Open Thread: Trade Deadline (1:00 PM PST Thursday)
Trade deadline approaching, and we've already seen some deals go down-just not A's ones.
The Astros, in Ed Wade's genius, acquried LaTroy Hawkins from the Yankees.
The Angels FINALLY made a trade, perhaps their first trade in like 15 years, and acquired Mark Teixiera for Kasey Cotchman and a minor league reliever. The only bright side of the deal for A's fans is that as with any trade with the Braves, Mark Teixiera will be found dead in his bathroom in approximately 5 weeks.
And the RedSox are apparently about to deal Manny Ramirez to the Marlins for 3 of their top prospects (paying all of Manny's salary), while possibly having a three way deal in the works with the Bucs to acquire Jason Bay.
We still have Duke, who's scheduled to pitch Friday. We still have Street, who blew a game today (why did Geren leave him in to pitch a 2nd inning?) an we still have Mark Ellis, Bobby Crosby and Alan Embree.

interesting that the Yankees traded away two relievers
I didn’t think that was an area of strength for them
They will promote from within.

Wasn't Hawkins designated for assignment a few days ago?
I think the “trade” was just a formality for them.

Casey Kotchman
But I kinda like it the Zonis way.
Also, Pudge to the Yankees for Farnsworth.
I really can’t even imagine that nobody wants Embree. At this point, every pitch he throws takes away from some younger player, and that makes him worthless for this team. Not getting rid of him is a sign that they’re going to pick up his 2009 option, and that thought sorta makes me throw up.

I don't think the Yankees would take Embree, even for free.
They’re intimately familiar with his stylings.

nice timimg, they are getting beatdown by cubs and are back in market for relievers
who do they have
that we want? didn’t they trade a few of their best pieces for cc?

They have a 3B (more likely 1B or OF) named Gamel who s a great hitting prospect, but his #'s have declined every month this year
and a really good SS Prospect that is supposed to be untouchable as well.
facepalm.jpg
But the two guys we want most are untouchable.
And the question is if they want Duke or Street (or hell, both!).
facepalm.jpg
Red rover send Luis Pena right over
Thats about all that would really help the A’s at AAA from the brew crew
When a AAA prospect from a team that I've looked at
makes me go “who?”, that’s probably not a good sign.
Try their AA roster.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Scouts at AAA
so it doesnt make sense to talk about the AA roster where the best Brewers prospects are.
Luis Pena is the closer with decent stuff(although a high walk rate) and if we are sending Embree over to them I wouldn’t expect a top prospect in return.
I could actually see us going for Brad Nelson
25 year old 1B with a decent enough line at AAA-a stopgap till Barton remembers how to hit?
facepalm.jpg
I was under the (wrong) impression somehow
that he had already been traded.
In any event, the A’s really don’t need more AAAA players getting in the way of the actual guys with upside. Particularly not at first base.

Street deal?
Olney right now on ESPNews says that the White Sox and A’s are talking about Street with the Sox offering Orlando Cabrera. Mentioned the Dodgers in need of a shortstop.
Why would we want a soon to be FA in Cabrera?

So much better as to justify expending the team’s best (sorry, Duke) trade chip to fill the gap?

I'd do that trade.
Kemp is younger, appears to be better defensively, and has more power.
Oh, and Buck apparently forgot how to hit this year.
Kemp
Is also a righty which we are sorely lacking.

I can't shake the feeling
that Matt Kemp has been spectacularly lucky to hit as well as he has so far in his career, and that he is riding for a massive (one might say Buck-esque) fall.
His career BABIP is over .390! No way that lasts. I could see .330 but subtract that out of his batting totals from this year and he’s damn near a replacement level hitter at corner outfield.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Frankly, I'd rather focus on Laroche/DeJesus anyway
Just saying that I’d deal for Kemp if that was the option as well.
How is DeJesus better than Petit?

I'm no expert on these new-fangled stats...
but, wouldn’t a career .330 BABIP make him damn near an elite hitter? I mean, Albert Pujols has a lower career BABIP.

