The All Purpose, All In One Trade and Rosterbation thread

With so many trade threads floating around, with three threads per new rumor, and five hundred for each trade, I thought I would take a leaf out of Viva El Birdos and go with a single Trade Rumor and Discussion thread to keep track of all the potential roster moves our Athletics might make with out having a new thread for each one.

Here are our primary trade candidates, and rumors thus far about them. I'll expect AN to fill in the rest when the next wave of rumors come in.

RHP Huston Street - Closer
Rumored Teams Interested: White Sox, Mets, Brewers, Dodgers, Devil Rays, Reds.
Street's value is in flux right now. After a string of good outings, Street's blown three saves in a row and there are concerns, at least on AN, that he might be hiding another injury. The Brewers sent their special assistant to the GM to scout Street, and instead of a clean save over the Yankees, he saw Street not only get bailed out of getting a loss by a baserunner tripping over his own feet, but saw Street give up a series of hits, blow the save, and send the game into extra innings. The Brewers in turn said they were not interested in Street any longer. The Devil Rays have been rumored for Street for a while now, being linked to a possible Huston Street and Matt Murton package, but no news has come from that angle in a while. The Dodgers are looking for relief help after losing their closer, though Broxton can probably fill in for them. The Dodgers probably have the prospects the A's (or at least AN) covets most; Andy LaRoche and Ivan De Jesus to name a couple. The Mets have also been rumored by Ken Rosenthal.

RHP Justin Duchscherer - Starter
No rumored teams in specific, though you can probably say that just about every team in need of pitching would be interested in the MLB ERA Leader. The number of teams that he could be dealt with is too long to even speculate a list on, though the Cardinals are the last of the 3 NL Central teams vying for the title that have not made a huge pitching deal, 4 if you count the Reds and the Volquez/Hamilton deal.

LHP Alan Embree - Relief Pitcher
Veteran relievers are apparently in demand right now, so again, Embree could be linked to any number of relief hungry teams, most likely the White Sox I would say. No idea on his worth though, and he might be destined to be a throw in for a bigger trade.

RHP Keith Foulke - Relief Pitcher
See Alan Embree, though Foulke's injury history probably makes his value much less than Embree. Then again, he's also making almost nothing.

RH Mark Ellis - Second Base
Ellis is average offensively, and awesome defensively. But who exactly needs Ellis? The Rockies probably arn't interested anymore. The Dodgers? The best bet is probably the Cardinals. Perhaps a huge blockbuster for Rasmus isn't that far fetched after all? Ken Rosenthal thinks that Ellis would be a good for the Cardinals, but thinks that the A's want to extend Ellis and keep him, despite the recent acquisitions of Eric Patterson, Jamile Weeks and Adrian Cardenas.

RH Bobby Crosby - Short Stop
AN has been disenfranchised with Crosby for quite some time now, and even though Crosby's offensive numbers do not look quite as bad these days, it is only for a combination of two things; 1) the A's offense sucks that much and 2) Short Stops, AL in particular, are no longer hitting like the SS's of old. Tejada is in the NL, Jeter's gone a sucking, ARod is at 3B for some reason, and Garciaparra is a cripple. The Dodgers are in need of a shortstop, as are the Cardinals.

RH Emil Brown - Outfield
Could be picked up by a team in search for a warm body. Or a team with an extra body bag that they feel would go to waste if they just threw it out.

SH Rob Bowen - Catcher
Simply because Catchers are always in demand. The Yankees just lost Posada to the DL, and could be in the market, and we sure as hell are not using Bowen much.

RH Matt Murton - Outfield
Rumored with Street with the Devil Rays, there hasn't been much coming from Murton these days, be it rumors or offense. Perhaps they are connected? I still believe he is as likely to be a throw-in in a deal with the A's as he was with the Rich Harden trade.

Scorecard:
Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin to CHC for Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson, Matt Murton and Sean Donaldson.

