Who do you see as our OF's of the Future?
At the very beginning of the season I would have said Car Gon, T Buck and I really did not have an idea who would be the third guy maybe Deorfia maybe not. I have been shocked to see Travis Buck struggle as much as he did this season I hope it was due to injuries. Now it is pretty clear to me at least that Ryan Sweeney and Car Gon are poised to become strongholds out there. Who the third guy is I am not so sure I would like to see Travis Buck be that guy but after his struggles this season who knows if he will be that guy. I would like to see maybe a little more power from that position. Taking a look at our minor league teams it doesn't seem like we have much power in the OF waiting to come up. Anyway those are just my thoughts I was curious to see what everyone here thinks about or future in the OF.
Thanks

When is “the future”? 2009? 2012?

Well, it makes a difference
I mean, my dream outfield for 2012 is Corey Brown in left, Rashun Dixon in center and Carlos Gonzalez in right, with Cunningham as the #4.
For obvious reasons, that’s not happening next year.

LOL I see your point and I totally forgot about Corey Brown.
I do think that we do have some potential power outfielders in our minors see a couple post below.

As follows
Sweeney in CF, CarGon in RF, PTBNL in LF. As I’ve said before, Sweeney’s bat plays better in CF, CarGon supposedly has a prototypical bat for a corner spot, and they both have absolute cannons for arms. My fear is that if Sweeney is put in a corner spot, the A’s will be forever looking for an upgrade—with his power, well, that dog just won’t hunt.
As for the last spot in the OF, a RH power bat would be ideal, but doesn’t seem to be coming from within the organization. As it is, having so many DH/1B types on this team, maybe it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to keep Cust out in LF and letting some other schlub with even less defensive prowess man the DH spot. I mean, hell, we let Jeremy Giambi play LF, right?
Ryan Sweeney: I probably irrationally embraced him before you did.

How about us trading a couple of those 1B/DH guys and a good relief pitcher for Carlos Gomez from the Twins?

Or - Carter has been playing a bit in the outfield and he has power.
So a future of Cargon, Sweeney, Cunningham and Carter sounds ok if Carter can handle that position.

Cunningham
There seems to be a general feeling around here that Cunningham is a lock as an everyday starter. I’d like to believe it—he’s yet another one of outfielders acquired by Beane who has the defensive prowess to play a corner spot or CF in a pinch. Unfortunately, there are also fears (by Baseball America, for one) that Cunningham is going to end up as another tweener—not enough power for a corner spot, not enough D for CF. They peg him as a 4th outfielder if he doesn’t end up developing that power.
It raises an interesting question. Over the past few years, Beane has tended to assemble outfields of 2 or more CFers, usually sacrificing corner OF-esque power along the way. Maybe—since power is a highly valued commodity—he really believes that lockdown defense will excuse lack of hitting. In short, maybe Beane isn’t too worried about drastically improving the offense.

The last couple years we were screaming for a CF when Kotsay got hurt and then after the surgery.
So now we have fast, good to great defensive CF types in the outfield who may or may not become power hitters. Sweeney has the potential to be a power hitter and so does Cunningham.

Cunningham
has had a minor league career SLG% of .480 so its not to shabby. While batting 300+ and an OBP of .376. Hes got alot of potential.
When will then be now? Soon.

I agree, As I recall didn't Cunningham have a pretty good spring and was getting close to the possibility of making the club when Cargon went down?

I think the potential of Cunningham with that of Sweeney we have two good corner OFs who can both play CF if needed
With Cargon in CF we have the potential, and that is all we can look at, at this point, to have a great outfield.

-1 billion
Offensively, they just got Carlos Gomez and his name is Eric Patterson.
(Not an exact comparison, but neither guy is ever going to hit well enough in the majors)

God, if only
Carlos Gomez is a great center fielder. He’s also young enough that he could learn how to hit (which I will fully stipulate he does not currently know how to do).

Rasmus sucking this year
is the reason why there’s some slight possibility of the A’s getting him…

After the Mulder trade I doubt that SL would trade with us for a pitcher. But you never know.

How come everyone is down on Buck? If you recall he only started last year because
of injuries, he did miss an opportunity last year to develop more in AAA…plus injuries. I really hope Buck comes back and plays the way he played last year and I’m sure he’s going to be better. Three cheers for Buck!!!
