Jemile Weeks is close to signing, and Inoa has made more than Duke.
Weeks likely to sign today: The A's are close to coming to terms with their top pick (12th overall) in the June draft, University of Miami second baseman Jemile Weeks, and they could announce that he has signed as soon as today, according to several sources.
Weeks, who is the younger brother of Milwaukee's Rickie Weeks, will get a signing bonus in the $2 million range.
Duchscherer, 30, has been playing professional baseball since he was 18 and he has not had a contract of more than one year. He noted that 16-year-old Dominican right-hander Michael Inoa, who got a $4.25 million bonus from Oakland last week, "has already made more than I have in my whole career. I'm not complaining, obviously, but the security (of a multiyear deal) would be nice."

Is it?
I dunno, as someone who wasn’t a big fan of the pick, I was kind of hoping he would hold out for a zillion dollars.

Because then we'd get no value for our first round pick?
by nevermoor on Jul 8, 2008 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
We'd get #12A in next year's draft
If we didn’t sign Weeks. I think PT is saying he’d rather have that than Weeks.
by BlameChannel53 on Jul 8, 2008 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I guess
But there’s no doubt in my mind that even if Weeks wasn’t the sexiest pick he’s more valuable than a #13 a year later. The discount value of future draft picks is usually pretty high.
by nevermoor on Jul 8, 2008 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
This isn’t football, where there’s a reasonable assumption that you can “trade forward” to get immediate help for your big league squad. I don’t think there’s much of any discount to the value of a future pick relative to a pick this year.

Just imagine if the rule applied in the NFL
Don’t you think the Niners would have to strongly considering not signing Alex Smith to give themselves pick 1A in the next draft? The Niners were stuck drafting #1 in a year when there was no player worhty of a #1 pick, but they still had to pay Smith #1 money.

They might have signed him anyway
given how desperately the team needed a QB, but the point still holds.

Sure there is
Weeks +1 year of professional training is more valuable to an organization than Weeks now. Whether there is someone available in next year’s draft that overcomes that difference is something no one can know today, but there is certainly a discount.
by nevermoor on Jul 8, 2008 11:21 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's only true if you assume that sooner seasons are more important than later seasons
If your draft pick arrives at the big leagues sooner, he also becomes a free agent sooner.
It can be distinctly advantageous to line up players so that they arrive at the same or similar times. One way to do this is to pick high schoolers for a few years, then switch to college players. Another way is to defer your high draft picks via this method…
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

Not advocating for it
Just addressing the possibility. As a guy who loves the draft, and loves to see teams be creative, I would be very interested if some team actually took advantage of the rule in what they consider a down year.
There would be two huge downsides to such a move that I think make it unlikely to ever happen. First, knowing who will be available, healthy, and productive in a draft can be very hard to predict 12 months in advance. Second, intentionally drafting an actual human being with no intention of signing that person and costing them the opportuinty to go to another team that actually would want to sign them is a pretty shitty thing to do to a young player, and I think most teams would be reticent to pull such a maneuver.

Depends upon whether the player signed with Boras
If they did, all’s fair :-)

True
Pretty much every year there’s at least one guy who drops down to a lower selection spot than his talent warrants just because everyone knows is going to ask for a lot. So if you want to defer your pick, just choose that guy and refuse to pay him over slot.

OK, that's an ASG innovation I could support
If they named a fielding team and a hitting team (with no restrictions against “two-way” players), that could actually entice me to watch.
Say, 12 hitters, 12 fielders, and 12 pitchers for each squad. Lineup of 9 batters, irrespective of “position.”
I mean, the ASG as currently conceived and executed bears little resemblance to a real MLB game, so why not actually optimize the performance all the way ‘round?

Hell, if Kinsler gets into the game,
I’d even be happy enough with Pedroia staying for defense. Any player who isn’t an all-around good player (not just a good hitter) shouldn’t be there at all.

I checked this out this afternoon
It’s a display of Tribune sports sections from various major moments in A’s history, yearbooks, media guides and such things as “A’s News” magazine. Emphasis almost entirely on the Finley era and the first 10 years of the Haas era.
Included in the display are copies of the many books written about the A’s over the years, from Ron Bergman’s Mustache Gang to Don Marquez’ Generation A’s Fans. It made me think, when I’m starving for anything A’s on some rainy Saturday morning in January, I’ll go down to the library, flip through a bunch of these books and then sit down with Mustache Gang and devour it (for about the 20th time, but the first in over 30 years) in one sitting.

its that Selig/MLB doesn’t want them to be announced for fear that those contracts might affect other negotiations.

and
that’s not to mention the ability to go out and just pick up a spare Bobby Abreu or two.

and this is
the NYT, right?
Isn’t this wrong?
“We have been decimated by injuries,” Steinbrenner said. “I don’t remember a year this bad as far as injuries. It’s had a huge affect, it really has. Nobody wants to make excuses, but it’s reality.”
Effect, no?

from the sidebar on the main page
Athletics transferred INF Mike Sweeney to the 60-day disabled list.
Sweeney was supposed to rejoin the Athletics shortly after the All-Star break, but this news means he’ll be out until at least the last few days of the month. It does clear up a spot on the 40-man roster, though.

Well that means that there will be three 40 man roster slots open
for Murton, Gallagher and Patterson to join the team. Though they might send Patterson to AAA and have him play 2B or SS.
I am hoping that Murton means that Brown will be DFA’d though.
