Prospects on Kane County?
Hello Athletics Nation,
Cubs fan here. As you may or may not know, Tuesday night the Peoria Chiefs (yes, you saw them on ESPN the other day...hopefully since the crazed pitcher Castillo is likely out of baseball we will not have any more incidents, as that was horrible) will be taking on the Kane County Cougars at Wrigley Field, in what is believed to be the first minor league game ever at Wrigley. Over at the SBN counterpart Bleed Cubbie Blue, a few people were wondering what the Kane Co. team looks like prospect-wise; I read Paul Thomas's top 30 list and it looked to be by far the weakest stop in the A's organization. Is this true? Who should we be looking at as interesting players for Kane County? I'd be happy to report back after the game if you guys are wondering about how anyone in particular looks, I'm guessing not too many readers of AN attend Midwest League games. Any info would be appreciated, pretty much all I know is that Josh Vitters' brother is on the Kane Co. squad; we had heard Josh should be called up to Peoria in time for this game, but he has been out for about a week with a sprained ankle, so not sure if that is still the plan. Anyhow, thanks and good to see Gallagher with a solid start overall for the A's, although Murton certainly has not done anything except make it look like the Cubs actually knew what they were doing by benching him for 2 years.

1st round pick Weeks is at 2nd base, Petey Paramore is now in Kane County as
well. The ss,, Richard has stolen 30 bases this year, but there isn’t much top flight talent in KC

Not top prospects but other interesting names might be:
Anthony Capra, LHP – 2008 4th round draftee, supposedly a bit of a reach
Carlos Hernandez, LHP – 21 yo, 2006 35th round draftee, 38 K 7 BB in 39.2 IP
Tyson Ross, RHP, 2008 2nd round draftee, on DL
Shane Keough, OF, 21 yo, 2005 36th round draftee, terrible numbers but supposedly fast
When you have a chance to get a guy like Sean Gallagher, you take it!

I have a feeling Ross will not see another game this year. I think once he is healed, he becomes
a pet project of Ron Romanick, or whomever is the new Roving Minor League Pitching Guru, although keeping him with Romanick and Young, wouldn’t be too bad, as they rework his mechanics.

I agree
I think Ross will be better served to rest and get ready for instructional league. If the A’s are going to change his mechanics it makes no sense to let him keep pitching with the old ones.

Carlos Hernandez is a legitimate prospect despite where he was drafted
because he was a draft-and-follow, he would have received a legitimate bonus.
Grant Desme is a guy who was believed to have first-round talent last year, but he’s been injured pretty much constantly since before the A’s drafted him last year (he fell to the 2nd round with a wrist injury). His perfect world scenario has him turning into a Michael Cuddyer type RF (hopefully with more range in the outfield). If—big if—he’s fully healthy, he is probably the #2 prospect on the team after Weeks.

And yet I didn't see Hernandez listed among your Top 40
Where would you rank him?

Right outside it
He’d probably be a top 30 guy in most systems. I definitely considered him for the list.

Desme isn't with Kane County I don't think
He’s not listed on the roster on the Cougars site or on minorleaguebaseball.com’s roster.

Desme appears to have not been activated
yet, but he was transferred to the Kane County team. Minorleaguebaseballs transactions showed his movement to the team. But he has yet to appear at K.C.
and in fact never appeared in a game at Phoenix either. Last report from Melissa Lockard was he was injured and has shoulder and wrist problems.

Larry Cobb is a nice hustling 2B and CF.
He played 2B until Weeks reported and took over the position. Since then he has been moved back to his old position of CF.
Hamblin retired and went home to Arkansas. He was nice power hitting corner infielder from last years draft. Not a lot of big named talent at Kane County otherwise as numerous prospects have been moved up more recently to the Calif League.

If the A's do as they should and call up Richard (and maybe Cobb),
then you could see a couple of this years’ most interesting draftees for the A’s in SS Jason Christian or OF David Thomas. They’re both college draftees who need to be rushed to ever become real prospects (which the A’s HAVEN’T done with Cobb and Richard), but I doubt the A’s will do that. So I think the only semi prospects you can see are Jemile Weeks and Carlos Hernandez and maybe Brett Hunter (a top talent in college but who was injured and fell to the 7th round for the A’s; I believe he’s on team USA) if he signs in time.

I don't know why Cobb hasn't been called up
He’s not really a prospect, but he’s performing well enough to get a shot at a higher level.

justin friend
former junior college teammate of mine, has an inflated era and his walk rate is a bit high, but he strikes out far more than a batter per inning and has nasty stuff. always fun to watch pitch, even if things get interesting every once in a while.
is dj hollingsworth the 5th outfielder? he is also a former jc teammate, kinda neat that both of them are on KC.
