The Final Countdown - Trading Deadline Approaches
Only one more week till the Trade Deadline! We still have our trade bait ready to go. So lets star the rumors and discussion and, if we get around to it, the actual trades, flowing! As I just explained to my sister...
“It’s six days before the trade deadline and you didn’t answer your phone when I called??!?”
It’s like Christmas in July for Billy Beane. Wonder what new toys he wants this year….please please please please can it be a couple hitters??!? I’m tired of giving up pitchers…

Blez phoned me yesterday, and when I heard it was him
I immediately said, “Oh my God, who did we trade now?” Then I hung up before he could answer, to clear the line just in case Billy Beane was trying to call me to tell me personally. Turns out there was no trade and I think Blez is a bit mad at me.
Late July makes me crazy.

Brignac not in the lineup in AAA
And one of the guys the Rays were after was just traded. This obviously means we’re trading Street and Murton for Brignac and Crosby for LaRoche!
Actually I have a feeling we won’t make another move. Trades seem to come in two for us. Hudson/Mulder, Haren/Swisher, Harden/Blanton came and then Zito wasn’t traded despite rumors, and then Blanton wasn’t traded (immediately) despite rumors. It’s just a gut feeling of mine that this 7/31 will come and pass quietly.

I keep hearing
Street: Teams are interested in Street (Dodgers, Mets, Brewers), then hear they aren’t interested anymore. That’s not a good sign. I’m hoping someone decides they need an end-of-the-bullpen presence, and want to control him for multiple years.
Street projection: Stays. I don’t think Beane will get what he wants, and will hold on instead. Unfortunately.
Embree: Everyone needs a lefty reliever, but Embree hasn’t been much good this year. Regardless, he probably won’t be a type-A free agent, meaning hopefully Beane decides he can let Embree go for a marginal talent.
Embree projection: Traded to St. Louis Cardinals for SS Peter Kozma.
Duchscherer: With Crede on the DL, Fields is the starting 3B for the White Sox, which was the only suitor for Duke that I’ve heard about. Duke wants an affordable contract, and Billy loves him.
Duchscherer projection: Stays. Signs extension for 3 years, $27 million to stay with A’s.
Ellis: Ellis is kind of underrated. If you look at his hitting stats, the only thing down is his average. He’s still the best defensive 2B in the game, and he’s a better hitter than people think. Even though we picked up some 2B, they can play elsewhere. Billy loves Ellis, and Ellis loves Oakland.
Ellis projection: Stays. Signs extension for 4 years, $20 million to stays with A’s.
Crosby: There isn’t much interest in Crosby that I’ve heard of. The Dodgers were mentioned, but quickly cooled. I don’t think anyone wants him. Hopefully he hits well enough over the rest of the year to be worth keeping.
Crosby projection: Stays. Still under contract for 2009.
Basically, the hope is that someone pops up and wants Street, which I don’t see happening. Honestly I wouldn’t be shocked to see all five of these guys still on the roster come August. Once again, unfortunately.

by sf drift king on Jul 25, 2008 11:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I got that number
Straight from the Polanco deal. Polanco got 4 years, $18.2 million. I gave Ellis a little more due to inflation. I doubt he gets much more than that.
by Gallagher's Watermelons on Jul 26, 2008 1:22 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not disagreeing that he might get more
But Duke is loyal, and he’s been quoted as saying he just wanted enough to be comfortable, and that he’d like to stay in Oakland. The return we’d get for him as a 30 year old first-year starter with past injury issues isn’t nearly the value we’d get from him staying. I don’t see him leaving town, at least not before the deadline this year. We can always shop him in the offseason or next year.
by Gallagher's Watermelons on Jul 26, 2008 1:21 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also, an extension would keep Duke here
during years the A’s figure to be extremely good (2010-2012) so he’d see the dividends of this rebuilding that is currently so frustrating.

If they were to trade away all the players you mentioned...
...they’d be conceding 2009 right now, IMHO. I don’t think that’s necessary. I think they can legitimately contend in ‘09 and beyond using some of what they have now as a nucleus, even if the rest of ‘08 goes down the toilet.
Don’t get me wrong, they oh-so-desparately need a serious bat… that will produce very soon, if not immediately… so I don’t consider anybody untouchable, but I’d prefer they keep/re-sign Duke and Ellis. Those two are solid veterans that can lead the team.
Embree should go, IMHO, and I’d be fine with Street and/or Crosby being traded.