I look at BABIP a little different than a lot of people
BABIP – Batting Average on Balls In Play. Basically, I look at it like “is this guy getting a lot of fluke hits or getting robbed”
“Normal” is around .290-.300 if I remember. Above that generally means that he’s getting lucky fairly often… balls find their way through holes, etc. Below means he’s getting robbed a lot, or hitting balls right at people, or just really sucks. Also, you can usually make a fairly safe assumption that any given hitter’s BABIP will eventually regress back to around that “normal” number (or go up to it, in the case of guys with low BABIP)
I think players CAN influence their BABIP, mostly by spraying line drives all over the field, but not like Kemp’s would suggest.
but, you do have to concede..
do you not (maybe you don’t), that the elite hitters in baseball consistently have career BABIP’s well above the .290-.300 level. They’re not lucky… they’re good.
Maybe Kemp is one of those. Not .390 good… but, good, nevertheless.

Sure, but only to a point.
ARod = .327 career BABIP
Pujols = .322
Freakishly high guys: Jeter (.359), Ichiro! (.355), Manny (.342)
so, Kemp's .390 campares favorably..
to the best hitters in baseball. Not favorably, really, but he tops them all by a ton. Fuck it… I’d say it’s worth the risk he might regress to .330 lifetime, if we can pry him loose. LOL

um...
I know we’re just speculating here, but this deal isn’t even lose to realistic. No way L.A. would give up Kemp for Cabrera and Buck. Cabrera would just be a rental unless they can ink him long term… and if you wanna talk about guys who will be F.A.’s, I’ve heard things like Kemp straight up for the likes of Manny. He’s has a ton of raw power, and a ton of speed. He’s also said he learned a lot about basestealing from Pierre/Furcal this year, and his added skill in this area could push him to be a 30/50 guy. None of our hitting prospects are really even on the same level as Kemp. Not even our beloved C-Gon. Always fun to dream though I guess.
That would require the Dodgers to add about $4 million in salary.
Which they don’t want to do.
Though I’d be happy to see the A’s part with $4m if it meant LaRoche. If Devine was worth $5m…
If we're giving up $4 mil too we're gonna need another prospect from LA.

If not, they would certainly be the ones to give up the prospect—because landing Street for only the cost of half a season of Cabrera would be ridiculous.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Or the White Sox could cover the cost.
As they’d be saving around $3m by taking Street and dumping Cabrera. Send that $3m to LA, and it’s just about salary neutral, with the Dodgers out around $1m, and the A’s saving $1m.
Anyone the Dodgers have thats crappy + getting paid roughly $4M?
Not exactly… but there is someone making double that and always rides the bench… Juan ‘330 OBP’ Pierre @ $8M and have the Dodgers pay most of the his salary after this yr. Heck, BB could even swindle 2 top prospects from the LAD with this deal. (LaRoche + SS or Kemp)

According to a source outside the organization, Williams was talking to a handful of teams Wednesday afternoon in hopes of acquiring a back-end reliever in a three-way deal. Indications as of late Wednesday were that his target was Oakland Athletics right-hander Huston Street.
Street, the A’s closer, would move into the Sox’ setup role while veteran Scott Linebrink works his way back from the 15-day disabled list.
But one-on-one talks with the A’s apparently broke down over a lack of depth in the Sox’ farm system. No one knows that system like A’s GM Billy Beane, who traded Nick Swisher to the Sox in January for three prospects. That’s why Williams was trying to get at least one other team involved - and possibly a fourth - to try to meet Beane’s prospect demands for Street.
Unless there’s a change of heart this morning, Williams might walk away empty-handed for the stretch run.

