Questions Abound!
With the latest loss by the A's in the windy city on Sunday there are many questions that need to be answered yet again!
First of all, I realize that it is a long season and we have half of it yet to go, however why did Geren rest Suzuki yet again when we did not have Sweeney or Gonzalez available for duty? This is no slight on Rob Bowen who did have a couple of RBI on Sunday and he has done an admirable job when called upon, but rather the fact that Suzuki rested when for the past month he has been one of the hottest hitters in the league!! When the A's are struggling to score runs you HAVE to put your best lineup on the field that you have available! Is Geren having a bit of a mid-life crisis?? Or has Kurt asked for time off because he is feeling run down and we haven't heard about it??
When I posted a comment about Bob Geren's decisions in the Angel series I knew that after this weekend we may lose ground and instead of being 4 games back, we find ourselves 6! Had the A's put a more reasonable lineup on the field in the final game at Anaheim earlier in the week we may have pulled out the victory and saved a couple of games in the standings! And after losing Saturday in Chicago it made Sunday's game even more important, yet Geren chose to rest Suzuki.? Puzzling indeed!
At this point the A's brass needs to do a level one diagnostic test as to why so many A's are ending up on the DL over the past few years! Much more than any other team and it is looking like it could be an organizational problem because these are younger players for the most part. (with the exception of F. Thomas & Chavez of course). Does Beane need to start looking closer at how these players are preparing themselves to play? One season is a fluke but now we are going into multiple seasons and a trend is clearly there!
Because of injuries, interesting decisions and some tough luck, the A's find themselves in a battle for a potential wild card. It does not appear that the Angels will be coming back to the pack, so the A's will need to do some scoreboard watching and pull for the Twins. Yankees, Red Sox/Rays and possibly the Rangers to start losing games! The A's need to run the table this week to have any shot at the Angels and that will include sweeping them at home next weekend to have any prayer of catching them in the second half. But if Geren decides to rest key players in the Angel series that will not occur!
Most people did not expect the A's to be in contention at this point in the season, but the fact is they are and still will remain in the hunt as long as Geren and his partners on the pines wake up and realize that they are and go for it!
Geren's positive attitude and managing style so far have been fairly strong, but he is losing points with some of his recent moves both in game and in setting the lineups. So the question is, will he and the coaching staff make the right moves this next week in these pivotal games??
And what's the deal with the Big Hurt?? Does it really take that long to recover from a muscle pull? Or is he spending too much time at the Craps table at his home in Vegas?
Also, I realize the AL squad needs another third baseman, but Joe Crede at .261 on the team?? Please!
QUESTIONS ABOUND!

Um, if anything Suzuki has been way overused this season
He’s started in something like 7 of every 8 games. That’s almost 90% and you think he should be starting even more just because there are other parts of the lineup injured/struggling/etc? Otherwise, you’re going to eventually see his name on the list of those on the DL at some point.
Come on.

Rest Suzuki, but rest him at the right times!
I agree that he needs breaks! But when to give him those breaks is the question! And Geren’s timing is not good. He needs to get a break in games that we have the other key players available! Namely, Sweeney and Gonzalez. Not to mention the Big Hurt and Chavy!

Catchers should get an off day at least every week
All of those guys have had weeks of unavailability.
You see the problem don’t you?

Day Game after Night Game, travel day, long stretch with no days off in the near future
Seems like a perfect time to rest him.

Again, Geren can't win here
Doesn’t matter what he does, he’s going to be criticized for it.
I can understand critiquing a manager for screwing up platoons or something like that, but there’s really no basis for criticizing him for resting tired players (or not resting them if they’re not tired, for that matter). He’s in an infinitely better position to know about these things than we are.

Too many injuries indeed
I agree that something is wrong in the game preparation for these young players. I just can’t believe that we’ve had this much bad luck with injuries two seasons in a row now- Beane needs to be looking at what is going on with his trainers….

issues with the training staff?
Larry Davis has been around forever, it seems. Steve Sayles appears to be the “head trainer” now. And Clarence Cockrell heads up S&C.
I also think a closer look at how the players train, prep/stretch, etc. is needed.

Especially S&C, IMO
Here’s Cust, the latest “my back hurts from working out” casualty – I can’t help but wonder if that was the difference between getting enough of that last moon shot and falling short (his moon shots rarely don’t go out). I have ALWAYS been skeptical of Cockrell’s S&C program, and the flurry of hamstring problems have hardly inspired more confidence.

