Brad Ziegler goes into the AL record books (w/ links)
For those of you who weren't following the gameday thread or able to catch the game, here is some news:
Tonight, Brad Ziegler set a new American League record for consecutive scoreless innings to start a career, passing Boston's Dave Ferriss (1945) with an inning pitched against Tampa Bay. That puts him at 22 2/3 innings, 22 being the previous mark.
During the broadcast, it was mentioned that George McQuillan of the Philadelphia Phillies has the National League (and subsequently, Major League) record of 25 innings to begin his career, set way back in 1907. Small world, considering it was the Phillies who let Ziegler go from their minor league system a few years ago.
For someone who has worked as long and as hard as Ziegler has to get to the Major Leagues after being told he was too old and not good enough for the Phillies, to being hit by a line drive in the head in High-A, to being asked to change his entire pitching style, to getting hit in the head a second time this past offseason, to make it to the highest level and set a record like this? It may be an obscure one but now he's probably going to have something in the Hall of Fame. I think that's pretty amazing.
Added: Some news-related links:
From Joe Stiglich:
"Honestly, when I'm out there I wasn't thinking about (the record)," Ziegler said. "When I tied (the AL mark) and they stopped and asked me to throw the ball in, that's when I realized it."
Ziegler did some research on Boo (real name David) Ferriss once he heard his name come up "to see what kind of guy he was."
Ferriss had a 65-30 record in six seasons with Boston.
"It seems like he had a decent career," Ziegler said.
From Susan Slusser:
Ziegler said he thought Peña's ball was out initially and, he said, "I tell you, it wasn't a good pitch. ... He got a lot of it, but thankfully he was a little late."
...
"It's exciting to be at the top of a league record two months into my career," Ziegler said. "It's pretty crazy. But it's a tribute to the team. I rely on my defense; I don't strike guys out."
Ziegler is closing in on the A's longest scoreless streak by a relief pitcher, Rick Honeycutt's 24 1/3 innings, June 25-Sept. 14, 1995.
After Ziegler matched Ferriss' mark, the ball was thrown into the dugout as a keepsake.
From Mychael Urban:
The A's have come to almost expect great pitching and defense, but few expected this from Ziegler. The sidearmer with near-criminal sink and command tied the AL record of 22 set by Boston's Boo Ferriss in 1945 when he retired Gabe Gross on a ground ball to start the seventh inning.
"I think for the most part he locates really well," Gross said. "He doesn't do a whole lot besides come right at you. You would think that would uncomplicate things, but he comes at you, tries to keep the ball down from that angle. When he's keeping the ball down, it's hard to do anything but beat the ball in the dirt."
...
Poor pitches are a rarity for Ziegler, said Braden. The two were teammates at Triple-A Sacramento earlier this year.
"He's been unreal the entire year," Braden gushed. "He was our go-to guy in Triple-A, and he's our go-to guy here now. Just lights-out all year long."

From a Rays Fan watching today's game.....
Congrats to Brad Ziegler. All I can say is WOW! Only thing I can’t figure out is what took him so long? Any time Beane wants to get rid of another great arm, tell him to call Andrew Friedman and I’m sure we’ll be more than happy to take him off your hands! Good thing we only see you guys for one more series….of course unless we see you in October! Good luck!

He's had a long path to get here
- he was let go by the Phillies organization a few years ago because they didn’t think he could make it and he was too old to be at such a low level (Low-A Batavia at the time)
- he was brought in by the A’s after a brief stint in the Independent League and pitched effectively as a starter, then he was approached with the idea of converting to a sidearm/submarine style before the start of the 2007 season and becoming a relief pitcher
- he has had two separate skull fractures from being hit in the head with a baseball. One was off the bat of Fred Lewis in the minors a few years ago while the other came in an accident in the off-season after a youth camp session (he was getting some throwing in and one of the kids that was talking to him reached in front of him for the ball, which deflected off the kid’s glove and hit him in the forehead)
- this season, he’s allowed a combined 1 earned run in over 45 innings pitched in both Triple-A and the Majors
What makes this even more special for a lot of us is Brad has been keeping a diary here for the past two seasons. His diaries can be found here and if you go all the way to the first one and follow along, you can see how many questions he’s answered here as A’s fans followed his efforts to make it to the Majors.
For him to finally do it AND do what he’s doing now, I honestly couldn’t think of a more deserving person.

By the way, here's hoping the Rays can hold on and win the AL East
Great story so far and it’s nice to see them finally doing something good.

I'm all for the Rays representing the AL in the Fall Classic if we can't make it.
Especially when you guys have the makings of what we want to become.

AL East?
That was a classy message. From the AL East, that’s unusual. OK, from two teams in the AL East…. :)

Seriously.. Baseball Tonight can officially go to hell..
Not one mention of Ziggy’s record during the recap of tonight’s game.
Honestly, had any Sox or Yankees player done this it would be mentioned 500 times per minute.

That bothered me a great deal
The question is : Do you think Ravich and the BBT crew never got word of the record? Or do you think they did and decided not to mention it because no one really cared?

Amazing, just amazing
When was the last time he even allowed an inherited runner to score?
He’s now pitched in 21 games and has a positive WPA in 20 of them.

I don't think they've used him a whole lot in the middle of an inning since his first few...
...appearances. He did get that one-pitch outing in the Angels series but I seem to recall most of his outings lately have been to start an inning off.

He did draw an inning ending double play versus the Mariners two weeks ago
With the A’s up 4-3, he came into a 1-out bases-loaded jam in the sixth and immediately induced a double-play ball from Jose Lopez.
I was listening on the radio and was pretty psyched about that. A’s won by the same score.

Ziegler made Rotoworld
With two more scoreless innings on Tuesday, Brad Ziegler broke the AL record for consecutive scoreless innings to start a career.
Ziegler is up to 23 2/3 innings. He passed Boo Farris, who established the AL record of 22 innings in 1945. George McCullen has the longest streak since 1900, throwing 25 scoreless innings in 1907.

Dave "Boo" Ferriss
was a heck of a pitcher for the Red Sox in the mid ‘40’s. If Tommy John surgery had existed back then, he likely would have had a long and fruitful career.

what if he got the surgery, came back, but was never the same—pitched 5 more poor to terrible years before hanging ‘em up.
Just riffing here, haven’t considered the numbers—but I doubt he’s a sure fire HOFer at that point.