Jason Bay
According to Ken Rosenthal the best formal offer the Pirates have received was from the Braves. It included AAA OF Brandon Jones, AAA SS Brent Lillibridge and two pitchers in the low minors.
Now, you can click on the links for Jones and Lillibridge or for the sake of expediency you can trust me when I say they’ve been struggling.
(Sigh)
I’ll wait for you to finish the links.
Anyways, that’s a package the A’s should be able to better.
I’d start with Ryan Sweeney, Cliff Pennington, Vincent Mazzaro and a 4th player TBD. The quality of the mystery 4th would be in large part determined by how much the Pirates like the first 3 on the list.
Why do this?
Well, 2008 is shot but Bay would anchor the 2009 line-up and no one can deny that the A’s could use a dependable bat next year. Losing Sweeney for Bay is a gain for Oakland, and neither Pennington or Mazzaro are instrumental in the future for the A’s.
Also, make this deal and keep Duke. Have Duke anchor the rotation as Bay stabilizes the line-up and if you really, really like ‘em you can talk extension. Or you’ve got a good shot at seeing both become Type A FA’s so you can let them go after 2009, which is when the next wave of talent should be good and ready for Oakland.
The monster at the end of this blog.
The Florida package is much, much, much better
Jeremy Hermida plus.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Plus what is the question
Sure, Hermida over Sweeney but the prospects that are supposed to be involved could be the hang-up. Now if Boston is willing to include Lowrie and the prospect coming over from Florida is a “B” then that package would be superior.
But look at the Tex deal. Kotchman and Hermida are a push performance wise, both have sketchy health records and both are arby eligible next year. Maerk is a AA bullpen arm.
Manny is not going to fetch any more then Tex did. So the chance of the prospect coming from Boston being a “B” guy is slim. That means the Red Sox would have to part with one of their top prospects to land Bay vs. my proposal. Could they do it? Sure. Will they?
The monster at the end of this blog.
ummm... my guess would be that they would...
cuz they’re on a fuckin’ 21st centruy roll in winning World Series. They want to stick it to Manny and the Yanks this season.
We’re not so much on a 21st century World Series roll…

Swoon over someone else
You wouldn’t trade Sweeney for Jason Bay?
I don’t even want to know why.
The monster at the end of this blog.
Well, there are arguments to be made for sure
Sweeney is superior defensively. Sweeney is 7 years younger, cost-controlled and contract-controlled. Sweeney is putting up his in the AL; Bay is doing his thing in the NL.
All things considered, I’m not sure Bay is significantly more valuable, especially to a team in the A’s position. He’s certainly not worth Sweeney and 3 very good prospects.
by thejd44 on Jul 31, 2008 7:44 AM PDT up reply actions
How about this...
Bay is a far better hitter and the A’s have the 2nd worst offense in the AL.
Defense is nice, but it’s a secondary issue in a Corner OF spot. The A’s need someone who can hit the ball, get on base and hit for power. Sweeney’s OBP is tied almost entirely to his batting average and when that drops (which it will) he’ll quickly become a low-OBP, middling power corner OFer. Oh joy.
Ryan Sweeney does not keep Bay from coming to Oakland.
The monster at the end of this blog.
A lot of silly and/or unsupported statements here
1) Bay is a far better hitter, for now, when the A’s aren’t ready to contend. Oh, and next year, when they might not be ready either. Then Bay is a high-priced free agent the A’s won’t keep (and probably shouldn’t because he’ll be on the wrong side of 30).
2) Defense is undervalued. Ken Griffey, who is a decent offensive player still, is so bad defensively he’s actually replacement-level or below. I bring that up because you’re acting as if corner OF defense is completely irrelevant. Great defense makes good pitchers a lot better, and it makes up for a lacking offense. An outfield of Cust, Gonzalez, and Bay would be pretty awful.
3) Sweeney is showing improved plate discipline and walk rate.
4) What makes you so absolutely sure his batting average is going to drop? And why don’t you think that any luck involved in his current average will be more than offset by a 23-year-old improving and living up to his potential?
I didn’t say Sweeney is preferred over Bay anyway. I just said there are arguments for why this A’s team shouldn’t do a deal where it’s Sweeney and a few prospects for the guy.
by thejd44 on Jul 31, 2008 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions
Pretty much agreed.
I don’t know if he can sustain a .346 BABIP, but his 23.3% line drive rate is very good.
I think there’s no doubt that Sweeney, as an everyday player, gives a team more value over the length of his contract. 2009 Bay can’t equal all those cost controlled seasons.
Contention in 2009, even if the A’s were to add Bay, means extending Ellis and Duke, as well as finding a third baseman of the future (probably by trading Street). That’s definitely a possibility, though a tall order, and I’d like the A’s to do something like that.
Why?
Because I think there’s a good chance, unlike the A’s (I think), that Ryan Sweeney is a 4th OF with the future A’s. I wonder if he’s enough of an improvement over the weakest of Buck/Cunningham/Patrol Craft to make it worthwhile in the future to keep over a sure upgrade like Bay.
Granted, I’d rather trade Buck + a pitching prospect not named Cahill or Anderson instead of Sweeney.
The 2009 A's draft pick... getting higher every game.
I agree, no reason to go for Bay
The A’s can finish third this year with or without him. And by the time the prospects are ready he’s too expensive and gone. They shouldn’t be making any trades for established players/stars right now – they should be dumping everybody who has any value and planning ahead for the future. Attendance can’t get much worse and the TV contract is worthless anyway.
You only make that deal to extend him beyond 2009

