Open Game Thread - Game 99: A's @ Rays (cont)
Same old story, same old song for the A's offense.
On the other side, Eveland was fine until the fourth, when he allowed two more runs (including a homerun that was crushed), but there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between 1-0 or 3-0 (current score).
The offense can't get off the deck against Kazmir. At least he's supposed to shut people out.
We go to the fifth for another try.

A’s @ Yanks, yesterday
Mostly Swoon, lotsa Croz, some Ellie, Cargon, Duke, Brown, Eveland, Street, etc.
The fans were pretty chill, I was impressed
I’ve been to Yankees games before, so I should’ve known… but I was impressed anyways
BTW - God, do Yanks fans LOVE Joba or what?!?
I feel like I saw 1 Joba shirt for every 1 shirt of anyone else…

Get him out of there before he hurts himself. Last fastball was down to 85.

In my litany about why I don't like Eveland,
I forgot to mention that he has the worst body language I’ve seen in a long time. He looks visibly upset and unraveled every single time he doesn’t throw a pitch the way he meant to – which is damn often, I might add. I think he basically sucks – 5th starter material – and that he should not be in the A’s long-term plans.

Disagree.
Seattle is simply a bad place to play…
I have my opinions about what went wrong, but Sexson isn’t as washed-up as the Mariners fans and media like to make him out to be.
He’s in NY to provide right-handed power protection against lefties. In fact, he STARTS when facing lefties because he’s hitting 340 this year off them.
I disagree
Eveland’s got talent. Doesn’t mean he won’t turn into a headcase though.
by Philip Christy on Jul 21, 2008 5:49 PM PDT up reply actions
He's actually had a pretty good year. So has Smith
We’d be a lot happier with him if the hitters were good. Or decent. Or mediocre. Or below average.

by WaddellCanseco on Jul 21, 2008 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions
He doesn't need to "turn" into a head case
And a billion pitchers have had talent and stunk it up. He has good enough stuff to make you think, “You know…he could…” and he doesn’t have “what it takes” to win in the major leagues, IMO. And I understand that he’s young but I’ve seen enough – Smith has a chance to be a solid major league ptcher and Eveland is Jamey Wright.

by WaddellCanseco on Jul 21, 2008 5:53 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't think he has what it takes to
succeed over time at the major league level. Lack of command – really can’t put the ball where he wants even most of the time – poor body language, puts a ton of people on base and relies on a fair amount of luck and Houdinism to get by. I just don’t see it.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
A 3.87 FIP is pretty good, even in Oakland
75% LOB% isn’t very high. If anything he’s worse than average with men on base. So he’s not been particularly lucky.
His GB% is nearly 50%. IF/F is 11%. Both indicate weak contact to me. LD% of 20% is a bit high though. I see no reason why he shouldn’t be a good 4th starter on a playoff team. In a good year he could be a Top 3 guy. Seems durable.
His HR/F is under 5% which could be expected to regress. It already has in this game.
He’s not a top of the rotation guy, but we could do a lot worse. I’d probably not keep him after his 4th year though as he got expensive, if I had a choice.
When you have a chance to get a guy like Sean Gallagher, you take it!

he isn't definitively anyone yet
I mean, dude’s 24 and has under 200IP at the major league level.
I can see why you’re worried about his demeanor, but his floor is BretT Tomko, it’s not who he is now.
Demeanor actually can tell you a lot,
as can the ability, or inability, to make adjustments.

I noticed that, too.
He seemed to unravel when the stolen bases occurred.
"PECOTA can pretty much kiss my ass."-Nico
he's gassed
He’s taking big breaths after every pitch, and he’s lost 4 mph off his fastball. Everybody unravels mentally when they’re tired. I understand that he’s never worked like this in a season before, and I don’t care about the weight, but he needs to improve his conditioning. There’s no good reason for a pitcher to be winded.
He’s definitely not 5th starter material if he becomes more consistent. There aren’t five starting lefties with that combo of cut and velocity, plus the good breaking stuff. He can be outstanding. Pitchers struggle their rookie season. It’s natural.
Honestly, he has NO idea where the ball is going half the time
He misses his target sometimes by 2 feet – sometimes resulting in a pleasant surprise like a perfect strike on the outside corner when the pitch is supposed to be off the plate inside. You can’t win in the major leagues that way, especially when all the little things, like controlling the running game, fielding your position, etc. are weaknesses as well. And mentally, I think he has problems too – as you see every time he visibly chastises himself for throwing a bad pitch.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
control
is typically the last thing that comes around for young pitchers when they make the jump to the big leagues. Eveland has a long history of good control (under 3bb/9 in the minors.) We’re being spoiled as A’s fans by our young pitchers doing so well out of the gate, but it’s not typical. Eveland needs time to adjust just like everyone else. Composure (which I haven’t seen as a problem btw) can be taught, if necessary.
He’s never pitched more than 130 innings in a minor league season. He threw winter ball this year, and he’s at about 120 big league innings. He’s tired and he’s going to have bad games like this.
I hope you're right
I wouldn’t build my hopes around him, personally, but hopefully I’m wrong on this one.

