Crosby to the DL; Petit called up
Well, I'm surprised BoCro lasted this long. *sigh*
Here is the official press release.
This is the third time the A's have placed a player on the disabled list in the last four days. Oakland has now used the DL 18 times this year, which is four short of the Oakland record set in 1992 and matched last year. The A's currently have seven players on the DL.
We're close to breaking our DL record! :(
Luckily we have a lot more depth this year!

Actually, I'm conflicted
I’m happy he’s out of the lineup, but unfortunately he’s likely to be untradeable at this point, so it’s probably increasing the number of games he’ll be playing in an A’s uniform…

At the least, being injured makes it easier to give someone else a look...
...because at this point, they’re not playing Petit over Crosby if both are healthy.

wow...
Bankston, Barton, Murphy, Hannahan, Petit, Davis and Brown. I know the overwhelming choice for Manager of the Year will be the Rays’ Joe Maddon, but if Geren keeps winning with this motley lineup, he’s gotta finish second.

The year is barely half done
every team is getting a share of the “injury hammer blows”. I think Geren is succeeding because the pitching is succeeding.
Joe Maddon may have his own “NY Mets-style debacle” come September. Let’s hold off on the mgr of the year talk …. IMO.

active roster in MLB? It’s gotta be close.

Ellis is pulling down (up) the average
Now with Chavez, Corsby, and Thomas all on DL, MaEl’s the only A’s hitter on the field who’s played on the 2006 team.

Not many 1970's babies left on the active roster....
Emil Brown – ‘74
Jack Cust – ‘79
Justin Duchscherererer – ‘77
Mark Ellis – ‘77
Alan Embree – ‘70
Brad Ziegler – ‘79

this year doesn’t feel as DL-errific as last year.

While on that subject...
...I watched Jason Perry (traded to the Tigers for Hannahan) stroke a triple and drive in a run in his first major league at bat on Friday. He’s with the Braves now.

Crosby soldiered that first half
I know he ain’t stellar with the stick, but I still like the guy. I’m glad to see he held out for so long. I wouldn’t hold this against him while he’s trying to shake off the “fragile” label—could and does happen to anybody.
I hope Petit gets more of those starts than Murphy.

Same here - at least use the time to
see what Petit can do. All he did in his first callup was go 6/18.

If he rips it, whaddaya do?
Would you rather Crosby’s .250 with doubles power, or Petit’s .275 with Mr. Burns power?

Crosby's the present...
Petit the future (if they can’t find anybody better). So, Petit goes down as soon as Crosby’s healthy. Maybe Crosby spends an extra game or two rehabbing if Petit shows something beyond the expected.

or more like this
murphy’s the present, petit the future
i see petit filling that utlity role and unfortunately crosby going nowhere with that 5mill contract unless he’s injured
my hope is that crosby has built up some value and its just bad timing that dodgers are desperate for SS right now that he’s injured.
they are showing interest in an NL version of a healthy crosby…Jack Wilson who has 15+ mill/2yrs remaining

3 LH opposing starters in the next 4 days
Let Petit play SS and Murphy 3B against the left handers. Jack can play 3b against Silva and w/ Duke pitching that game, I’d but the better defensive SS out there. Which I believe is Petit.

and for my own amusement
my guess for tomm’s lineup:
Ellis 2b
Sweeney RF
Suzuki C
Brown LF
Cust DH
Banky 1B
Cgon CF
Murphy 3B
Petit SS

Banky, huh?
Chasing Amy reference, I hope.
Answering my own question above, Petit doesn’t seem to me like he’s the answer to the offensive woes at the SS position. I certainly like him more as the supersub than Murphy. Crosby probably has a lock on the starting spot, not by virtue of the contract, but by virtue of the fact that Billy looks over his organizational depth chart, sighs, and quietly mutters “shit.”

unfotunately, neither Crosby nor Murphy...
are going to be replaced by Petit this year. Petit is an emergency replacement, nothing more.

Crosby isn't the answer either
So they might as well have someone out there who can field the position well. Once Petit arrives he should be in the lineup. There’s no point in calling him up if the plan is to put him on the bench. They could have called up Pennington for that.

they'll play him, as long as playing time is available...
when it’s not, they’ll send him back down. It’s pretty simple.

It's not that simple
If Petit plays particularly well, they may not be able to send him down. He wouldn’t be the first minor leaguer to parlay an unexpected opportunity into a starting gig in the major leagues. You could be right but it’s far from a certainty.

knowing geren, i doubt petit plays
hr might get in a couple games here and there, but he’ll prefer murphy
here’s an article on pennington
Cliff Pennington, SS, Sacramento River Cats (Triple-A, A’s)
Being a first-round pick (21st overall in 2005) carries a lot of expectations. For the first part of his pro career, it’s safe to say Pennington struggled to meet them.
The Texas A&M product had a decent summer debut in the Midwest League after being drafted, but 2006 did not go so well. He missed time with a torn hamstring and he hit a combined .239 that season. Last year did go a bit better, as the shortstop hit .253 between the California and Texas Leagues. He did show excellent on-base skills, drawing 81 walks for a .346 OBP, that helped him get on base to use his speed for 17 stolen bases.
Now 23, Pennington has taken another step up in 2008. He began the year back in Midland, but got promoted to Triple-A after 50 games. Between the two levels, he’s hit .263, but he’s drawn 60 walks (against 51 K’s) for a .380 OBP and he’s gone 22-for-27 in stolen-base attempts. He’s mixed in some second base to increase his versatility and at the very worst, looks like he could be a very valuable speedy utilityman in short order.

Hi! New here. Huge A’s fan!
Anyways, I have always held on to HOPE that Bobby would play a full season and produce. I like the guy but it’s never a shock to hear he was put on the DL. When he plays he is a solid defensive player and his bat isn’t bad..it’s just not that good either! It’s just never a shock to hear that Bobby is on the DL. Must be nice to make so much money sitting on a bench watching baseball games. I wish!

Aargh
Bobby Crosby, career OPS+: 86
Bobby Crosby, career Equivalent Average: .243
Bobby Crosby, career batting runs above average: -40
Over his career, Crosby has been closer to a replacement level hitter than to league-average. I really don’t know what other word than “bad” could be used to describe him.
