Geren's decisions
There were two managerial decisions (or lack thereof) on Wed, that blew me away and cry out for explanations.
In the 6th inning, with the A's up 3-2, , 2 outs and an Angel on 2nd, lefty Eveland was replaced by righty Foulke to face lefty Kotchman, who doubled in the tying run.
Why was this done?
In the 7th, with the A's down by a run, Bowen reached first on FC and 3rd on passed ball. He was thrown out at plate on another FC.
Why wasn't there a pinch runner?
I was disappointed not to see either of these situations mentioned in the paper today.
Since I cannot tolerate Korach's disrespect of the fans and the game, I was listening to the Angels' broadcasters over mlb.com.
In both of the above instances, those announcers expressed shock (before the outcomes) at Geren's choices.
Can anyone explain Geren's reasoning? And please don't use the tired explanation of the A's carrying only two catchers.
It's time to start winning TODAY and not plan for tomoorows.

Repeat after me. THE MANAGER IS ONLY AS BAD AS THE PLAYERS
HE PICKS TO PERFORM THE TASKS!!!!!
The A’s don’t have the players to perform much better than they are now.

However, the manager's job is to put his players in the best position to succeed
And while I don’t agree with every single gripe, I do believe that Geren often puts guys in a position where they’re more likely to fail and there’s not really a logical explanation for it.

Terrible Answer
What are you talking about? These are two managerial decisions that were very un-managerial.
We DO have the players to protect a 3-2 lead. Why do you bring in one of your worst set-up men in such a tight game… these are valid complaints about Geren.

In the 6th inning, you generally
go with “one of your worst pitchers” because you can’t pitch your best guys in the 9th, the 8th, the 7th, and the 6th every day. Look around the league and see who gets the call in the 6th inning of a one-run game when the starter can’t take you into the 7th.

What the heck is with all these random complaint fanposts?
OK. There are now 9 fanposts that have appeared in the previous 24 hours. Those posts have a combined—combined!—total of 96 comments, or barely over 10 per post.
This sort of thing can go in the postgame thread. It suppresses active discussion when fanposts are routinely knocked off the front page after a day or so. I don’t mean to sound like a crank here, but it seems to me that the avalanche of new, small and basically unneeded fanposts, and the fact that AN has basically been a wasteland for discussion today, are not unrelated.

Although this fanpost, is ridiculous and unneeded, I think the holiday has more to do with the
AN Wasteland for the day. There isn’t even a DLD. So PT, you need to go make one.

DLDs suck
they should not get more recs than posts that are 100% about the team
"It's not my fault your team's so shitty." -Steve Friend, head coach, Chabot College, to Laney College's head coach, who asked why we scored so many runs after we beat Laney 30-3 in 2006

How does Korach disrespect the fans and the game?
I’ve always thought he is as professional as any announcer in the business and calls a good game. I’ve never even hear of anyone complain about him. Seems a little out of the blue to me..

If you can't or won't explain how Korach disrespects the fans and the game...
...then don’t come around here dropping an accusation like that.

This sounds like an Angels' fan to me
No one has EVER complained about Korach that I’ve seen. I mean, seriously, the guy is amongst the best in the game. Especially if he’s choosing to listen to the Angels broadcast instead. Talk about unprofessional and disrespecting the game.

Well, to answer the question
2008
Kotchman vs. RHP: .270 .315 .394
Kotchman vs. LHP: .368 .419 .574
Some sample size issues on both sides, but especially vs. lefties.
Career
Kotchman vs. RHP: .267 .334 .423
Kotchman vs. LHP: .305 .373 .411
Foulke has had 3 shaky outings in his last 4 appearances, but before that had given up just 7 ER in 23 IP this year. Of course, he’s only pitched 4 times in the past 3 weeks or so. Unless he was hurt and it wasn’t made public, it’s completely unacceptable that he’s pitching barely more than once a week. That’s just bad bullpen management.
A righty was the right move. Foulke wasn’t a bad move, necessarily. Just didn’t work this one time.

Foulke has bad peripherals and his stuff is flat out bad
ERAs:
O3: 2.06
04: 2.31
05: 5.91
06: 4.35
It was widely noted at in 05 that he had lost 3-5 mph on his fastball. He has not gotten that back, and has never had success with lowered velocity. This year his command is not even good. He is easily our worst reliever.

meant as reply to thedj
I would add:
If any our current pitchers lost a lot of velocity from one year to the next we would be very concerned (as we are, to some extent, with Street.) That’s exactly what happened to Foulke a long damn time ago and he hasn’t been any good since.