by Philip Christy on Jul 21, 2008 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions
Either he is not ready or
they are brain dead for starting Braden.
I would like to assume that Gio is not ready yet.
Presumably - the A's tend to call up guys
based on their being ready, not based on the big league club’s need. Which is smart, I think.

I'm guessing either
1) They’re showcasing Braden like Blake Stein
2) They intend to trade another starter and are saving Gio for the home game vs KC three days before the deadline and they think Braden deserves a shot as 5th starter.

YOU could
these guys are so jaded they complain and hold out and sign with guys like Boris just to get by…
"Just looking at Lackey's face, you just want to beat him" -Ray Fosse
I've wondered about that...
What’s the reason for trading away those players…is it as simple as getting close to free-agency and the GM knows that he can’t keep them given the payroll?
Or is there something else?
It's a deep-seated organizational belief

Harden was held together by a rubber band. And Blanton became horrible overnight.

The offense is and has been crap with or without Harden and Blanton, though.

This is something else...
Sweeney hasn’t even been that good and yet we talk about him like he’s an All-Star. Why? Because he’s so much better than anyone else!

From an outside perspective,
If he’s hitting close to 400 with RISP, it doesn’t matter how little power he has.
I know plenty of people are miffed with A-Rod for hitting poorly with RISP despite his power.
We'll give you Emil Brown for him.

It was between a power hitter, and good schools
Tough choice, admittedly, but we went with A-Rod.

.766 OPS...
Isn’t that good…
It’s certainly not bad…

It's actually pretty poor for a #3 hitter.
But again, as long as he can produce runs, I’m not ragging on him. (of course the other sabermetrics may not agree with me).
He certainly shouldn't be in the 3 hole. You can blame the A's brass for not
having a 3 hole guy.

leave it to AN to be on a rookie for hitting 300

How would you know?
Heck, how would you know how AN reacted to a .300 hitter, period?

Hey, I'm a big fan of Sweeney...
but we have to keep things in perspective…

a for all intents and purposes ROOKIE hitting .300
I hate to be rude but are you looking through a kaleidoscope?
"Just looking at Lackey's face, you just want to beat him" -Ray Fosse
I said that Sweeney isn't as good as what AN is building him up to be...
I didn’t say that he won’t become a good hitter or a great hitter. I think he might end up with a very good career. But you have to put him in the context of other 3-hole hitters… or with other teams’ “best” hitter… and then you can say Sweeney isn’t as good as what we here at AN say…
I’m not knocking Sweeney… my main point was that AN is so starving for hitters that we act like Sweeney (AS HE IS RIGHT NOW) is an All-Star hitter…
"I'm not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did." -Yogi Berra
why all the qualifiers?
just be happy we have a great young player having a very strong season. Why try and find some way to make it seem worse?
"Just looking at Lackey's face, you just want to beat him" -Ray Fosse
I was half-assed laughing when i typed it... like i said...
my point was not to degrade Sweeney… it was to say that he’s so much better than anyone else on the team that it’s pretty say.
"I'm not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did." -Yogi Berra
I get your point but you can't make a guy a 3-hole hitter when that isn't his forte.
There have been plenty of high average guys over the years and quite a few of them were not 3-4-5 guys. Sweeney is a great player being forced to hit way out of position. Power should dictate the 3-slot and we simply don’t have anyone but Cust.

You're right...
I make the same point when talking about Street… it’s not his fault that Geren puts him out there to blow games. If he’s not good enough to be a closer then Geren shouldn’t put him in those situations.
"I'm not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did." -Yogi Berra
And it's not Geren's fault that he doesn't have
a better closer or a better middle of the order option than those guys.

No. He has caught a lot of shit this year and most people are nuts
if they are blaming him. I believe he may have managed us to more wins than Macha. What makes me sick is that Terry Francona wasn’t qualified to be our manager and now he looks like the greatest of all-time. He wouldn’t have done anything with these guys either.

Look at it this way:
We may only have to see Kazmir for one more inning; then we can take a rip off Percival coming off the DL….