Joe Blanton to PHI for Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman, Matt Spencer.

Mark Kosay to ATL for Joey Devine, Jamie Richmond.

Nick Swisher to CWS for Gio Gonzalez, Ryan Sweeney, Fautino De Los Santos.

Dan Haren and Conor Robertson to ARZ for Brett Anderson, Carlos Gonzalez, Chris Carter, Aaron Cunningham, Dana Eveland, Greg Smith.

Marco Scutaro to TOR for Graham Godfrey, Kristian Bell.

Hoping for more trades

I very much hope we’re looking to make more deals, but I don’t know if anyone has a sure ticket out of town. For some reason, Beane seems to want to keep Street around, even though he’s basically a young, team-controlled version of Billy Koch. Every time he comes out I have to cross my fingers. Ellis seems like a Beane favorite, most likely for his defense. He’s walking a buttload, but is having major issues hitting the ball this year. That said, the defense factor probably keeps him around…he’s a big part of our league-leading defense this year. I could see Embree heading to whoever doesn’t get Fuentes for a minor prospect, but besides that I really don’t see Beane making any more moves (which is disappointing). I would love to see Street on his way elsewhere, and I wouldn’t mind Ellis being traded if we were getting a very good return for him. Here’s hoping we can convince someone to give us a good left-side infield prospect and pitcher for Street.

White Sox

I think they’re looking for right handed relievers, so I doubt they’d be keen on Embree.

sf giants type trades

for foulke, brown and bowen i would pull a giants style trade and deal those guys for lower-level and alledgedly low-ceiling prospects. doesn’t look like we’re going anywhere this year so we might as well get something for these guys. who knows, maybe one of the “low-ceiling” prospects turns into something…

I'll ask this again here, maybe its a better place

Since we have had a little recent success pulling "AAAA" out of the minors (see: Jack Cust), what about taking a flyer on Andy Marte? Yes, he hasn’t been so great in 300+ at bats in the majors, but his minor league numbers aren’t bad, and he does fill a position of need. Plus, the fact that his MLB record isn’t that good means he’s cheap, but 300 at bats isn’t enough to really judge him. Plus, he’s still only 24, so it’s not like he’s all that old…

Street to LA
Corsby to LA

LaRoche to Oak
De Jesus to Oak

Trade them all!

After losing our last 6, falling into 3rd place and being 9 games out of 1st and 6 games out of the wildcard (I apologize for putting salt in that wound), I personally don’t see much hope for the rest of this season. I personally want to play all the young guys and see how they respond in the majors. Also, hopefully a guy like Buck can pull out of his MASSIVE slump if we give him consistent playing time.

I would hate to see guys like Street (who is still young and I would keep-but I think we can get the most back for him), Duke, and Ellis go-there is not a better time to trade them. The more prospects we get—the better chance we have of some turning into something…

Rotoworld says:
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Dodgers are interested in Huston Street following Takashi Saito’s injury.
The newspaper notes that the Dodgers have been scouting the A’s recently and may also be interested in Bobby Crosby as a replacement for Rafael Furcal. Along with news that Los Angeles may be showcasing Andy LaRoche for a trade, it sounds like something could be in the works.

Rasmus, Garcia, Reyes, Duncan, and Anderson to A’s

Jack Wilson, Foulke to LAD

Josh Fields?

___
From today’s Chicago Sun-Times:
“A source has indicated the Sox have been in discussions with ’’more than one’’ team about adding pitching help, either in the rotation or bullpen - or possibly both - and the major discussion is whether they dare part ways with minor-league third baseman Josh Fields. According to the source, unless they are willing to part ways with Fields, there is no deal to be made. Basically, do they forfeit the future at third base to chase October glory this season?”
____
Given their history, it’s safe to assume that at least the lines of communication between Beane and Williams are wide open. Fields would seem an ideal addition at this point for the A’s. A right-handed power bat that’s a natural 3B but with the athleticism to potentially play LF at this stage of his career.

