I'm fine with that, because

1. Hard to argue with what Lee has done this year
2. Duke throws Sunday, and will be on one-day rest – which may be why Lee gets the nod.

As to the second point

This is why I shouldn’t have posted after a full day of post 4th festivities.

I think Duke is the better choice all things being equal, but one day of rest is not equal.

I don't consider it a shafting.

One has to get the nod over the other and yes, they’re pretty comparable in most ways.

I wouldn't be surprised if Francona waited

to hear who was going Sunday and then chose Lee because Duke is pitching Sunday and Lee isn’t.

wonder if Duke will even get to pitch...

in his 2nd All Star appearance? On one days’ rest? Now, that would be “getting shafted.” But, Francona knows Duke, so he’ll probably make sure he gets an appearance.

Not pitching = not selected

If Duke pitches 7-8 innings on Sunday it may be theoretically possible for him to pitch one inning on Tuesday but maybe a very poor idea. This is not the 7th game of a play-off series, it is an exhibition game. I could be wrong but I seem to remember that in the past there have been cases where, for roster juggling purposes, they have completely left off the roster a SP who pitches on the Sunday before the AS game.

not suprised about this

and Cliff Lee is having a great season too. Now, I’m a Giants hater but I think Lincecum should’ve started for the NL and I’m guessing he’s pitching that sunday too.

by VivaOakland on Jul 5, 2008 8:54 PM PDT reply actions

Also should be noted that Duke

did miss several starts. I think Lee’s a solid choice.

When I first read the title

I thought you were going to say Duke didn’t make the All-Star team at all, in which case I would surely agree he got shafted.

Now that I see he just didn’t get the start, heck, nothing wrong with that.

That's what I thought, too.

I think Lee is a worthy choice to start the game.

duke will pitch next sunday.

just like his first all star game, he will not get in and have to be satisfied with being selected.

No shafting

You can’t argue with Cliff Lee’s first half, and Duke may not be able to pitch in the All Star Game because of his Sunday start.

The biggest problem with Cliff Lee is that he’s been a solid pitcher who had a terrific first half, not a guy with several years of great pitching under his belt.

tune in today at 11am on TBS

for the chance to see your Boston Redsox and New York Yankees be named to the allstar team. I’ll be catching the A’s game on WGN and flipping back and forth.

Booze + Internet = I made a dumb one

Because of the one day rest thing.

Otherwise, if I had to pick one of the two to win a game for me it’d be Duke, and I think he’s having a better season overall. Lee was untouchable to start and has been good ever since. Duke’s just been great all season.

Now THAT'S comedy

If they had projected Donnie Murphy as well, I’d think CBS just had a lingering soft spot for “Murphy Brown”.

trade value

Well, if Brown was selected to the AS game it could increase his trade value.

The Rays Are Looking for RH Bat:

Nady, Holliday, Bay and then perhaps Emil Brown would be options…Hold on, one of these is NOT like the other…Hmmm???

Yes. an ALL-STAR with an extremely reasonable contract. Let the multi-prospect bidding begin!

I did not see duke down on the first roster

presented for the american league. But I do see Emil Brown… That is the problem when your offense sucks as bad as the A’s does. I could not vote knowing that the A’s had no offensive player to vote for… Thomas D.L.’ed before he could get going well. All others basically in and out of the lineup from the D.L…. Brown has been healthy and has not been sent to the minors. LOL

One Inning for Duke

According to the A’s broadcast, Geren was asked if Duke could pitch one inning on one day’s rest and Bob said Yes. If he throws 100+ pitches on Sunday, perhaps not, though.

by muscatel on Jul 6, 2008 2:42 PM PDT reply actions

The only thing I'm worried about

or that would make me feel like Duke got shafted is if he continues to lead the A.L. and perhaps even MLB in ERA and isn’t even in the Cy Young conversation at season’s end… a very realistic scenario considering the market he plays in and his potential W-L record because of the offense he’ll be relying upon.

by still bills kingdom on Jul 6, 2008 2:57 PM PDT reply actions

As long as he keeps the "1" in front of his ERA,

he’ll be remembered. Sadly, though, I don’t expect that to last the season.

Yeah

I feel comfortable saying Duke is a great pitcher, but not better than Pedro-at-his-peak.
