I hate this team...

No, seriously...  I do.  They are crap!  Always losing the close games.  Run differential should put us in 1st place.  Pythagoras lies.  Let's face it, we need more hitters.  Do we have any on the horizon in the next 3 years?

Who is batting cleanup today, Bob?  Emil Brown?  Well, no...  hopefully, after this year, it'll be Jack Cust for us.  But, maybe that's only if Billy doesn't decide to re-sign the RBI Machine to a long term extension after he leads us in RBI this year.

I taught my kid to love the A's....  he's 2 1/2 years old.  "Let's go to a ballgame, daddy!"  I don't take him to watch them anymore.  It's too depressing.  (And, I don't want him to watch batters strike out looking...  I actually want him to swing when he gets to T-Ball.)

I was kinda excited when Brooks Conrad got the callup...  what's he now?  0 for everything?  What a fool was I?  I'm still rootin' for ya, Brooks.  But, seriously, would Brooks or  Wes or Jack or Huston be on any other major league roster?

Nevertheless, I want to see all all the vets gone...  every last one.

Huston Street as a closer, for christ sake!  The guy can barely throw a fastball over 82 MPH.  He should be the first to go...  Ellis next.  And, finally, when some team is totally desperate...  Duke, because we'll get the most for him at the very last minute.  Put us out of our misery by July 31st.

I know this isn't worthy of a fAnPoSt...  but, I no longer care.

I use "we" and 'us" quite liberally throughout this fAnPoSt...  did you notice that?

Edit:  Get some hitters, Billy, or see attendance down around the 7,000 per game level.

AN.... downhill lately.

But seriously, I can’t blame new-ish fans for being so down about rebuilding. The A’s front office has done so well over the last few years that no one is used to rebuilding. Try to think back to the Berroa years. The Jaha years… At least we have talent coming up….

WOW

I don’t hate the team, but I do agree we need a hitter. We need someone who is looking to hit the hell out of the ball and not just take a walk with a runner on second. Brown needs to be gone by July 31st or at least reduced to pinch hitting. The young guys need to play more! I love the big hurt but he is getting up there in years and his time was the 1990’s.

So who is out there we could get? Who do we give up?

Now Beane has stated he is rebuilding the team so this year is a wash unless the angels fall flat. I like Sweeney, Gonzales and Buck in the outfield and Barton at 1st. I would say he is going through the sophomore slump so let’s not get too worried. Those guys all need time to grow and that is this year. The same goes for the pitching. Now Gallagher, Smith, Eveland and Braden need to keep going out there and work on improving their game. Duke needs to show he can handle pitching 190-200+ innings. He has shown he can be a good starter.

Lets go A's

If you dont care...

Then good riddance to you…we don’t need fans like you…

Yes, its frustrating, but I won’t give up on this team…It’s hard to watch, but I’m still going to watch and will still root for my beloved A’s

He's just venting.

A lot of longtime fans feel disappointed at the turn of events. Rebuilding can be a tough pill to swallow. Let people bitch and moan, this is where others can feel the pain! I feelya Foolish, even though, I still plan to keep going to games and watching the young players develop . It’s also fun to watch Ziggy get his big chance and he’s knocking them dead. I know it’s no comfort when you feel as if Harden and Bonds could’ve made this season interesting but it is what it is. You’ll get past this mood!

I'm right there with you...

I still record the games, but I don’t studiously avoid hearing the score, then go home and start watching right from the start anymore. I check the late inning score before watching to see if we’re even in the game. I don’t want to waste 3 or 4 hours watching them put up two hits, zero runs and strike out a ton. Not fun, not exciting, not interesting. BORING!

They’ll turn it around sooner or later, hopefully, but in the meantime, well, I’ve got better ways to spend my time.

We were teased just enough to care...

...in the 1st half of the season.
Billy made these moves regardless of the “success” on the field and it truly ticked off a lot of A”s fans.

If you listen to the moronic comments from professional A’ s basher Ralph Barbieri who states that the A’s “always trade away their stars” and that ticks off the fans he has a point, to a degree. Let’s not forget he sold his sole to Barry Bonds like everyone else over the last several years and now we see the results of that erroneous decision.