With Pale Hose closer Bobby Jenks just returning from a DL stint, I would think a lot would depend on how his back responds over the next week, but a combo involving Street and Fields seems like at least a possibility. This is pure speculation and rosterbation, but I doubt that Street alone would fetch Fields, who despite struggling both with injuries and at the plate this year, has shown the ability to hit for significant power at the ML level and would be under team control for several more years than Street.

Anyway, just thought I’d float that out there, since Fields seems like an ideal potential addition.

Fields's numbers don't look all that impressive

25 years old in AAA
24 BB – 74 K
24 XBH – 74 K
.788 OPS – .748 Team OPS

He was pretty good with the Sox last year, but he doesn’t seem to have improved.

Jack Egbert seems like Beane’s kinda guy though.

by WaddellCanseco on Jul 22, 2008 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also...

He was maybe “pretty good” last year, but “decent” is a better description. 101 OPS+, his defense is apparently below average. So, last year he was worse than…. Hannahan. But Hannahan sucks and is having a terrible year this year with an OPS+ of 82 (.225/.318/.337). But wait, Fields’s MLE for Oakland this year is .204/.267/.361, again worse than Hannahan. Now, I’d rather have Fields than Hannahan, probably, but the point is I wouldn’t give up jack shit for Fields.

Street's value rises as other closers go down

It seems that many of the contending teams’ closers are injured, experiencing discomfort, or not pitching particularly well. The market for Street is heating up because the number of buyers for a closer is increasing (see Saito and Wagner from yesterday). If the Rays hang around and Percival can’t return to form, that’s another team that would need to make a move.

During the Cards/Brewers game on ESPN last night, I was cheering for the Cards to score off Torres, which happened. Based on the Brewers trade for Sabathia, they can’t sit back and feel comfortable that Torres is their answer.

Hopefully the injury stars align for the A’s instead of against them.

While we are at it,

this re-loading (snerk) / re-building phase…why don’t we just blow the team up and trade all vets who at least have value. There is no sense deluding fans that we can still contend this season anyway. Team morale is low. Fan spirits are low. Suggest we keep up with the house cleaning so when we see the team struggle with the neophytes, it’d be okay and understandable. I hate it when front-office takes this I’m half in (contending), and I’m half out (trading away the better players) approach. Cut it and dice it swiftly, as they would say.

There are only five more left - Ellis, Duchscherer, and Street - plus I’m pretending Crosby and Embree have value. It’s only been 7 months. How much faster can they be expected to go?

Of course they’ll never give up hope in a season. Heck I have hope for this season, because when you trade someone, you get someone back who might help you— see Carlos, Sweeney, Eveland and Smith, with Gio hopefully on the way.

to me than Ellis to the Cardinals, given Kent’s suckiness and Kennedy’s 2009 contract. Also Aaron Miles seems to be channeling postseason Tom Lawless now.

The Mets might also be a contender given Castillo’s…er…struggles.

On the Street front
Dan ( Boston): HEY BUSTER!!! How about taking a Red Sox question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Huston Street rumors are floating around boston, but do we really want to trade with Beane- seems like everyone who does loses, is Bowden gonna be part of any deal- or will someone take Delcarmen or Hansen off our hands? Thanks Buster!! Buster Olney: (1:30 PM ET ) Dan: Street scared a lot of evaluators last Saturday with his outing in Yankee Stadium—diminished velocity, lowered arm angle, and that will make it tough for him against lefties. It’ll be interesting to see if somebody gets aggressive and overlooks his recent outings, or if Oakland decides to hang onto him and put him out on the market this winter, which they are very comfortable doing…

PECOTA sees Petit as a .223 EqA (50%) vs Hu at .253 (50%) for 2008

Petit is projected in the .230’s and .240’s during the next 7 years, while Hu is between .254 and .261. Of course all this is before this season and assuming Hu didn’t need an ophthalmologist. I like free PECOTA.

