2008 Draft Review

I know, I know its a little early to make judgements on the draft.  Especially with regards to pitchers, many of the draftees have small sample size.  But because I'm bored at work and the A's have an off day, why the hell not review our new Athletics.  Here is a list of pick 1-10, but also some other intriguing prospects from the new draft.

1st pick. Jemile Weeks 2B, Miami, S/R (B+)

  • Kane County: .300 BA, 0 HR, 6 RBI, 6 SB, 12:7 bb/k

After a slow, slow start Weeks has hit .424 over his past 8 games to up his average to .300.  And hes killing lefties to the tune of .368.  More importantly, his obp is .462 (12bbs/7 ks) and he has shown some of the anticipated speed (6 for 8 in steals).  Now for the bad, he is slugging .340 and his defense is adequate at best.  Still, he is showing some promise, and I, for one, am excited he is in the system.  Once power comes, he will upgrade to an A.

2nd pick. Tyson Ross RHP, UC Berkley (Inc.)

  • Kane County: 5.0 ip, 2 hits, 1.80 era, 5:0 k/bb

The 6'5" local righty was an intriguing pick.  The thing I like the most: he was praying to be an Athletic during the draft.  While he showed solid numbers in his first 2 pro appearances for Kane County (5.0 ip 2 hits 1.80 era 5:0 ks to walks), the upright, odd delivery might have caught up to him.  Currently on 7-day DL, but can't see him being forced to pitch again this season.

3rd pick. Petey Paramore C, Arizona State, S/R (B+)

  • Rookie League Athletics: .364 BA, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 0 SB, 10:2 bb/k

Another switch hitter, Petey has started his pro career on fire.  He is hitting .364 with a .563 obp and 1.017 ops!  Don't get too excited, he has only played 10 games(hasn't played since July 18th). The best thing: he is known as an amazing defensive catcher (4 errors in college).

4th pick. Anthony Capra LHP, Witchita State (D)

  • Kane County: 6.0 ip, 7.75 era, 2:3 k/bb, 2 HR allowed

A head-scratcher for the fourth-round, Capra's line is shaky at best.  With only limited innings, this might be a harsh grading, especially after a run in Omaha.  Interesting to note his splits which show lefties ripping the ball to the tune of .500 while righties hit .167.  But its hard to get excited about a .333 baa, with a 1.67 whip and 2 hrs allowed.

5th pick. Jason Christian SS, Michigan, L:R (A)

  • SS Vancouver: .322 BA, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 4 SB, 21:35 bbs/ks

The only things limiting him from an A+ is his inconsistent D and high strikeout rate.  Otherwise, Jason looks to be a big (6'3") SS with at least some power (.483 slugging).  The high K rate (35 ks in 34 games) is a concern, but he hits with runners in scoring position (.410) and shows enough promise to keep an eye on.

6th pick. Tyreace House, OF, Coll. of the Canyons, R/R (C+??)

  • Rookie League: .219 BA, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 5 SB 2:4 bbs/ks

Hardest grade yet because the talent is huge for this guy.  Peformance wise, no better than a C, but potential has him at least at a B.  Hit .348 with 31 steals in his last year at College of Canyons (Dana Eveland's old stomping grounds).  He has shown great speed with 5-5 sbs, but no power (.219 slugging%).  Too small a sample to judge with just 39 ABs.  Also, seen limited playing time as of late.

7th pick. Brett Hunter RHP, Pepperdine (Inc.)

  • Unsigned Team USA: 13.1 ip, 6 hits, 17:10 k/bb

Lets give him what he wants.  Taj Adib posted an article in his Monday Minors that stated he wanted $2,000,000, and I say we should do it. While his velocity is down, he is recovering from an injury and pitching well for Team USA.  To put it into Taj's words, he is pitching "wildy, but effective".  Reports had him hitting 100 mph pre injury and hitting mid to high 90s now, but not consistently. Please show him the money!!

