Nady Traded To Yankees
Here's the story. I thought it might be worthy of a fanpost since Nady's name has been included in discussions regarding possible A's trades. I don't know if this trade decreases the odds that the Pirates will deal Jason Bay - if it were Billy Beane it wouldn't, as Beane has twice traded two key players within a week of one another. Someone more familiar with the Yankees' prospects can analyze who got the better end of this apparent deal.

MLB Trade Rumors says that the deal is bad for Pittsburgh
doesn’t think that the main guy the Bucs got for Nady/Marte was a good guy to be a centerpiece of a deal, and would rather it had been Ian Kennedy.

this isn't surprising
isn’t this the same team that traded for an aging and expensive Matt Morris last year. Team’s like Pittsburgh will always suck.

Jose Tabata might or might not be a good prospect
He’s in a no way comparable to Matt Morris.

They have completely new management now
It’s more than a little unfair to say this. Huntington is from the Cleveland organization, which has done pretty well on a small budget recently.

To add
The Pirates got the following guys:
Jose Tabata – Double A Trenton
.248 AVG, 3 HR, 36 RBI, 10 SB 79 Games
Ross Ohlendorf – Triple A Scranton
4.03 ERA, 1-1, 22.1 IP, 25 SO
Phil Coke – Double A Trenton
2.60 ERA, 9-6, 114.1 IP, 109 SO
George Kontos – Double A Trenton
3.77 ERA, 3-9, 107.1 IP, 103 SO
This doesn’t look THAT good for the Pirates.

Tabata is 19 in AA
.763 OPS in A+ at 18; .797 OPS at A at 17. He’s a great prospect.

"Great"?
See: rant about ARL in the other thread. He basically hasn’t had an extra-base hit all year, and the scouting reports on him are terrible.

ARL has nothing to do with it
I don’t know about the scouting reports, but the Yankees obviously liked him enough to put him in AA at age 19. He had a reasonable number of xbh the past two years, and why should we expect him to do anything in AA this year? He’s probably the youngest guy in the league. It’s a strange decision by the Yanks to put him there, but that’s not his fault. To hit as well as he did in the FSL at age 18 is extremely impressive.

Fernando Martinez is in AA too,
in the same league. He’s a couple months younger. And he was in AA last season too.
The scouting reports say he has makeup and conditioning issues.

If you believe in Tabata's upside
this deal might work for Pittsburgh.
I’m looking up these other guys, and I’m not sold on Tabata’s upside.

Also
I noticed that Brignac isn’t in AAA Durham’s lineup. Maybe a Rays trade is going down tonight as well.
Nothing to back the idea up, just speculation.

looks good...
for the Yankees that is. Marte is a top lefty specialist. They need that. I’ve also been a fan of Nady and with Hideki down the Yankees were in need of someone they could count on in the OF

I'm surprised Phil Coke got so good
he is from my hometown, and I remember back in the day when he wasn’t that good…but with age comes maturity i guess…overall i like the deal for the Yankees, they get two proven players whereas the pirates get four “ifs”...

I bet a lot of GMs are wondering what happened.
I mean, they gotta be saying, how did they get both of those guys for just really one high upside prospect. I think this is a case where Pittsburg really made a mistake by dealing both players in one trade. Marte is not just some throw in, he is probably the best lefty on the trade market (sans Fuentes). If they wanted Tabata so badly, they should have just traded Nady straight up for him and then still gotten a legit piece for Marte.
The last two trades (this one and the deal for Rauch) seem to have gone against the team dealing away the MLB level talent. This does not bode well for us and getting what we want for Street, Duke, etc (unless it works for us because we end up keeping them).

OK, so
isn’t this now like the 17th time Xavier Nady has been traded?
Funny how some guys manage to fall right into that category of good enough to be desired, yet not good enough to be untouchable.

To be fair...
the organizations for which Nady has toiled have a lot to do with his movement as well. Many of them have no use for talent.

???
Nady was traded by the Padres to the Mets for Mike Cameron, because the Mets were looking to trade and unhappy Cameron after they signed Beltran.
After about half a season, the Mets traded him for Oliver Perez.
In both cases, he was traded for useful players. In the Padres case, they clearly got the better of the trade. Cameron is as good a hitter as Nady, and plays good D in CF. In the Mets case, they traded an OK corner OF for a young starting pitcher with upside, who’s been pretty good for them, the 36.7 IP in 2006 aside.
It isn’t as if Nady was dumped by the Padres, or the Mets, for crap.

Beane stirring the pot?
For many years, Nady was a known Billy Beane favorite. My sense is that this year, ironically, now that Nady has become a hot commodity, Beane was less interested in him, not more.

The Pittsburgh's package changed
This from the Yankees transactions:
7/26/08 Acquired OF Xavier Nady and LHP Damaso Marte from the Pirates in exchange for Minor League RHPs Jeff Karstens, Daniel McCutchen and Ross Ohlendorf and Minor League OF Jose Tabata.
Apparently once Tabata and Ohlendorf cleared their physicals, the Pirates had a list of players to choose from.