He’ll be 31 by the end of 2009. I’m not big on giving 32 year old OFs big extensions in the post-PED world.

rockies and duke
Right-handed pitcher Josh Fogg of Cincinnati may be the addition the Rockies settle for in their search for an addition to the rotation. They have continued to look into other alternatives, but when they made inquiries for higher-profile starting pitchers they have been left cold by what other teams want, including Oakland asking for a package that “starts with” center fielder Dexter Fowler and third baseman Ian Stewart for right-hander Justin Duscherer; Seattle wanting Fowler and right-handed reliever Casey Weathers for lefty Jarrod Washburn and declining to pick up any of the salary that includes $10.35 million for next year, and Washington putting a price tag of outfielder Brad Hawpe for right-handed starter Tim Redding.

Hawkins, who was designated for assignment by the Yankees earlier in the week, will report to the Astros on Friday for the first game of the three-game series against the New York Mets. Although Hawkins isn’t having a stellar season, the Astros hope he can turn his year around and help add depth to bridge the gap between the starters and closer Jose Valverde. The Yankees will pick up a “significant portion” of Hawkins’ remaining salary.
the team we need to call is
the tigers. if they’re going to give up pudge for KYLE FARNSWORTH, billy beane should be able to get a bat out of them for one of our ballboys and some ken griffey junior rookie cards
Pudge really kinda sucks now
Even if he is having an ok year at the plate. I think that’s a fairly even trade, and it really helps the Tigers who have a decimated bullpen and a better player (Inge) who can catch full time.
by thejd44 on Jul 31, 2008 8:23 AM PDT up reply actions
Dismal trade for the Tigers
Not only did they just trade Pudge for a reliever, they effectively traded away a draft pick on top of it. Pudge is going to be a Type A, Farnsworth MAY be a Type B.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Tigers were not going to offer Pudge arbitration
so they did not really lose any draft picks. I doubt that NY would offer Pudge arbitration either, as he is very, very likely to accept since he would make at least close to his current salary.
Still not saying this is a great trade, but the picks are not really part of the equasion.
You've got to be kidding me
No way he makes more in arbitration than on the market.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
I can't think of a team that would pay him 10M
He has to be offered a minimum of 80% of last years contract if the offer him arbitration. Last years contract was over 12M.
Who would pay him that much going into his age 37 season as a catcher?
nobody's going to sign Pudge if it costs them a first round pick
those are gold now
Here is what I'm hoping for now that Griffey is in Chicago
Chicago trades Cabrera to Dodgers, Dodgers trade LaRoche to A’s, Chicago trades Swisher to A’s, A’s trade Street to Chicago. Win/Win/Win scenario as I posted in the Griffey fanpost
"Mount it? I already did. Oh! You meant on the wall?!!

But getting Swisher and LaRoche for Street? I feel like the A’s would have to give up more.

Well
It’s not that crazy. In addition to sucking, Cabrera is really unpopular here and the Sox have been looking to move him for a couple months now. With the emergence of Alexi Ramirez, they have options. Although by trading Richar that does hurt their IF depth. I’d be ok with tossing in Eric Patterson to the White Sox in this silly, but fun to think about scenario.
by thejd44 on Jul 31, 2008 8:42 AM PDT up reply actions
Adding Ellis
would be a necessity for Cabrera, so they could move Ramirez over to SS. I mistakenly dropped a post down below speculating about a possible combo of: Street, Ellis and a mid-level prospect or two for Swisher and Cabrera (who then would be spun for LaRoche). Pipe-dream most likely, but like you said, fun to think about.

With Linebrink on the DL and Masset going to the Reds, the White Sox definitely could use a reliever at this point. I know Swisher for Street is a pipe dream, but I’m hoping for it. Come on, let’s make this happen.

It might be a bit counterintuitive
But I think Swisher would improve to at least his career norms if he returned to Oakland. I know he should be pounding the ball in The Cell, and McAfee is a big-time pitcher’s park, but he just doesn’t look all that comfortable there. Perhaps returning to more familiar surroundings could help him.