8th pick. Jeremy Barfield, OF, San Jac JC, R/L (D-)

  • SS Vancouver: .239 BA, 0 HR, 12 RBI, 0 SB, 6:15 bb/k

Huge (6'5" 240), so where is the power?  With a slugging % of .303 and an OPS of .581, he is struggling to say the least.  His home/ road splits suggest he hates the homr ballpark (.183/.306) and his 0-1 in SBs show little speed.   He did just turn 20 and is playing above Rookie League, but overall, nothing to be excited about yet.

9th pick. Mitchell Levier, OF, Cal State Fullerton, L/L (D)

  • SS Vancouver: .235 BA, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 3 SB, 4:24 bb/k

The lefty CFer has been so-so thus far.  In 106 PA, he has 4 walks to the tune of a .271 obp.  And his OPS....555.  He also strikes out almost 25% of the time and isn't too big of a threat on the base paths 3-5 SBs.  But he is from Fullerton, who produces some legit talent, and he is left handed.  Therefore, I will probablly follow his career wherever he goes.

10th pick. Rashuan Dixon, OF, Mississippi HS, R/R (A)

  • Rookie League: .255 BA, 4 HR, 22 RBI, 3 SB, 7:38 bb/k

The defenition of a 5-tool player, Rashuan is holding his own and then some as an 18 year old in Rookie ball.  The .311 obp is nothing to be excited about, but the .832 OPS is.  In 23 games, Rashuan has 25 hits: 0 2B, 7 3B!!!, 4 HR.  The kid is simply to fast to hit 2Bs!!!!  Hopefully, he will be able to use his speed effectivley on the basepaths (3-5 SBs), and we could have a stud CF.  Would like to see him hit in SS Vancouver, but his BA needs improvement.

**Note: today, Rashuan went 1-2 with his first 2B, 2 RBI, and a walk.

Other interesting draftees:

14th pick. David Thomas, OF, Catawaba College, S/R (A+)

  • Rookie League: .429 BA, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SB, 2:1 bb/k
  • SS Vancouver: .329 BA, 0 HR, 11 RBI, 3 SB, 14:15 bb/k

David had an unbelieveable career for small Catawba College, and he has brought it will him to the pros.  There is hard to find something negative about his game besides the lack of HR power, and his current .444 OBP and .873 OPS are impressive.  David is about to turn 22, but he could be a fast riser in our system.  He has speed (5-6 SB), plate discipline (16:16 bb/k), and the track record to be a pesky hitter in the majors.  Keep your eye on him, I wouldn't be shocked at another promotion sooner rather than later.

15th pick. Nino Leyja, SS, Houston HS, R/R (A)

  • Rookie League: .325 BA, 0 HR, 12 RBI, 5 SB, 13:12 bb/k

A 17 year old that can hit with plate discipline is hard to find.  Especially as a SS. While he might not be hitting HRs, he has 6 2Bs and 3 3Bs, which is good for a .481 slugging% and a .903 OPS.  Nino also has very good speed (5-6 SB) and his L/R split is .333/.323.  He hits .387 with RISP, but his 7 errors in 19 games is a little worriesome.  Better D would give him an A+.

26th pick. Ryan Doolittle, RHP, Cumberland County College (D-)

  • Rookie League: 19.2 ip, 27 hits, 5.49 era, 11:5 k/bb, .342 bba

Flat out: he is getting hit and hit hard.  Luckily, he has only allowed 1 HR, but the little Doolittle might be in over his head to this point. Maybe he will bounce back a la his brother.

EDIT: the rankings are solely by numbers. certain players such as Dixon, House, and Barfield were altered due to potential or, in Barfield's case, an awful slugging% for a power bat

EDIT: I am not ranking them as prospects, its their production up to this point.  Obviously its to early to judge them as a prospect....

Weeks..

People need to stop hating on JeMile Weeks, the pick may have been a slight reach, but it fit the organizations needs at the time, and its there wasn’t anybody who the DEFINITELY should have picked ahead of him.

See Below..