Interesting discussion...

at minor league ball about the A’s minor league prosepects and how they compare to other organizations

of that group could be elite MLBr’s?? Well lets start out by asking who behind Price the Rays have that YOU think can be and elite MLB’r?? It all depends on what you consider elite. I think Price is the best prospect out of either organization, but behind that i’ll take the A’s system. More depth, and more consistency. IMO any of Cahill/Gio/Anderson/Simmons/Mazzaro could be future all-stars. And yes, we will mention Inoa because he’s legit. He could be pitching in the big leagues by the time he is 19-20, and many scouts say that at 16, he would have went in the top 5 in this years draft. The A’s have more pitching then that worth noting, but I am short on time. Doolittle/Cardenas/Carter/Cunningham and more have the potential to be above average MLB hitters, and Beane likely isn’t even done trading yet.

Wood looks like a total bust, Adenhart might end up back in AA by next season—I mean, their best prospects at this point are an injury-prone catcher (Conger), a 4th starter (Green) and a speedy outfielder with mediocre plate discipline and power (Bourjos). This was on the ESPN board about Dodgers and Crosby

According to Buster Olney, the Dodgers are “engaged in serious discussions to acquire veteran shortstop Bobby Crosby of the Oakland A’s.” Olney notes that the Dodger have been looking for infield help for the past several weeks and a trade for Crosby could happen soon. It seems that Colletti’s Dodgers are playing for 2008, tied for the NL West lead. Crosby is signed through the 2009 season at $5 million. by PaulThomas on Jul 22, 2008 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Crosby is not atrocious defender

Look at Crosby’s RZR the last four years prior to ‘08. He is a good defensive shortstop. He’s not having a good defensive year. That’s because – wait for it – he hasn’t played baseball regularly for a few years! Defense numbers have fluctuations from year-to-year just like offensive numbers do, especially for injured players who haven’t gotten regular repetitions. People who have been playing and studying baseball their whole lives understand this intuitively.

I really don’t understand the irrational dislike of him. Look around the league at worst 10 shortstops. The idea that Crosby could “pass through waivers”, or that the Dodgers are foolish for being interested, is lunacy.

Hu is a sub-.500 OPS player. Crosby is a ~.700 OPS player in the AL, and he’ll be a ~.760 OPS player in the NL.

No way is there a 60-point gap in OPS between the NL and AL

That’s plain lunacy.

Meanwhile, the projections for his offensive talent entering the season were well below what he’s done so far (in rate stat terms). If he’s regressing anywhere, it’s downward.

As for the defense, if you think the stats are lying, you evidently haven’t watched him much this season. His range is seemingly worse by the day and his throws to first are cover-your-eyes horrible.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

I don't think he's a "good" defensive SS

He’s not as bad as PT says by any means. This year seems like an outlier, and he looks fine to me. On the other hand, the “he hasn’t played baseball regularly” thing is just bs. Sure he has. He played a lot of healthy baseball last year, and half a season of healthy baseball this year. If he takes so long to get into a groove defensively, then he really does suck. The best guess is that he’s an average-to-mildly-below-average SS. Your link doesn’t even show anything different except that he was excellent in 04 and 05. That was awhile ago!

Also: I’ll eat my hat if he puts up a full season of .760 OPS in the NL. He’d put up better numbers with the Dodgers, to be sure, but not that good.

Not really

I’m not putting too much emphasis on this season. Nate Silver and most people who does prospect projections put too much weight into last season when evaluating Hu. They didn’t put enough weight into the fact that Hu was terrible at the plate in ‘06, and wasn’t a very good hitter prior to that, either. PECOTA is a tool, it isn’t sacrosanct. IMO it gives too much weight a prospect’s most recent season.

