saying it’s correct.

by coberloco on Jul 8, 2008 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions

what the hell are you talking about

explaining something badly and having people not understand it doesn’t make you “intelligent”.

We should have a Pie-sucking contest

I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

Wait.

A healthy 35 starts a year Harden has the same value as Felix Pie?

I just want to make sure I’m getting this right.

Apparently the Cubs were in talks with the Mariners for Erik Bedard

and the package for Bedard was what we got for Harden, Plus Pie. This from my buddy in Chicago.

The thing is,

there was no Pie…and then we ship Gaudin too?!? WTF?

by arch on Jul 9, 2008 1:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Sound it out

Pi-A. As in, 3.141593*A.

So, just slightly better than AAA.

to hell with pie,

If we’re giving up Harden and Gaudin, Vitters should have been included.

by Kallus on Jul 8, 2008 7:38 PM PDT reply actions

exactly!

why wasn’t vitters included? I think we gave up too much and for once it looks like Billy didn’t get as much as he could have.

This is like Huddy, deja vu

Remember we got these bunch of no-names…(“prospect” Meyer, Chuck Thomas and Juan Cruz…and then fans felt that yeah, maybe it’ll work out. Maybe BB got gems in the trade for no-namers. Lo and behold it was indeed a trade that stunk that time and stinks until today. I know w/ trades you win some, you lose some…but come on, unless Harden comes down injured again this year, A’s were just fleeced.

JD's list of current A's OFs he'd rather have than Pie

This list is an “in the organization” thing and not saying they’d all be better on the major league squad right this very minute. It’s also in no particular order:

Carlos Gonzalez
Jack Cust
Ryan Sweeney
Aaron Cunningham
Danny Putnam
Corey Brown
Matt Murton (yes, I think he’s a more valuable player)
Travis Buck
Matt Sulentic
Emil Brown… ok, no, just kidding.

I didn’t even mention Robnett or Herrera or anybody below Stockton. But you can add Dixon or Barfield on the list probably, too.

I really, really don’t like Pie as anything more than a defensive replacement, despite his gaudy minor league numbers.

Barfield's numbers are fuggly

63 AB, 0 (!!) BB, SLG in the .300s.

Yeah, I think I’d take Pie over him. I know you’re exaggerating to make a point here, but you’re overdoing it.

Putnam? No.

The rest, yeah.

I’d take Pie over Putnam.