Ultimately we can’t argue with the A’s winning % over the last 10 years. Beane’s latest rebuilding job is appearing to be a year too early as opposed to a year too late. Let’s hope he can plug the holes in our , yes pathetic, offense while mainting superior defense and pitching.

Injuries have also contributed to the lack of production this year, but we are used to that by now. I see hope for the future, but dang is it painful right now.

The White Flag Has Officially Been Raised

Did people actually think the A’s would make the playoffs this year??? Is it really that heartbreaking???

Anyways, it’s good to see that players on the team won’t allow themselves to see the White Flag. It’s the reason Emil Brown (Veteran) runs out to LF every night. It’s the reason Big Frank and Mike Sweeney join the team on Road Trips and support the young guys. I saw some legitimate fire and fight during the series @ Tampa Bay. A’s players put up a fight. That’s all you can really expect at this point in the season, right???

Positives:

- Gonzalez looks like a legit CF and bat
- Same w/ Ryan Sweeney in RF
- Suzuki is surpassing all expectations
- The Brad Ziegler Story is UNBELIEVABLE.
- Duke might win the Cy Young
- 2008 MLB Team ERA Title?
- Big Frank passing Ted Williams and Willie McCovey w/ 2 more HR’s

  • There are still many, many reasons to watch this team **

by GeorgiaBoy on Jul 24, 2008 9:21 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Frustrating is the key word

That is what you should feel for the team. It’s a team that COULD be good, mostly due to the pitching and defense. However each time our offense fails to score and our pitching ends up with one weak inning that kills a win…all I can feel is very frustrated. I think there were at least 5 late game losses that should have been wins. Especially that damn one against the angels. Combine that with the numerous times we just needed a couple more runs to win. The team is still loveable, we still have plenty of potential, we’ve just got big big weaknesses. Enough that I think we can’t win any world series this year. What also scares me is that Eveland and Smith aren’t dealing anymore. Eveland is especially bad the past month. We gotta get them back on track.

sober up

and thanks for the veiled shot just because i don’t refer to the a’s as “we” or “us”. if you don’t want to be a fan this year, don’t be a fan in 2 years when the a’s take the division.

to answer some questions:

-huston street would and will be on another roster, and frequently throws “over 82 mph”
-jack cust would absolutely be on another roster, he represents an upgrade at DH for more than a few teams, the mariners come to mind as one of them
-brooks conrad has played in three games. if he goes 0 for 30 with 25 strikeouts…then yeah, maybe send him down.

sure, it’s frustrating, but this was never a year to go for it. our team just isn’t good enough. our good hitters are in AA right now. when they get here, you will like what you see.

I hope you're right about "our" good hitters . . .

but I have just lost faith in Beane and the A’s staff ability to identify and develop good hitters. They have shown over the past few years that they are just failing at this. Great at identifying and developing pitchers; lousy at identifying and developing hitters.

Good hitting prospects in A’s minors ≠ Good major league hitters ( see Crosby, Barton, Buck, Herrera etc.)

Where's our Hanley?

My sentiments exactly, Foolish. The A’s in their current state are basically not worth my time. I cannot justify spending my time or money to watch them anymore. My 9 year-old thinks they are boring.

I’m not so displeased with the rebuilding, but to claim that he’s rebuilding but not conceding is a bunch of crap. And Beane’s deals look like straight salary dumps to me. Harden/Gaudin should have brought back a stud hitter, just like when Florida had its fire sale and got Anibel Sanchez and Hanley Ramirez for Beckett. Vitters, Rasmus or someone of that ilk should have been the price, period. At least some dynamic, interesting young players would have kept my interest in the team.

As they are now, there really isn’t anyone who compels me to come watch. Even the young pitchers seem to have performed over their heads and are coming back to earth. Other than Ellis, Duke (who will be gone soon) and maybe Suzuki, I can’t name a player that a quality team would even want.

Beane has done a reasonably good job at putting an average team on the field that wins more often than not, but that’s not his only job. Baseball is entertainment, and he has failed at putting interesting, compelling teams on the field for several years now. MLB, Selig, Wolff all say that Oakland needs a new stadium, but the stadium doesn’t bother me at all. I want some interesting baseball. Even the Giants, with their young pitchers and speed, have become more interesting than the A’s. OBP is boring and strikeouts are boring. I want to see the ball move around. I want to see guys running the bases, laying out in the outfield for balls hit in the gaps. I want to see Rich Harden dazzle me with his stuff. From a pure basbeall standpoint, I can’t think of a more boring team in the game right now, and no stadium can fix that.