Hu is hitting terribly now, he hit terribly in ‘06. There is some strong reason to believe he will not become a passable starting shortstop as a hitter. Crosby carries no such concerns.

I never wrote that the AL is 60 OPS points better than the NL. Please, as a rule of thumb, don’t attribute Paul’s words to me. Look closely at what I wrote again.

It might be “nice if I explained my contention” – but nice for whom? I have a feeling it would be met with more sarcasm . Plus, I wrote 5,000 words on it already here at the end of interleague.

1. I’d roughly estimate the difference between the leagues alone at 45-50 points of OPS in favor of the AL right now. I’m gathering that that figure is higher than you think it should be. We can’t really settle that one because we can’t make a perfect comparison, whether we use interleague play, head-to-head matchups, players who switched leagues, etc. But I would be very curious what figure you’d use.

I’d account for the last 10-15 points of projected growth beyond the “average” (again, I think we have to use that term loosely) as follows:

2. A personal belief, admittedly supported by anecdotes, that the AL is hardest on guys who don’t control the strike zone well – players like Crosby who strikeout out twice as much as they walk or more. If the AL is harder on players of his profile, he would benefit more than the average player who makes the jump.
3. He’s making the jump during the theoretical (age) peak of his career. The “average” OPS jump from AL to NL would have to be weighted for age to account for the typical AL to NL jumper, who is “one year older in a bad way” (in the twilight of his career).
4. He needs a fresh start and will probably benefit from one, he’s about to start playing for his next contract for the first time in years, he’ll be moving from comparatively small and apathetic home crowd to a packed house every night and playing in a pennant race which might help his focus, and he goes from hanging out with a team full of 23-year-old kids to a team that’s older and perhaps more professional and serious day-to-day.

Now, if you can make the small leap that those factors can and will help his performance, then #4 basically reads: He’d be entering an environment (STL) tailor-made for him to succeed. And the “average hitter moving to the NL” that we’re disputing includes a large of group of players who are entering less-than-ideal situations unlike the one I just described; situations that affect their play negatively, which of course affects the overall average of the entire group.

On the basis of that I feel confident projecting slightly better-than-average uptick in offensive performance from Croz if he were to shift to STL.

where'd you get STL as a destination?

I mean, I know it’s not out of the question … but this thread was specifically about Cros to the Dodgers.

And that’s not the same environment (if that matters at all, which I don’t think it does, but whatev) as STL—it’s big, mostly apathetic crowds that like to turn against players when the big media (boy, can I see Plachke’s trajectory on Crosby now) alerts them to attack.

You can?

Honestly, I’m not sure what reading the Plaschke-React-O’Meter is going to take if the A’s deal Crosby there. It could be that he is a spoilt Moneyball protege who lacks heart—or it could be that he’s a gritty, scrappy player who doesn’t draw enough walks for Billy Beane’s computer to tell him to keep him, but who an old scout once told him could fill a ten gallon heart with the Dodger-blue blood he bleeds daily.

When you’re just pulling a bunch of shit completely out of your ass, which is Plaschke’s typical MO, you’re pretty unpredictable.

this one's easy

The day after Crosby’s acquisition:

Bobby Crosby, whose MVP potential was spotted by Peter Gammons and by the man really responsible for the A’s successful run in the early aughts (former director of scouting Grady Fuson, who the high-maintenance Beane rode out of town on a rail because Fuson wouldn’t subscribe to Beane’s myopic anti-scouting bias), was set back by injuries, sure - but he was more surely, and more insidiously, damaged by Beane’s take-take-take Moneyball batting philosophy. Beane could never just let Crosby be Crosby - which is, still, even after all that damage, a potential superstar in the offing. The old-school sureties of Colletti and Torre will finally give Crosby the confident vibe he needs to break out of his statistical straitjacket—and Crosby will give Torre that old confidence that he hasn’t had since Jeter: a genuine 5-tool guy who plays hard-nosed ball and ain’t too hard on the eyes to boot.