There was nobody selected after Weeks that definitely should have been picked instead of him. The two complaints I hear are the fat 3B Wallace and the very raw Hicks, both debatable, but nothing definite. I just think the dissapointment of not getting Smoak makes people hate Weeks more than he deserves at this point.

I agree

Miiddle infielders that can hit are in short supply in the A’s system. Was Weeks picked high? Yes. Would he have been available to the A’s if he was passed in the first round? No. Clearly they drafted out of need and I for one was hoping for a 1st round middle infielder that can hit. Sorry Bobby, Mark, Cliff and whoever else. You’re just not good hitters.

What is interesting to me are the subsequent trades netting 2 second basemen. I’m curious as to those moves and whether one of those players can or will be moved to short or third.

Sure

if you think Weeks is a middle infielder.

I think he’s quite possibly an outfielder. And Hicks was pretty clearly the better pick for an outfielder.

This doesn’t mean I think Weeks is trash or will never be a good player, just that I think Aaron Hicks is a superior prospect.

Regardless of what I think he is

It’s obvious the A’s think he is a middle infielder. Because if they thought he was an OFer, then obviously Hicks would have been the better choice.

Thanks for the report

A couple questions:

What are you basing your evaluation of potential on? Is it your own? Or is it the current consensus of scouts?

Any word on Hunter signing or not?

Can we really evaluate people when they’re playing in the Rookie League? I mean really, that league (more than others in the minors) is more about instruction and development than anything else.

by oaktownmario on Jul 24, 2008 2:23 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

1. The grade is based mostly on numbers. I have researched several of the players pre and post draft, and graded accordingly to several prospects, most notably House, Dixon, and Barfield.

2. Hunter is a classic draft and follow. He will not be signed anytime soon and has demanded at least $2,000,000.

3. A true evaluation is tough for these draftees, especially the Rookie Leaguers. It is hard to adjust and power numbers will suffer. I was mostly looking at pure numbers and ranking them as to how they are developing. The only one I have altered due to potenital was House and Dixon, and put Barfield so low due to his awful slugging%.

by rharden40 on Jul 24, 2008 2:58 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Umm ...

1. It’s pretty ridiculous to make judgments on the picks based on, at most, a month’s worth of playing time. ALL of the samples are extremely small and, even if they weren’t, would only be moderately useful.

2. If he’s not signed fairly soon, he won’t be signed at all. Them’s the rules. Classic draft and follows no longer exist.

you obviously didnt get it....

i was rating it based on numbers….did you not see that i said obviously this is too early to judge them as prospects…im just saying how their looking as of almost two months…i know all the samples are small, i think everyone does…and some are a lot smaller than others (house, pitchers)

if i was ranking them in the top prospects based on their stats so far i could understand….

as for brett hunter, i stand corrected. but its aug 15th or 18th i believe for the last day he could be signed

Someone's feeling grumpy today

Think of it as a “how are these guys doing” post, and ignore the evaluations, if you want to. It’s still a useful service to the site.

Agreed

While you certainly can’t definitively learn too much from a couple weeks of games, the usefulness is certainly greater than zero. Personally, I’m curious as to how players are doing, even after a couple weeks. I attempt to keep up with stuff on my own, but this week has been busy and I haven’t been able to….accordingly, this post was very helpful to me.

Regardless of how statistically inclined a baseball fan might be, I don’t think too many people would really enjoy just checking in twice a year to see how guys have been doing under the guise of sample size. It’s not like I don’t check up on the A’s until June because April and May can’t tell us anything.

Shawn Haviland

A RHP we drafted in the 33rd round of the 2008 draft. He’s currently in Vancover and he’s pitching quite well.

20.1 IP, 0.89 ERA, 20 hits, 0 HR, 20:5 K/BB Ratio.

The number of hits isn’t great but his K / BB ratio is good. He’s been acting as a reliever but has started 1 game. For the 33rd round he’s been putting up good numbers and he’s defiently someone to keep an eye on.

