Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Open Game Thread - Game 99: A's @ Rays (cont)

Same old story, same old song for the A's offense.

On the other side, Eveland was fine until the fourth, when he allowed two more runs (including a homerun that was crushed), but there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between 1-0 or 3-0 (current score).

The offense can't get off the deck against Kazmir. At least he's supposed to shut people out.

We go to the fifth for another try.

In my litany about why I don't like Eveland,

I forgot to mention that he has the worst body language I’ve seen in a long time. He looks visibly upset and unraveled every single time he doesn’t throw a pitch the way he meant to – which is damn often, I might add. I think he basically sucks – 5th starter material – and that he should not be in the A’s long-term plans.

Seattle is simply a bad place to play…

I have my opinions about what went wrong, but Sexson isn’t as washed-up as the Mariners fans and media like to make him out to be.

He’s in NY to provide right-handed power protection against lefties. In fact, he STARTS when facing lefties because he’s hitting 340 this year off them.

by WaddellCanseco on Jul 21, 2008 5:51 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He doesn't need to "turn" into a head case

And a billion pitchers have had talent and stunk it up. He has good enough stuff to make you think, “You know…he could…” and he doesn’t have “what it takes” to win in the major leagues, IMO. And I understand that he’s young but I’ve seen enough – Smith has a chance to be a solid major league ptcher and Eveland is Jamey Wright.

I don't think he has what it takes to

succeed over time at the major league level. Lack of command – really can’t put the ball where he wants even most of the time – poor body language, puts a ton of people on base and relies on a fair amount of luck and Houdinism to get by. I just don’t see it.

A 3.87 FIP is pretty good, even in Oakland

75% LOB% isn’t very high. If anything he’s worse than average with men on base. So he’s not been particularly lucky.

His GB% is nearly 50%. IF/F is 11%. Both indicate weak contact to me. LD% of 20% is a bit high though. I see no reason why he shouldn’t be a good 4th starter on a playoff team. In a good year he could be a Top 3 guy. Seems durable.

His HR/F is under 5% which could be expected to regress. It already has in this game.

He’s not a top of the rotation guy, but we could do a lot worse. I’d probably not keep him after his 4th year though as he got expensive, if I had a choice.

he's gassed

He’s taking big breaths after every pitch, and he’s lost 4 mph off his fastball. Everybody unravels mentally when they’re tired. I understand that he’s never worked like this in a season before, and I don’t care about the weight, but he needs to improve his conditioning. There’s no good reason for a pitcher to be winded.

He’s definitely not 5th starter material if he becomes more consistent. There aren’t five starting lefties with that combo of cut and velocity, plus the good breaking stuff. He can be outstanding. Pitchers struggle their rookie season. It’s natural.

by 31Boots on Jul 21, 2008 5:53 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Honestly, he has NO idea where the ball is going half the time

He misses his target sometimes by 2 feet – sometimes resulting in a pleasant surprise like a perfect strike on the outside corner when the pitch is supposed to be off the plate inside. You can’t win in the major leagues that way, especially when all the little things, like controlling the running game, fielding your position, etc. are weaknesses as well. And mentally, I think he has problems too – as you see every time he visibly chastises himself for throwing a bad pitch.

control

is typically the last thing that comes around for young pitchers when they make the jump to the big leagues. Eveland has a long history of good control (under 3bb/9 in the minors.) We’re being spoiled as A’s fans by our young pitchers doing so well out of the gate, but it’s not typical. Eveland needs time to adjust just like everyone else. Composure (which I haven’t seen as a problem btw) can be taught, if necessary.

He’s never pitched more than 130 innings in a minor league season. He threw winter ball this year, and he’s at about 120 big league innings. He’s tired and he’s going to have bad games like this.

Did we ever get a reason why Gio wasn’t called up? Braden’s terrible, and has done nothing at the big league level. Beane has got to know that. Do the A’s just not think Gio is ready yet?

they are brain dead for starting Braden.

by Trainman on Jul 21, 2008 5:53 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Presumably - the A's tend to call up guys

based on their being ready, not based on the big league club’s need. Which is smart, I think.

I'm guessing either

1) They’re showcasing Braden like Blake Stein
2) They intend to trade another starter and are saving Gio for the home game vs KC three days before the deadline and they think Braden deserves a shot as 5th starter.

Haha yeah, I was roving

I walked up and down the 1st and 3rd base lines over and over, getting shots while pretending to look for my seat… A lot of the shots are indeed from the Tier though, and they don’t look too bad due to the mega-zoom.

I don’t think Swooney noticed his stalker… Luckily! Poor guy, I wouldn’t want to scare him. Croz did give me a questionable look, though.

I said that Sweeney isn't as good as what AN is building him up to be...

I didn’t say that he won’t become a good hitter or a great hitter. I think he might end up with a very good career. But you have to put him in the context of other 3-hole hitters… or with other teams’ “best” hitter… and then you can say Sweeney isn’t as good as what we here at AN say…

I’m not knocking Sweeney… my main point was that AN is so starving for hitters that we act like Sweeney (AS HE IS RIGHT NOW) is an All-Star hitter…

I get your point but you can't make a guy a 3-hole hitter when that isn't his forte.

There have been plenty of high average guys over the years and quite a few of them were not 3-4-5 guys. Sweeney is a great player being forced to hit way out of position. Power should dictate the 3-slot and we simply don’t have anyone but Cust.