Second or third week of September, with the Dodgers fading badly:

Some might say Colletti’s fatal mistake in the ill-fated summer of ‘08 was never ponying up for that one big bopper the old Brooklynites were lacking. Others might point to the basic swap of Derek Lowe (to the Yankees, where he thrived) for Justin Duchscherer and Huston Street (from the A’s, both of whom suffered season-ending injuries within a month of being acquired). But that’s not what did the Dodgers in. No, it was a little-noticed element of Colletti’s Big Pitching Makeover that did it - basically swapping the Dodgers’ entire freakin’ future for career washout and legacy disappointment Bobby Crosby. Crosby, who never met a slider down and away that he didn’t want to chase like some rollerblading strumpet down in Venice Beach, and who lived a life of entitlement and never being called to task for disappointing expectations (hard to fault his dad, ol’ hard-nosed Ed Crosby, for letting a kid grow up like that in this benighted day and age), came to the Dodgers with stars in his eyes and visions of lolling on the beach. Well lemme tell ya, mister, hardball means hard work - and that’s precisely what we never saw in Crosby - what no one ever saw in Crosby. This bum infected the clubhouse with his “I don’t have to prove anything to you, here or on the field” attitude, and dragged the Dodgers’ hopes down to where his batting average resides, and has always resided - where little boys’ dreams go to die.

My point is that Hu’s 2007 should be taken into account, just like his 2006.

As for Crosby carrying no concerns of being a passable SS offensively, league average EQA at SS, 2003-2008:

251, 254, 253. 255, 249

Crosby: 252, 275, 223, 218, 239.

He was about average his first year. Very good his second, The last 3 years, he’s been well below the SS positional average. Even without taking into account his propensity to break down, it’s a stretch to call is offense passable for a SS.

New tidbit on Street ->
Briefly: Near-daily Huston Street trade rumor: The Reds apparently have some interest in the A’s closer, according to sources, and the Mets also might make a run at trying to get him. ... Working in a non-save situation after the A’s scored five runs in the last two innings, Street pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. He has had a rough month, but Street said that his arm feels great and his stuff and his velocity are the same as usual.

Interesting...
The Angels and the Oakland Athletics are among the teams being scouted by the Dodgers as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline nears. The Angels appear to be unlikely trade partners and the Dodgers don’t appear to be interested in A’s closer Huston Street and shortstop Bobby Crosby.

This is very interesting. Lets assume that the Dodgers are not scouting the Angels here, but are scouting the A’s. And lets say that they are not interested in Crosby or Street at the moment. Does that mean that another deal is going to take place? Duke should be starting in that series, so maybe he is the pitcher of interest? Or perhaps they are scouting Alan Embree? I think we can rule out Email Brown.

That would make the Yankees rumor make sense

As the guy on MLBTrade Rumors said, it wouldn’t make sense for the Dodgers to trade Lowe, even though he is a FA at the end of the year, when they are in the middle of a race. But, if they are trading Lowe for a bat from NY (who though?), and then trading for Duke to replace him, it would make a lot of sense.

The Dodgers would get the bat they need for their lineup while simultaniously upgrading their rotation for the pennant run, and having the better pitcher (Duke) for one more year than they would have for Lowe. And they have the prospect depth to trade for Duchscherer.

Rosterbation 2009

Lets do a little exercise… what would our roster look like next year w/o any more trades. What holes do we need to fill?

C1: Kurt Suzuki
1B: Daric Barton?
2B:
3B: Eric Chavez?
SS: Bobby Crosby?
LF:
RF: Carlos Gonzalez
CF: Ryan Sweeney
DH: Jack Cust

SP: Justin Duchscherer?
SP: Sean Gallagher
SP: Dana Eveland
SP: Greg Smith
SP:

The way I see it, next year we will have immidiate holes at 2B, Corner Outfield and 5th Starter. The 5th Starter problem can be fixed by promoting Gio Gonzalez, but if Duchscherer is traded, it then becomes a question of who takes his place on the roster. Will Cahill, Anderson, Simmons or Mazzaro be ready by then?

