Way to go Gio
Gio pitched a complete game one hitter tonight (yes, the one was a HR). 13 K/2 BB. He really seems to be doing a lot better lately, hopefully he can keep it up.
Between his and Cahill's performance tonight, Anderson and now Inoa in the wings, our pitching could be unreal for a while. As much as I loved Swisher, I'm really loving both Gio and Sweeny.

Just imagin if De Los Santos
didnt have TJ surgery. We have the best pitching prospects in all of baseball IMO. Tampa is really close but with Mcgee getting TJS I think we moved ahead of them.
When will then be now? Soon.

Starting Pitching Prospects
Trevor Cahill
Brett Anderson
Gio Gonzalez
Craig Italiano
Michel Inoa
James Simmons
Henry Rodriguez
Vince Mazzaro
Arnold Leon
Fautino De Los Santos
Thats a lot of pitching depth, I’d say. And I’d say that everyone on that list has the potential to be a #3 starter or better. If only we had hitting depth like that.

Ross, too
if they ever get his delivery cleaned up a little.

Ross is already hurt, y'know.
Maybe those mechanics ARE a problem. :-(

The beauty is that all that pitching depth can be turned into a hitter
or two or three via trade. Everyone needs more pitching.

I wonder what our top 10 prospect list would look like right now?
Top Pitchers have already been listed, + Ross.
Top Hitters:
1B Sean Doolittle
1B Chris Carter
OF Aaron Cunningham
3B Jesus Guzman
C1 Anthony Recker
OF Matt Sulentic
OF Corey Brown
2B Jamile Weeks
Thats all I can think of. Not a whole lot there. Most of our “prospects” as far as hitting goes have gotten a bit too old.
Looking at that list, if it holds true till the end of the year, I wouldn’t be supprised if next year’s top 10 list only included 1 hitter, Doolittle, and the rest pitchers.

Landon Powell should still be on there
As far as I can tell, his low OPS this year is still a coincidence. His BABIP is 50 points lower than it’s ever been before, and his secondary skills (power, walk rate, etc) haven’t really changed…
Also, Petit is still prospect-eligible, although I suppose he probably won’t be by year’s end. (OK, technically I think Carlos Gonzalez is, too, but we all know he’ll surpass it.)

I really hope Powell and stay healthy and get it together.

Yeah Powell was dealing with an injury for the better part of the first half
the good news is the injury is not a problem anymore but recovery from the injury takes about 3-4 months so look for him to have a big second half

What was the injury this time?

I cant recall at the time but he had surgy to fix it and was expected to
struggle during the first half as it healed up then be at 100% around the ASB

Don't get too excited
Gio’s ERA even after this is still 4.84… Nobody’s doubting that he has the raw stuff, but he can’t seem to string together a few good outings… until I see a long stretch of consistency, I wouldn’t rush Gio up to the majors.

ERA is meaningless for prospects
Remember when Nick Adenhart’s ERA was about 0.7 and the Angels called him up?
It turned out to be a total mirage, as he got hammered in a short MLB stint, went back down and kept getting hammered in AAA. It was predictable if you looked at his peripherals—he wasn’t striking guys out, he was walking too many people and he had been terrifically lucky not to give up any HR with all the fly balls he was surrendering.
Gio now is a better bet than Adenhart then, even though his ERA is 4 runs higher.

Gio
I wouldn’t go so far as to say ERA is meaningless but it can certainly be deceptive. Otherwise, I agree. If a spot in the rotation were to be opened by trade or injury, I’d like to see him get a shot.

Gio strikes me as a guy you DON'T call up early
Great arm, but not harnessing it consistently = Not ready for prime time yet.

Just look at his game log...
For every game or two like Friday, he has a game where he can’t make it past the 3rd/4th inning. His K/BB ratio is currently 103/48, which isn’t terrible, but could be a lot better, even in the PCL. While I agree with your point that ratios are somewhat deceptive for prospects because they’re often told to work on the weaker pitches in their repertoire, I think Gio’s still pretty raw and in general madly inconsistent. I think he’s worth a September callup to get a taste of the bigs, but I think it’s best for his future and the teams if he starts next year at Sacramento… or maybe even at Double A until he shows that he can dominate on a consistent basis.
WIth pitchers, it’s almost never the case that teams leave them down for TOO long… pitchers get rushed a lot… this isn’t like Utley and Howard being kept down without anything to prove in the minors.
