Shame on A's for not celebrating record

As is a growing trend in discounting the McAffee Coliseum fan experience, no mention on the scoreboard or P.A. was made today on Zegler's significant record.

Are they so paranoid that they can't deviate from the script, or is it incompetent marketing?  What an opportunity to let every fan feel they witnessed something very special, just maybe a percentage of them will come back a little more.   The rather sparse standing ovation wasn't due to apathy, it was the fact that too few knew.  As least that was true in my section.

Shame on the A's organization.  Can we get an owner who will  create and /or empower,  a decent marketing department as in the Dolich years??  Its NOT JUST HAVING GREAT ADVERTISING.

Michael Crowley, are you listening????

also the broadcast team

didnt realize that ziegler broke the record until someone told them. they said the fans must be cheering because they got an out or josh hamilton was up

Not true

They didn’t know if the fans knew, they’d been talking about it ever since Ziggy came in (and in fact thought that he set the record with the first out)

but I don't think they realized

That he broke the record with the first out recorded in that inning.

by GusanoQuemador on Jul 28, 2008 11:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Actually they talked about it

First they said he’d broken it, then said that he wouldn’t officially break it until he was taken out (or completed the inning). Apparently only full innings count, which I certainly wouldn’t have known either.

They had the graphics ready to go when he came in and it was the main topic of conversation the whole first half-inning (not to mention hoping that Bankston wouldn’t flip the ball into the stands like Hannahan did the game before)

That part was news to me, yeah.

They said David Feldman told them that but until that point I’d never heard a thing about it.

So, assuming Bradley homered instead of singled and Ziegler finished the inning, the way it sounds the record would’ve remained at 25 innings if that’s the rule.

Seems odd, because all along it was talked about like it was an out-based record, ie: the moment Ziegler got to 25 1/3 innings he passed McQuillan.

Either way, I’m glad Ziegler made it a moot point.

Me too

That would have really sucked for him (and been complete nonsense).

"There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want" -Bill Watterson

by nevermoor on Jul 28, 2008 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

No, the other way would have been complete nonsense

It is difficult to score in the first “third” of an inning. Imagine if he had loaded the bases, then gotten an out, then given up a hit. The official score wouldn’t have credited him with a “scoreless 1/3 of an inning” and to do so would have been absurd. An inning cannot be “scoreless” until it’s over.

The A's colors are green and gold.

by mikeA on Jul 28, 2008 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Then it's a shame it took until the record-setting inning in question for it to be clarified like that.

All along, I guarantee you the majority of the people following this assumed it was a running total of outs, not completed innings or appearances.

I’m guessing, then, if he got two outs in the 7th and left with nobody on he officially holds the record at 25 2/3 innings for the time being, but if he had a runner on base the guy that came in after him would’ve had to finish the inning without allowing the runner to score or it reverts back to 25 innings? There may still be some confusion.

by Flashfire on Jul 28, 2008 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Correct

It would be done exactly the same way it’s done in the box score. A pitcher’s box score line is complete either when an inning ends, or he leaves with no one on base, and it would be the same for this record. If he had left the game after recording one out, but not letting anyone on base, that would have counted for the record.

The A's colors are green and gold.

by mikeA on Jul 28, 2008 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

That does make sense now

I’m used to hearing “The pitcher’s line is complete” or “The pitcher’s book is closed” in situations like that.

It just goes back to something like that not being clarified in any way that I saw until yesterday, so the assumptions continued incorrectly.

But if they'd taken him out he would have had the record

So that’s a contradiction.

It seems to me that getting 76 consecutive outs without giving up a run is more impressive than 75 consecutive outs, which is why I was surprised to hear that there was only credit for the 76th if it was followed by #s 77 and 78 (or by pulling Ziggles).

Anyway, I’m glad it all worked out for him. That’s the important thing.

Honestly, pretty random.

A screen name that a friend of mine used back in my serious online gamer days (original CounterStrike).

He used “Ziggler” and so Ziggles was obvious (if not actually shorter). With Ziegler’s name being so close I just transfered it.

Great line

The PR department fired up the Giants too after declaring the rivalry one sided. You should always let sleeping dogs (even if they are poodles) lie.

apples & oranges

I agree with you that placing a full page ad telling a bunch of losers their team is full of losers is disrespectful! However, flashing on the scoreboard that your player set a Major League record is NOT disrespectful!!

Lets go A's

It may be a record, but not a record that deserves, stopping a game or anything. I

wasn’t at the park, but if they didn’t at least put it on the Jumbotron, I would be dissapointed.

by theblackpearl on Jul 27, 2008 5:01 PM PDT reply actions

I think they should have stopped the game, and had a parade

with a marching band come through the field tossing confetti everywhere. Face it, that would have been damn funny.

Nah

They should have just turned the sprinklers on. When the Giants did it, we won. Maybe it should become a trend.

The A's should put Ziggy's face on the scoreboard now, when he comes in to a Slayer song, I don't know, War Ensemble or something

and flash “GAME OVER!!!” on the scoreboard,

and then shoot off some fireworks

and then we could all do the wave and chant

GAMER, GAMER, GAMER

A's break 100 year old records everyday...don't they???

I was at the game, no mention on the scoreboard. What a shame! Zig is giving his cleats to the Hall of Fame…now if that is not an indication of significance, I don’t know what would be. And the A’s did not even acknowledge it.

Can you imagine...

the press coverage if he were a Yankee or Red Sock? No mentions on ESPN. The Rangers announcers talked about it at length.

I haven't had a chance to watch ESPN

Has there been a mention of it yet on Sportscenter, ESPN news, Baseball Tonight?...

At the game, it really is a shame nothing was splashed up on the scoreboard – But who knows, maybe the lack of acknowledgement was at the request of Ziggy and/or the team

Ziggy deserved some props

My girlfriend and I were at the game, sitting in the front row directly in front of our bullpen mound. As Ziggy warmed up, we took some great pictures and were very excited about the possibility of seeing him break a very old MLB record. When he did break the record, we were part of the “small” ovation that knew he had done it. But then… nothing was announced! Needless to say, we were very disappointed.

By the way, before the game Ziggy was very generous with his time, talking with fans and signing their various items. I’m glad to see a great guy break this record.

I was watching bp in front of the bullpen before the game

With my kids and called “Congratulations” (as he had tied the record on friday night -or was it sat?) and he said thanks…I always love watching Curt Young and the pitchers before the game, and there were at least three who came up and signed for the kids…