For Second Base, will they plug Eric Patterson in there? Or will they go with Gregorio Petit? Cliff Pennington? Perhaps two of the three if they deal Bobby Crosby.

The Corner Outfield spot is another question mark. It can easily be filled if Travis Buck ever remembers how to hit. It can also be filled by Aaron Cunningham if he is either promoted from AA, or gets called up to AAA soon and then start next year as the teams starting Center Fielder. Or, the A’s could try and either resign Thomas, or sign another DH and sitck Cust in the outfield again. Or the A’s could try Chavez at DH for a year and trade for a 3B such as LaRoche. Or they could trade for a 1B, stick Barton at DH and put Cust in the Outfield. Or they could call up Eric Patterson and play him in the Oufield if he doesn’t get the 2B job.

In any case, the lineup doesn’t look like it will recover next year. It might really be 2010 till we have a truley good team again, assuming we get a little luck and Doolittle, Carter and Cardenas are ready.

okay here goes:
1. sweeney is a future gold glover, he has played defensively like a 1 year vet, gonzalez has some work to do…
2. barton needs some more time in aaa, i think another month or 2 will do him a world of good.
3. lastly, since this is a single thread on trades (which I don’t like, because of lack of continuity) the a’s should do whatever they can for a street +murton and change for Dunn. It’s the deal that could possibly vault the a’s into contention and make a september stretch run, and free up the payroll to make a run at resigning him into his prime years (29-32).

by 74mk on Jul 23, 2008 11:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's a pretty limited sample size

for defensive metrics, but he has the second-highest RZR among center fielders who have played as many innings as he has in the AL (Alexis Rios being first). If he had enough innings to qualify, he would be the top-ranked CF in the AL.

His out of zone plays per inning in center field would rank either first or second in a virtual dead heat with Carlos Gomez of Minnesota.

Combine this with his plus arm for the position and it’s safe to say that in a limited sample size this season, he has been the best defensive center fielder in the American League.

Put Cust in left, extend Ellis and Duke, and hope the prospects force their way onto the roster via maturation, not injury.

I’d like to see a comparison of the benefits of signing a DH or acquiring a 3B side by side.

LF – Cust
DH – ???
3B – Chavvy (pending health)

Chavez (shoulder) will resume baseball activities on Friday, the Associated Press reports.

Spin: Oakland still hasn’t released an expected return date for Chavez, but early August is our best estimate at this point. Of course, that hinges on how well his shoulder responds once Chavez ratchets up his rehab efforts on Friday.

I think he’d prefer to hear that Chavez’s medical problems have been identified, and will be repaired so that he can be back in form 100% healthy in 2009.

I’m with Nico on reading “Chavez (shoulder) will resume baseball activities” as “Chavez (shoulder) is preparing for his next DL stint, which everyone assumes will occur within two weeks”

Because the surgery he had was "cleaning out,"

not “reconstructive,” and based on his setback, even Chavy has said he realizes he may need reconstructive to solve the problem.

And this on Frank Thomas

Thomas (quad) feels that he might be able to return by the end of the month without needing a minor-league rehab assignment according to the team’s web site.

Spin: Thomas is expected to begin a running progran on Friday, but could be back in the A’s lineup by early next week if things continue to progress well.

More on Harden
Street stuff: With a week left before the trading deadline, rumors involving Huston Street have intensified, with the Dodgers, Brewers, Mets, White Sox, Rays and Reds all believed to have interest. Los Angeles had two scouts at the series against Tampa Bay, including Bill Lajoie, who is a special adviser to general manager Ned Coletti.

If Street is traded, Joey Devine is likely to step into the closer role when he is healthy. Devine (elbow strain) will throw a simulated game Friday and report to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. He hopes to be activated early next week.

