Are the AN ads considered CGVs?
Just saw this ad by the "Bright Future for the A's" fan post, with a picture of Obama:
"Is it OK to Meet with Anti-American Foreign Leaders who hate small children and kick kittens for sport?"
Paid for by some guy who is not Obama.
Anyhow, I'm pretty sure if somebody posted this, they'd be flagged. Since I can't flag an ad, I'm posting this. Feel free to delete it if the issue gets resolved.
EDIT: and if you read the CGV page, you'll note that "AN does accept political advertising as long as it is not offensive in any way, shape or form, but we subscribe to the belief that advertising and editorial are separate."
If it's not editorializing, this ad is pretty on the verge.

Just for irony's sake, I'm including a screenshot of this ad,
as it appears on the AN CGV guideline page:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/curbludgeon/2693619804/sizes/o/
The picture doesn't include the quoted language about kittens and children . . .
but to be fair and consistent with the CGV guidleines, such poliitical ads should probably be banned IMO. I don’t think SBN lives and dies because of such political ads and can probably do away with them. But ultimately that’s Blez’ call.

This has been discussed here ad nauseum.
The qualification you added wrt advertising and editorial is the best you’re going to get. That said, that particular ad is highly irritating.

I want to see an ad with a politician ghostriding the motorcade.

I'm using firefox and I see them
so apparently I don’t have those…
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
plus is better in my opinion and should be standard
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
it even blocks ads in hulu… or used to
You don't really need any addons with firefox to block adds
I’m using Firefox, and I’ve pretty much NEVER seen any adds on the SBnation sites.
For most ads, to block them on Firefox is very simple: right click on the offending ad. Now, select the option to block images from that server. Goodbye ad.
Most ads, on most sites, come from servers that are different from the site’s server. So, you won’t affect your enjoyment of the site by doing this. Typically, the ad servers, will have the word “ad” in their name.
And since many of these ad servers are the same, once you have built up a list of blocked ad servers, you won’t see ads on many sites.

I get more annoyed with the Yankees ads
I can ignore the politics ones….but dude, trying to sell me a Yankees ringtone on an A’s website? Nu uh….
There's no crying in baseball!
That's because rooting for the Yankees is actually
worse than talking to Anti-American foreign leaders.

Would I want to??

CGV doesn't apply to ads
Blez has made that perfectly clear.
I agree the political ads are annoying. Several other ads are annoying, too. That’s kind of the nature of ads.

The Angels are also annoying - can we get of them too?
Please?

The adds are good old fashioned capitalism
at work. I have no problem with them and don’t blame Blez a bit for making a shekel or two. I personally find Obama slightly more/slightly less offensive than McCain based on how I’m feeling that particular day.
I think you would be doing yourself a favor if you accept that the CGV’s are there to govern conduct between posters. Nothing more. This is a great site, and like anything else it costs money to provide. It hasn’t cost me a dime, and I’m very happy with that arrangement.

it would be good old fashioned communism.

that particular ad...

Strange how we never see any anti-McCain ads….just the anti-Obama crap…just sayin’.

You should see how much Cindi McCain
paid Blez not to run any anti-McCain ads. Cindi McCain – the other Cindi!!!!!

I know the stated policy on AN is that ads are not part of the content.
Quite honestly, I find that position laughable. Not only does it justify doing anything to turn a buck (hey, I’m a Nazi prison guard, but it’s just my day job…) without taking any responsibility for it, it indicates a total lack of understanding of the way the human mind works. Believe me, people see that ad and they associate “AN= right wing”, not consciously perhaps, but subconsciously.
If you run a site, you are responsible for the content on that site. All of it. People see all of it (unless they block the ads, of course) and the human mind does not have a separate little bin in which it puts paid advertisements every time it looks at an image.
I’m aware that I am not likely to change the site policy, but that’s my opinion on the issue.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
I'm also concerned that people will come in here and think we're all Red Sox fans...
...rushing to some website to buy Sox gear.
I guess if that company wants to pay for an ad that shows up here where people are unlikely to patronize them, it’s their money.
Personally, I don’t care for seeing the political ads but if someone wants to interpret a pro-McCain ad to say AN is a right wing site, that’s their issue.

not only that, but, a la advertising Sox/Yankees crap here ...
... that very same McCain ad shows up on several prominent lefty blogs.

Most people have developed enough maturity and savvy
to be able to differentiate between ads and articles. I disagree with you and that is not the way the human mind works. We are all exposed to the world around us. We will see many different Ad campaigns in the coming months. It’s insulting for you to think that people don’t know the difference between a paid ad and an editorial. I have faith in the readership here. They can tell the difference. If they can’t, they should be able to . Then it becomes their problem not ANs.
I suppose you would characterize
a study that shows people subconsciously preferring their own race as “insulting,” too.
Insulting or otherwise, it’s reality. Images that are associated with each other locationally are also associated with each other topically. Advertisement has very little to do with rational thought processes, because most of the time when people think rationally about a product, service, candidate, etc. they don’t buy it.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
I think you're way off here.
Bottom line = these are ads and most people have been exposed to this stuff since birth. This is an election year and advertising is allowed. It doesn’t mean that the site endorses every candidate that advertises. I don’t mean to be rude to you at all… I just think that your post is way off the mark.
What has a study that shows people subsconsciously preferring their own
race, got to do with ads running on an internet website?
How about referencing any study that shows how people respond to ads on the internet?
ZIPS: Milledge: 466 HR, 485 2B, 2282 hits, 278-379-524
I think most results to a study like that would be...
...”I mostly ignore them.”

this thread reminds me of a scene from my favorite simpsons episode...
It must be the first of the month: new billboard day!
“This year, give her English muffins.” Whatever you say, Mr. Billboard!
“Best in the West.” Heh heh heh, that rhymes!
“Clown college”? You can’t eat that!
Well, I got everything I was supposed to get. I’m not going to enroll in that clown
college, though… that advertisement had absolutely no effect on me whatsoever.
A's v Giants "is kind of like the difference between going to see the Ramones and going to see the Bee Gees. A's fans will go see the Ramones." -BB 07/27/05
It's related because they both involve associations
based on subliminal signals that are not rationally articulated (and that if they were rationally articulated would probably be rejected).
Unfortunately I’m not aware of any studies on internet advertising… although they probably exist, I don’t subscribe to the right journals (or any journals, actually).
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
I don't believe at all
in subliminal send me a goat advertising and would never dram of impressionable sheep resorting to it myself.