6:26 p.m.: All quiet with A’s, Mets
Two teams that were not terribly active as of 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday night: The A’s and Mets. The A’s were getting practically no action on reliever Huston Street, and the Mets were refusing to include any of their top prospects in a deal for the Mariners’ Raul Ibanez or any available reliever.
The Mets’ strategy for the moment, sources say, is to upgrade in any area that could make the team better, but only if the price is right. Thus, they could move on a starter, reliever, hitter or utility player, but are not focused on one particular area of need.

What about...
...a deal involving Street and Ellis to the ChiSox for Swisher and Cabrera (presumably the A’s would have to add an additional mid-level prospect or two to balance overall value)? Cabrera would then be spun as part of a LaRoche deal with the Dodgers. Kenny Williams has a surplus of OFs now and as everyone’s hoping, that may make Swish available – assuming Jr can play CF still. The ChiSox are also dying to ditch Cabrera and move Ramirez to SS and Ellis would let them do that.
I know the combo’s doubtful, given that they paid up dearly for Swish in December and they’d be getting a rental (albeit a great ballplayer) in Ellis, but it’s nice to dream!

Something has to be happening, right?
The Harden trade just doesn’t make sense (regardless of your feelings on the future of Gallagher) if there’s no further move…What’s the point of Murton and Patterson? Why throw in Gaudin? Why is Emil Brown still here? I feel like we’ve been watching a show with a ton of great plot threads ready to tie together any second…but unfortunately it’s not looking likely.
There was a further move
They traded Blanton.

hehe, I feel ya
But, you are setting yourself up for heartbreak thinking that way. I’ve finally learned not to expect something from A’s management. Remember, there is still an off-season hot stove.
OK, calmness aside, wtf is Embree doing still on our roster? Sigh.

Does anyone know more about SS Dusty Coleman?
per ESPN: Coleman set to sign with Athletics
Sounds like a good athlete. He was all-state in football, basketball and baseball in high school. He is supposedly going to receive a $700,000 signing bonus.
Supposedly he was drafted in the 28th round as a sophomore
http://www.kansas.com/sports/story/477344.html
A strong summer in the Cape Cod League enticed the A’s to offer him a $700,000 bonus, comparable to what some second-rounders receive. WSU pitcher Aaron Shafer, a second-round pick by the Cubs, earned a $625,000 bonus. Coleman set his price at $700,000 and said once Oakland met it, he couldn’t turn the money down.
Ok, since we're all here and looking for something to talk about/kick around
(This is purely hypothetical and NOT a rumor):
Would you do this trade?
-The A’s take on Barry Zito’s entire remaining contract and get Bumgarner, Villalona, Alderson and Henry Sosa or Schierholtz in exchange for some low-A no-name prospect from the A’s.
Basically, we buy the Giants ~100MM of salary relief for the very best of their entire farm system – the top 4 or 5 guys.
For the A’s, Zito would essentially become a glorified long reliever, with maybe a sub-5% chance of him reclaiming what he had in his mid-20s and being effective enough to return to the rotation. With all our young starters, there would be plenty of days where four low-leverage innings from Zito in the ‘pen would at least finish a game for us. I think he needs to pitch in a completely pressure-free environment for a while, anyway.
The Giants benefit from freeing themselves of the worst contract in baseball, and the A’s have the payroll room to absorb it. Obviously getting four or five very good prospects is what benefits the A’s.
Would you do it as the Giants’ GM? As the A’s? I’m guessing most of us wouldn’t absorb all ~100MM. So, how much would you take on, to get those 4-5 Giants’ prospects?

that's a fascinating hypothetical
I’d probably align myself with WaddellCanseco’s take, including the parenthetic.
That said, I don’t see the benefit for the Giants. Yes, they’d free up cash, but unless the post-Magowan ownership is utterly panicked about attendance decline and debt service … and even then, it’s a bad idea, because it mortgages a lot of their medium-to-long-term competitiveness and the only way for them to remain competitive (both on-field and for attendance) would be to turn around and spend nearly all of the cash windfall on expensive FAs.