I don’t know what the WhiteSox have that we’d want for Street, and I didn’t know the RedSox would actually need Street…

... and now obviated by the Blanton trade

I don’t know that I’d be inclined to swap Duke in for Cupackes in this proposal without the “” being a lot more ++.

It all depends on what Manny has left in the tank. I keep forgetting how old he’s gotten.

Did anyone see Gio's line yesterday?

1 inning pitched as a part of a double header where they probably needed him to go as long as possible?

I find this highly suspect. We’ll be seeing him soon.

Josh Fields?

I’m not sold on him, especially since he’s repeating AAA this year after losing the starting 3B job to Crede and being injured during ST, but he’s a righty with some power who plays third (sorta… he’s not a good fielder)

Would Fields, Poreda, and I dunno—Egbert be a good return for Street? As much as I’d rather have LaRoche and DeJesus from LA, that seems unlikely.

what about... trading Ziggy?

I know this will incur the wrath of literally 100% of A’s fans, but oh well.

My guess is that most if not all teams contending for the playoffs would absolutely kill to have a guy like ziggy in their bullpen.
his stock has got to be considerably high right now. the only knock I can put on him is that he is still relatively unproven. too small a sample size for a team to be giving up top prospects.
but still… this is exactly the guy i can see a GM overpaying for.

[disclaimer: i dont want him to go. my thought process went:
-pondered an article talking about the A’s being bland, boring, and nameless
-thought, who is exciting on our team?
-first answer was Ziggy (plus cargon and sweeney)
-natural conclusion was: why not trade Ziggy?]

by oakinboston on Jul 24, 2008 4:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't know if Ziggy really has that much trade value right now

He has the stats, but he doesn’t throw hard, and submariners don’t generally garner a lot of interest. Teams will probably not give up a lot for Ziggy till he has a few years of experience in the Majors.

Bradford was a pretty good reliever, and he got, what, Jay Payton?

Nah. Keep Ziegler. Guys who can do what he does for league minimum are pretty essential.

Fresh column from Ken Rosenthal. The Rockies, six games out in the NL West, could certainly become buyers. They offered Clint Barmes for Jeremy Guthrie and were turned down, and continue to monitor Bronson Arroyo and Tim Redding.

What does AN think of Barmes? I’m guessing people aren’t real high on him, as there’s a chance of him really being Crosby redux, but he probably plays better defense and may have turned a corner with his hitting (suspiciously high BABIP of .347 says maybe not).

I could certainly see him as a throw-in in some kind of Duke deal if they (foolishly) become buyers, which is the bigger question. Can the A’s please pry Stewart and Nelson from them?

I saw that article and thought about Duke

At this point though, it sounds as if the Rockies are looking for a lower priced purchase. Duke would certainly be an upgrade but they have enough pitching depth in their system that they don’t need to feel pressured into making a move. They (probably) won’t go all in to acquire Duke.

They won’t give up Morales or Reynolds, they’d probably call one of them up instead of trading him for Duke. Fowler and Roe are probably untouchable in this scenario. You might, might get ‘em to trade SS Chris Nelson but that’s pure speculation on my part.

The Rockies have other options, plus they aren’t sure they’re still in this thing. If they split the next 6 games they probably bow out.

The monster at the end of this blog.

Thanks for the insight. I know next to nothing about Rockies prospects.

I can see why they’re high on Fowler… he’s absolutely raking at AA.

Garrett Atkins

I haven’t perused this whole thread but what would you guys think of trading for Garrett Atkins. The guy is coming up on his prime and could be a good addition. Aside from this whole “that’s not rebuilding” bs, I think it could be wise…

by stranahanahan on Jul 25, 2008 5:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

to continue...

ok, so no one thinks fields is great. Atkins is only 2 years older and a proven hitter. I would consider a duke for atkins trade and if the rockies want him it would be a great trade…