Preston "Petey" Paramore and pitcher promoted

Paramore just showed up on the Kane County roster, as did pitcher Carlos Hernandez, a 2007 draftee who was putting up great numbers in Vancouver, (1.82 ERA, 38 K, 7 BB in 39.2 IP)

While I applaud the effort put into this post,

I do think it’s too early to really be ranking guys based on performance this year. The sample sizes are too small, the levels are too low, and often guys in partial first seasons are worn out from playing since February.

My ranking of these guys at this point when I did my list a couple of days ago was 90% projection/scouting/college #s, if not more. The pro numbers just don’t say very much yet.

Pretty snazzy obp throughout his career, though.

Per MLB 2008 Draftracker

Paramore is an interesting prospect…here is a scouting report from MLB.com 2008 Draftracker

Arm Strength: He’s got average arm strength, but is very, very accurate and has a quick release time.

Fielding: Paramore could handle catching in the big leagues right now. He’s got soft hands and positions himself perfectly behind the plate

Range: He moves effortlessly and makes it look very easy.

Hitting Ability: Paramore is a switch-hitter, better from the right side, who has a good game plan at the plate and is able to spray line drives to all fields. He’s particularly good with runners in scoring position and rarely strikes out.

by rharden40 on Jul 24, 2008 4:52 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Actually sounds a lot like Kendall (the better years)

Spraying line drives to all fields + rarely strikes out.

Keep in mind Kendall was one of the best C in baseball for awhile, just not by the time he got to us.

Thanks for the update.

I was wondering how some of the draftees were doing. I think the evaluation parts may be early but the updates were good.

by A'sfaninNC on Jul 24, 2008 4:52 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think the biggest thing in the draft we're all waiting for is for the A's to sign Hunter ($2M price tag apparently)

The next questions are if/when are the A’s going to build Ross’s Mechanics. Ross’s injury looks like just the excuse to do it this off season in the instructional league. Next is if Jamile Weeks will amount to anything, and if he can ever hit for any semblance of power. And finally, when will Dixon get promoted to, at the very least, Short Season Vancouver. My guess on Dixon is that they feel that a 17 year old shouldn’t be thrown out there with a bunch of college students and should spend the rest of the season in the Rookie League before, perhaps, getting sent to Kane County.

Elgie

I want to see Elgie signed too.

If the A’s can get both Hunter and Elgie signed, this could end up being one of the better drafts in years, and it would also make up for reaching with their #1 pick and having no sandwich picks.

Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

by Threepwood XX on Jul 24, 2008 7:01 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We'll just have to wait and see

The A’s were able to sign Dixon quick because of the multi-sport exemption. But MLB is leaning on clubs to not announce over-slot signings for other guys until close to the deadline. Why, I haven’t the slightest idea.

This system is such a freaking joke.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on Jul 24, 2008 10:27 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think you know why, but won't like the reason

They think early announcements of overslot signings will hurt other teams’ negotiating position with their draftees.

by ohmangoAs on Jul 24, 2008 10:35 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Year after Year, the A's adhear to the slot system it seems. Hell, they go cheap and go under slot many times.

And its screwed them over. The RedSox, Yankees and Tigers have all gone over slot tons of times, and they’ve profited quite a bit from that.

So why not the A’s? We have the money this year-hell, Emil Brown might be our highest salaried player not on the DL after the trade deadline for all we know-and we’ve already gone after Inoa. Why not sign Hunter and co. And next year’s draft class is supposed to be relativly weak.

by Zonis on Jul 24, 2008 11:28 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think they're willing to

They just have to decide if he’s worth it. I, for one, will be fine with either decision because I like that we made the pick and I trust our talent evaluators.

by nevermoor on Jul 25, 2008 9:12 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Seriously...

The Red Sox are going way over slot to sign 4-5 guys. With the money we are saving this season there should be no reason we can’t sign Hunter, Elgie, Warren, and Berroa. Another 4 million should sign all of them.

Christian:

Granted, it’s sort of silly to play around with these small samples, but anyway:
1. #3 OPS in the Northwest League.
2. His 3 HRs (all on the road) are impressive given that Vancouver is the toughest place to hit a HR in the entire minor leagues.

That really was silly, though…