Aren't young prospects like the ones mentioned generally more valuable than $5MM?
I know there’s work done on this. It wouldn’t be hard to figure out ZIto’s actual value compared to his contract while also figuring in what the others will be worth for the next 6-8 years.
Plus, this hypothetical wouldn’t preclude the A’s from eventually trading Zito down the road.
I think I’d probably make the deal.

After thinking about it, I say yes. I would swallow about 75M.
Of course I’d haggle to try and take on less than all ~75M, but it would not deter me if all 5 top prospects were included. If it was 4 top prospects, I’d take on about 60M. I guess around 15M a prospect if I liked all of them. Of course scouting would play as big role, as there are some pretty raw guys in their top 5.
I can’t imagine it would pass through league paper work though.
It’s almost crazy enough to work, but it’s so risky for both sides… almost like trading bullets to the face.

Kevin Goldstein (11:15:07 AM PT): John (Daly City): Has there been any interest in Duscherer?
Nothing close to what Oakland had hoped for. I just don’t think people really believe in his season.
John Perrotto (11:17:05 AM PT): Athletics are done dealing. They didn’t get they wanted for Duchscherer or Street.
This means that Duke's trade value will likely be higher in the offseason if he finishes strong
And Street will probably have more trade value next July.

agree on both
As much as I’d love to see full-scale rebuilding right now, we’ll get more for him when people believe in him (i.e. next year even) and Street is at his lowest value ever right now. They’re not making much and they’re both good (Street’s latest stumbles notwithstanding) so they might as well hold on until peak value. It’s boring but it’s smart.

No more deals for the A's.
Now it is time to see if the A’s can win 70 games. With mainly road games the rest of the year, plus inter-division games that we lose more often than win, AUG & SEP look brutal. Time to bring the youngsters up so they can get some time in the BIG HOUSE and dump some dead weight (E.Brown & Embree to start).
I am looking forward to seeing some new faces (callups) in OAK. That is the only positive left for the season. PEACE, OUT.

Come on, that’s 18 wins in 2 months (and, I think, 57 games). Even this group is not nearly that bad.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
your call.... it will not be more than 75.
And if it is, I will be seriously happy. Don’t get me wrong, I see many positives for the future. But this season has taken a quick nose dive and the team seems to be dragging ever since the loss to LAA before the break. (The earlier trades did not help their mindset either.)
It is a learning experience for the entire team and coaching staff with so many rooks. I personally feel this team, lacking experience though talented, needs some fire, attitude. Right now, they are pretty bland.

Would ya’ll trade for LaRoche just for to have some change in our anemic lineup…even if it means letting go some valuable arms (HROD/Simmons/etc.)? Because some of the apathy seems almost irrational….5 bucks says that after nothing happens today, everyone will start posting how pathetic Beane is and why he didnt acquire Laroche/Holiday/etc for our uber talents of Ellis/Street/Embree/etc.