If you find intelligent baseball to be boring

I’d (honestly) suggest finding another sport.

It ain’t going away.

(BTW, when the Marlins got him Hanley Ramirez was just coming off a AA campaign in which he posted a whopping .720 OPS. I’m willing to guess most of their (five) fans weren’t too pleased about him as the “centerpiece” of the trade.)

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on Jul 24, 2008 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

On the contrary

Ramirez was one of the most prized prospects in baseball, and Sanchez was too. The fact that Ramirez wasn’t setting the minors on fire that year was probably the only thing that kept from being untouchable, which he had been previously.

I find exciting baseball to be entertaining, and just because you have discovered sabermetrics doesn’t mean you can change what entertains fans. VORP and other stat columns don’t really entertain me, but that doesn’t preclude me from being a baseball fan. I’d like my team to win games, but that’s not the only factor I consider in judging what i consider and good or entertaining game.

As far as suggesting another sport, who are you to judge? Do you think you know more than the next guy because you spew stats? Why do you think your suggestion is even relevant? Do you think that more “intelligent” baseball is better baseball? Do you think that the majority of owners ultimate goal is to win World Series, or maximize profit?

by iceplant on Jul 24, 2008 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

sorry

the general sentiment was that hanley was…maybe not “busting” as a prospect, but was definitely more underwhelming than originally thought. then people found out he was bored in the minors or something.

who knows.

"It's not my fault your team's so shitty." -Steve Friend, head coach, Chabot College, to Laney College's head coach, who asked why we scored so many runs after we beat Laney 30-3 in 2006

Intelligent baseball is better baseball

Because a well run team wins more often. Winning is not boring.

A GM who uses stats to evaluate players is absolutely going to have an advantage over those that don’t. Do you think mutual fund companies just go with their overall feeling about a stock when they make decisions? No, that would be crazy; any good evaluator will use all information at his or her disposal. The point is that by using sabermetrics and combining it with solid scouting, you can run your baseball team like a business, and that’s what “Moneyball” is all about. Informed decisions lead to better results.

As a fan, you don’t have to like stats, but you should at least understand how they explain why certain teams do better than others year after year. And yes, if you are ignorant when it comes to statistical analysis, it does limit your credibility when it comes to commenting on what makes a successful baseball team unless you have something else to bring to the table.

Perhaps you have excellent scouting knowledge instead, which is also valuable. But I don’t see how ripping on statistics helps you get your point across. If you are a fan of baseball, that’s great. Just don’t dismiss others viewpoints unless you have something to add that has some useful information.

I don’t understand strikeouts being so horrible. Would you say Texas is a bad offensive team? I think not. They just happen to be second in the AL in strikeouts, only 8 fewer than us all year. The team that strikes out the fewest? Seattle, dead last in the AL in runs scored. Statistics would tell you that in most cases, strikeouts are mostly irrelevant to a team’s offensive success.

I also don’t understand your point about the Giants being more exciting than the A’s. They sure don’t win as much. I don’t understand how you can say that the Giants are exciting because of their young pitching, but dismiss Oakland’s stellar young pitching so far this year.

And where has the Giants’ speed got them? They are 3rd to last in offense in the NL, just as the A’s are 3rd to last in the AL in runs scored. If the A’s had power hitters, you’d be changing your tune when it comes to speed and how unimportant OBP is to scoring runs. In fact, the only reason we are scoring any runs at all this year is because we aren’t last in OBP.

To sum this up, winning is everything.

by baseb3383 on Jul 24, 2008 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ah, but if you assume winning

I’d rather win with a team of Rickey Hendersons and Tim Lincecums than a team of Jack Custs and Greg Smiths. It’s certainly more exciting that way.

Of course, if the Custs/Smiths are going to win more games then never mind (of course you’re right that winning is everything) but what if I want more than just a 100 win team. What if I deserve more than just a 100 win team?

What the hell is your problem?