Dear Bob
I don’t care if Chavy can’s move his right shoulder, or that Frank Thomas has to crawl to 1st base. I want them both in the lineup tomorrow.
PS, I also want a spare hamstring for Cargon

Satisfied With Second Place?
Looks like most of you took my words out of context! Why is it so difficult for some of you to question certain moves by Geren? Are you all related? I have not said Suzuki doesn’t need rest! Read the post carefully before commenting! I have said he should be rested when others are available to give us a better chance to win! And this day game after night game crap is rediculous! These kids are in their early twenties! But if he needs a blow ,give it to him tonight against the lame Mariners!
So stop being myopic fans and stop being satisfied with second place! BTW, the Twins aren’t leading the wild card, the Red Sox are! So check your facts before pounding the fan posts! I said… We need to scoreboard watch and pull for the Twins, Red Sox/Rays, Yankees and possibly the Rangers to LOSE! Also, thanks to “greenmachine” for throwing me a bone! You clearly want the A’s to win a championship like I do!

He’s Right
However:
Day game after night game is a normal day off for catchers of any age.
I’d rather have Suzuki take that day off and be available for what (on paper) is a much more winnable game tonight against a division team.

Fair enough. I focus on "loss column,"
and the Twins are one up on the Red Sox in that regard.

I don't know if people want 2nd place but.....
Many people have their mindset that this is a rebuilding year so they argue that everyone should just shut up and be happy with whatever wins the team can scratch out.
People who make posts that suggest that the A’s with some minor changes or small line-up moves or strategies get criticized the most because they are seen as rubes who really don’t know anything about how baseball works.
Your post is the type of post that you would see on many baseball fan sites. This site is very different, however it is not necessarily any worse overall.
For example, I used to follow the Mets somewhat but their fan posts are extreme in the other way. Anytime a guy had a mistake or had a bad night they expected him to be replaced.
You would read posts that suggested that the Mets could get Ichiro in a trade for Tom Glavine and then others will chime that it is a great deal.
On this site, I posted that the A’s should look into a waiver wire pick-up to possibly fill one of the many holes in the line-up and was attacked like I suggested that we should trade C.Gon or Suzuki..
Anyway, I do think they could have DHed Suzuki and let Bowen catch. The manager did make a good move sending him in to Pinch Hit.

The problem you ran into is you didn't have examples and when you did...
...post a list, none of them would help the team’s problems. They just had the same mediocre averages and lack of power we already have too much of.

Can we can the “you’re only a real fan/want the A’s to win if you are anti-Geren/anti-rebuilding/anti-whatever” rhetoric, please?
We’re all A’s fans. We all want the team to win. I’d be thrilled as all get out if Barton suddenly started hitting .300, Carlos Gonzalez learned how to take a walk and Joey Devine came back healthy and dominant again. Nobody is saying they want the A’s to miss the playoffs. Just that it’s not very likely that they’ll MAKE the playoffs.
Desire and probability are not the same thing. Accusing people who display insufficient homerism of being “satisfied with second place” is the baseball equivalent of red-baiting.

Resting Players... Good Topic!
nevermoor makes a good point! Pound the weaklings into submission with our full lineup and sacrifice games against better opponents becasue you probably won’t win anyway! It is a valid point, however I would think with Harden on the mound Geren would have thought he had a good chance to win! It’s a 50/50 call I guess!

The MAIN problem everyone had with this post was the fact that,1, there is noone healthy, and
2, if we wait until then to rest Zooks, he may very well be Kendall’s age.

Let’s everyone keep in mind that these guys are in their twenties and work three hours a day! Granted Catching is the toughest position, but C’mon! Something tells me Kurt would want to be out there when he is RED HOT!

Or pro sports
Or hell, even high level, or even Div 1 college level amateur sports.
The idea that an elite level pro athlete in a major, big money sport, only “works” 3 hours a day is freaking hilarious.

MLB Players Have The Life!
They drive to the park around noon, go through the pregame plan, get some stretching in, maybe lift some weights, (see Jack Cust), have a pregame meal, get some gear on and do batting practice and then finally suit up for the game! I have A LOT of respect for big league ballplayers, but to say they work more than three hours a day is a real stretch! I know this personally because I was fortunate enough to have tryouts with Milwaukee and CIncinnati and the players I spoke with shared the routines, so I got it straight from the horses mouths. I was’nt good enough to make the team, but I did get some great insight and so we need to keep what these guys do in perspective. If Bob Gibson were still playing today we might have a different take on things! These guys are awesome and they deserve their just do, but let’s keep in mind MLB Players Have The Life!