by VORP is too nerdy on Jul 31, 2008 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions
I would trade HRod in two seconds
for a quality hitting prospect. He throws hard – hooray. And he has huge perceived value right now due to one inning in the futures game. I’ve seen WAY too many hard throwers turn into nothing. As long as a guy can throw over 90 that’s good enough.
Would you trade
HROD+Simmons+Anderson to get it done? Basically, would you want be willing to give up more than what everyone else thinks (LaRoche/Dunn/Insert PTBNL here) is worth just for the sake of it?
"Twenty minutes," says Jack Sr. "Thank god for Billy Beane."
just for the sake of it?
Never. If it’s worth it? Of course. I don’t know who I would trade – prospect trades seem to always exist with their own sphere and have much more to do with what organizations already have/need. I have no idea what I’d give for LaRoche, mostly because I don’t know what I think he’s worth. I think HRod likely turns into a reliever with good years and bad years, and I think Simmons becomes an average-ish starting pitcher, maybe a tick above. Is that worth LaRoche?
You didn't answer the question...
If you know what you are giving up is worth more than what you are getting in return, but you need that thing in return (in this case a big right handed power bat), would you do it just for the sake of it? Or would you only trade for fair market value in return….
The reason is ask is because people seem to be clamoring for change, especially in regards to a right handed power bat in our lineup…but thats going to cost a lot and sorry but Ellis+Street+Embree+DFA just wont do it. As much as I would like to see a Ryan Braun or so here, it just wont happen unless you know you;re getting ripped in the process.
"Twenty minutes," says Jack Sr. "Thank god for Billy Beane."
ah what you want is a hypothetical
then – no. Unless it’s the trading deadline in 2012 and the A’s need a big bat/arm/whatever to push for the World Series. But we’re hardly at that point. A lot of things are going to change between now and 2012 – at this point we don’t “need” anything because we’re not going to compete – we need to be getting as many assets as possible, some of which haven’t emerged yet. Should the A’s overpay today for LaRoche? No. Because who knows who’s going to show up/become available in 09,10,11, etc. around the times at which the A’s are hoping to really compete again. If we could get LaRoche for fair value, then yes, absolutely.
FWIW..
I think your thought process is akin to BB now…hence no deals, regardless if we have AAAA scrubs in our daily lineup.
"Twenty minutes," says Jack Sr. "Thank god for Billy Beane."
and I agree with him
Why overpay and sacrifice the future so we can win finish 6 games out instead of 10? We’re not going to win the division, we’re not going to win the Wild Card, and even if by chance we did sneak into the playoffs, there are 7 better teams in it than us. But hey, hoping that at some point we do get into the position where we need that one more piece to really go somewhere, do it! Overpay – bring in Evan Longoria or whoever it is in 2012 or 13 to be that final piece.
We should never trade H-Rod except for a premium return.
Hard throwers turn into nothing is true, but how many guys throw 95-100 mph with movement and a real breaking pitch, and are durable enough to consistently go 5-7 IP with high pitch counts per inning?
If someone can name 10 guys like that who eventually turned into nothing, I’ll be impressed.

Or became middling relievers. Jesus Colome springs to mind from the A’s recent past. People went nuts when he was traded for Mecir. Reports on HRod’s slider are very very mixed (I’ve heard everything from great to bad), and either way he’ll need a changeup too if he’s going to stay a starter. And we have no idea about his durability – he’s 21. I’m not saying I’d give him away – I’m just saying given the flameout rate for “stuff” pitchers, if HRod could net a quality hitting prospect in return I’d do it. And I would for Simmons too.

The Red Sox are willing to pay Manny's salary
so let’s get Manny for the rest of the year. Maybe he’ll boost attendance and bring in some cash for next year. We should also get a compensation pick for him when goes FA.
Birds of a feather flock together....and crap on your car!
"Willing to pay his salary"
does not mean “willing to pay his salary and give him away for doodly squat.”
They want a good-hitting outfielder in return. On the A’s, that basically means Carlos Gonzalez plus more prospects.
Not a chance.

A’s seem to be done.
Pirates have closed up their war room, meaning no comment until four. Rays also not confirming anything.
What's that???
He’s not striking out two hitters per inning? He must not have his A-stuff today.
Given his last 3 starts, you know who would have fetched a lot today? Rich Harden. Then again, I’m in the camp that’s happy with the trade.
When is Harden not dealing?
His numbers with the Cubs are fucking ridiculous. He never gives up hits or runs, walks hardly anybody, and strikes everyone else out. It’s likely his best stretch in the majors, and that’s saying a lot.
There was never any doubt about his talent, EVERYONE can see that, the
question was how long could he continue to do it.

Don't know what this has to do with my post
I was just pointing out that his performance with the Cubs has been freakishly good.
Nice to have some company, RLangford
As you know, though, on AN you aren’t allowed to criticize the Harden trade because it was a foregone conclusion that he would get hurt before the trade deadline, which means that Billy was right to trade him when he did and for the curious hand full of beans that he got. The fact that he hasn’t gotten hurt prior to the trade deadline and would today fetch far more than what the A’s got for him two stiffs already up and down to AAA, plus a highly uncertain prospect in Gallagher is similarly forbidden conversation.
As Oscar Wilde once quipped, only shallow people fail to judge by appearance. And the appearance at the time was that if Billy had waited a week or two he would have been able to trade Rich Harden to somebody willing to give up somebody who could actually hit. Harden may well get hurt prior to the end of the year, but they must be laughing like crazy in Chicago right now. What’s he got, 38 Ks and 2 earned runs in 4 starts?
i never got the freak out about his arm issues prior to the trade
dude hadn’t pitched much at all for several years. was it really shocking to see him have a dead arm period? i guess the real question is, did the a’s medical staff see anything different, or did beane panic and trade him too soon? i think it’s definitely the latter, but that’s based on what we’ve heard about the dead arm issue. if the a’s staff thought it could be a sign of something worse coming on, totally different story. still pissed about that trade – gallagher is a nice piece, but thought we should have gotten one more good one.