Show me where I “judged”. Show me where I “think I know more than the next guy”. Your rudeness is both totally uncalled for and way out of line.

I think A’s style baseball has come to stay. The success of the Red Sox, Yankees, Indians, etc is not a coincidence. If you find that boring, you may want to find some other form of entertainment, because you may not enjoy watching baseball as much as you used to. That is all I said. That is also all I meant. Any intimations that I’m “judging” you are strictly the products of your own deranged imagination.

I couldn’t care less what you do with your time. I offered a piece of advice. You can take it or leave it. Abusing me for offering it might make you feel good, but only if you are a jerk.

How would you expect to get a stud hitter for a pitcher as injury prone as Harden?

It’s not like the guy’s been the picture of health. If he was there’s no way the A’s don’t get more for him.

You may be right

but maybe not. I think Beane got cold feet on Harden because he had two shaky starts in a row, although he didn’t give up much in either of them. True about Harden’s health, but he’s one of the 5 best pitchers in baseball, and everyone knows that. Beane sold early because of his injury fears, not because his hand was forced. From an interview I heard with David Forst, he said that Chicago was just relentless in their pursuit, and they were bent on getting Harden. But if Harden had been in Oakland to put in the two starts he has already had with Chicago, I’m guessing Beane would be holding out for Rasmus, Vitters or some stud from Tampa today, while the deadline would be looming large. Don’t you think?

by iceplant on Jul 24, 2008 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure who we'd have gotten

But hard to argue that he wouldn’t have been more valuable with the deadline looming, Milwaukee charging, and Harden himself dealing the way he has.

It’s safe to assume Beane would have been able to up the ante, though I like what he got from the Cubs based on watching Gallagher pitch twice and based on the way the other guys are playing in the minors.

Kurt Suzuki in the clutch. Greg Smith’s pickoff move. Carlos Gonzalez’s arm. Cust’s power. Mark Ellis, on defense and sometimes at the plate. Justin Duchscherer. Bob Geren finally showing some emotion in his second season as manager. Those few times when Bobby Crosby proves us wrong (hey – I really WANT to like the guy). Huston’s tongue. Frank Thomas (when healthy). Rajai Davis pinch-running for Cust. Brad Ziegler. Ryan Sweeney at the plate.

...just to name a few. I, too, am not super excited about the 2008 A’s, even though they were in the race for quite a while, and they still have a winning record; they just are not all that entertaining, and not all that good either. In my heart of heart, I know it was wise to get prospects for Harden, even though we were still in the race, because I knew there was no way the A’s would get to the post-season this year.

But the A’s are still my team, dammit. And these are the things I love about them.

I still love this team

and I’m already digging CarGone and Sweeney – 2 OF studs of the future but right now, this team doesn’t excite me, at all. There’s no one that gets my attention. No Swisher with the hair, no dances in the dugout after a HR, no red head clown pics to comment on… I guess this new group will develop their own identity next year. Until then, it’s a boring team to watch play.

It was over before it started

The A’s raised the white flag on the 2008 season when they signed Emil Brown. If that didn’t make it clear enough, the signing of Mike Sweeney should have.

I don’t see any reason to hate this team. I can see where one might hate the way the season has turned out after a solid start but that’s different.

Root for the Giants? Not even if they're playing al-Qaeda!

I don't hate the A's... I'll always love the Green and Gold...

but, I hate THIS team! I might actually like this team, even this year, after the trade deadline and a few DFA’s… when guys like Embree, Street, Brown, and Hannahan are gone. Maybe September call-ups will be fun this year. Normally, you don’t get to see many but the most “ready” players called up in September. This year, the entire Rivercat team already plays for the A’s, so maybe we’ll be treated to guys like Gio, Cahill, Anderson, Guzman, and Doolittle in September. At least, that’d be fun.

And, actually, I’d welcome seeing Thomas and Mike Sweeney back on the field (maybe even Chavez, too, if he’s not toast) in August. Hell, maybe they’ll go on a run and make the September call-ups (and us) have something to hope for. Had those guys stayed healthy all year, I may not have become a hater.

in response to my little rant. (No offense to the regs… I know who you are.) Perhaps, I should be the Ray Ratto of the site. LOL