Ben Zobrist appears to have been demoted since our series with the Rays ended, and is playing SS for them. So perhaps Brignac is being promoted to the Big club?

A new rumor regarding A’s closer Huston Street seems to surface daily, and Friday’s speculation du jour, courtesy of a scout working Oakland’s game against the visiting Rangers, had the A’s sending Street to the Dodgers for third baseman Andy LaRoche “and change.” LaRoche and Street both participated in pre-game warmups with their respective teams Friday night, though, so if a deal is indeed made, it wouldn’t be announced until late Friday night or at some point over the weekend. LaRoche, a 24-year-old right-handed hitter, is batting .214 with two homers, three RBIs and a .333 on-base percentage in 26 games with Los Angeles this season. Also said to be interested in Street, among others, are the Reds, Rays and Brewers; those same three teams and a handful of others have reportedly kicked the tires on the availability of A’s lefty setup man Alan Embree. —Mychael Urban

Street apologist or not,
this would be a correct move. The A’s need a bat with big upside at third base and LaRoche is the best available. The bullpen will survive without Street.
It’d be nice if they could pick up a decent hitter at the A level to go with him. There’s not much room left near the majors.

I know you like Petit, and I think he might be alright as a light-hitting, great glove shortstop, but with Crosby and Ellis both possibly gone in the next year or two, getting a real top-prospect middle infielder wouldn’t hurt.

My first reaction was: Colletti’s an idiot.
But, keep in mind, for the Elias rankings, 3b are ranked with 2b and SS. Blake just barely missed out on being a type A player after 2007. He was the highest ranked type B in the AL. If he was in the NL, he would have been a type A. Given that he’s having a very good season, he’s got a good shot of ending up as a type A.

I scoff at their scoffing - maybe they don't want to do the trade, fine.
But they are “scoffing” at acquiring a solid reliever who can close, at a time when they have just lost their closer, in exchange for a prospect who is now in his mid-20s and still can’t crack their lineup in favor of Blake DeWitt as they just acquired Casey Blake. And they are tied for first place in a division just waiting to be taken. That trade wouldn’t help them win now? And all they have to part with is a major-league ready prospect they choose not to play?

A strong argument can be made
that a Street-LaRoche trade would be a lousy deal for the A’s.
LaRoche hasn’t been hitting for power, and the Dodgers weren’t playing him even before they acquired Blake (except for recent days). He might turn out to be a total bust, yet another guy who gets a few walks but will never hit for power.
Street, for all of his flaws, is a cost-controlled reliever with plenty of experience as a closer. Right now, he’s a better baseball player.

But we need a 3B toot sweet
And we don’t need Street as a closer in ‘09 since we have several serviceable replacements. Basically, upgrading Hannahan to LaRoche >>> than the downgrade in closer.

I still like Street to the DRays.
Makes a lot of sense, to me at least.

Sucks I would love Meloan in Green & Gold
Having Devine, Casilla, Meloan would really solidify the 8-9 innings for the next few years.

I was wildly unimpressed when I saw him last year
Could not figure out at all why so many people thought he was good.

According to Rosethal..
the A’s have been in regular conversations with the Pirates about Jason Bay. Maybe a three way trade is on the way.

That would be awesome, IMO, as long as
Cahill and B. Anderson stay. We’ll see if that’s possible.

Absolutely
Plus, if that happens I may never shut up about picking him as the “best target for the A’s” in my FanPost 6 weeks ago.

Bay, Sanchez, and McLouth removed from Pitts' lineup in thw 5th
Go crazy with with that fact. If there’s a three-way, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Dodgers getting their long-talked of target Jack Wilson, we can give the Bucs BoCro and LAD Embree, and we get LaRoche. I don’t know how we get Bay or what the Pirates get but that would be cool too.

Don't ever do that again :(
You didn’t tell me what the score was…8-1…
Maybe they’re just resting them :(

lol
I think they were just taking them out to rest. But still, the fifth? That’s awful early to rest starters. FWIW, I still don’t see us making a deal prior to the deadline. If we’re going to get Bay, it won’t be until the offseason at the earliest.
C’mon, Billy, make me eat those words just like you did when I said Blanton wouldn’t be traded.

Justin Duchscherer was removed in the 7th inning today with nobody out! Verrrrrrry suspicious…