Why did anybody here think anyone would want Street?
None of you want him and you all see him more than anybody. Even his defenders here always sound as if they are trying to convince some GM who happens to be reading the blog—or at the least trying to convince themselves.
Wrong.
People want him traded because he’s a valuable chip. He’s young, still signed through next year, and a good pitcher.
The team has a ton of bullpen depth, and Street makes the most sense to deal.
Keep telling yourself that—it's exactly my point
But you’re wrong about the good pitcher part. For what he does—close—he’s not particulary good right now, and hasn’t really been all season. And he wasn’t all that good last year except for a stretch or two.
So please stop pretending he’s better than he is.
then why are would we want to deal him?

They’re all signed longer than Street.
So you're hedging your bet

- Jekyll and Hyde Casillas
- Injured and unproven Devine
- Small sample size Ziegler
that they can take his place for the next 3-5 years?
As much as I enjoy the early months performances of Casillas and Devine and rooting for Ziegler now….i vividly remember the old days of Arthur Rhodes, Jim Mercir, and company…...shudder.
"Twenty minutes," says Jack Sr. "Thank god for Billy Beane."
btw - dont get me wrong
...i endorse trading street as well…but dont’ think he’s that good. I dont think ziegler, devine, and casillas are cut out yet for closer role….my hope is on HROD developing into one (crosses fingers).
"Twenty minutes," says Jack Sr. "Thank god for Billy Beane."
Well, first off, closer is not one of the most important positions.
Second, do you really think that Street is going to be given a long term extension for big money by Oakland?
If the answer is no, it makes a lot more sense to trade him if you think you can get more value than 2 draft picks for him.

Where is the obligatory column on mlb.com, where Billy says, we made all our trades
early, and knew we were done, blah blah blah
For whatever it's worth, another solid start last night for Dan Meyer:
6.2 IP, 6 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7K (102 pitches, 67 strikes). And Barton went 0 for 3, dropping his AAA average to .185.

if it’s reliable, I don’t know that his control is good enough for MLB play. good enough to dominate, AAA, but then, the A’s have plenty of AAAA players.

It's right on his MILB.com page...
So, to fill in the blanks
5 GS
34.1 IP
27 H
8 ER

26 K
So you were actually remarkably close except on the strikeouts… unfortunately, those are kind of important. Still, worth throwing him out there and seeing what happens.
I would have no problems moving to a 6-man at this point. Every pitcher on the team right now is either young or has injury problems or both.

Smith is probably OK
He’s thrown 180 before. As long as the A’s aren’t totally ridiculous about it and stop him by about 200, he should be fine. He’s not really a “max effort” guy anyway.
Eveland’s prior career high is about 140, and he’s already shown substantial signs of fatigue vis a vis earlier in the season (more walks, more homers, fewer strikeouts). He should be shut down pretty soon. In fact, I might just move him to the pen immediately and call up Meyer to take his rotation spot. 2 months of bullpen work will take him to about 150 IP.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Does anyone think Billy will wait and offer Duke a 3 year contract
I am thinking that he will wait and see if his ERA ends up about 2.80 or even 3.00
I am hoping his ERA doesn’t go up to 3 but it’s realistic to think at least 2.70 given the innings he has thrown. I know his innings are easier and less pitchers per than many others.
Thoughts?
Obviously, I think he would not talk contract until off season.
I hate unproductive outs and the A's are producing them at record production
I think he'll talk extension to Duke
His answer to Duke’s public desire for one was consistent with it: “Let’s see how the rest of the season goes…but yes we’d be open to exploring it.” In other words, the A’s like him and believe in him and don’t intend to negotiate with him at his absolute peak statistically.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

7.0 IP 5 H 0 ER 2 BB 8 K
8.0 IP 5 H 2 ER 3 BB 2 K
6.2 IP 6 H 2 ER 1 BB 7 K
Total
34.1 IP 27 H 8 ER 6 BB 26K 2.09 ERA 0.96 WHIP
And for the totals a little mental math (so it could be wrong).
