Open Thread: Game 98 - A's @ Yankees (cont.)

The Duke is gutting-it-out on the mound today against a good Yankees offense. Of course, the A's are once-again K-ing at a mind-blowing rate and trail the Yanks 1-0 going into the 6th innings. Come on guys! Make some contact and the game interesting at least!

Bleacher seats in the new Yankee Stadium will be $50 a game.

Can we have Sweeney bat every time the A's have RISP?

Is he the only guy on the team that gets how to hit in those situations? No watching two strike pitches, no trying to do too much with them. Just serves the ball into center.

The fact that you've lived in Texas

would suggest that my two biggest complaints of living here would be null and void for you. It’s way too hot and way too conservative. In particular where I live is not any less expensive than California was, and it seems like they regularly take advantage of their poor people here. The consumer/tenant/buyer is not protected like they are in California. The education and social services are very poor. And the kicker is I’m surrounded by people who think Florida is really something special. I could go on.

So..

being 8 out of the division…is it time for hanahan, murphy, and emil to be let go and replaced by buck, petit, and patterson? Is buck struggling in the minors? Because i see no upside in keeping emil here the rest of the year…other than hearing Ray Fosse call him the “RBI Machine” once every 3 weeks when he’s fortunate enough to drive somebody in on a bloop hit.

I know where there is a farm that

will take in worthless baseball players. It has a tee ball stand so they can hit without much difficultly, and there is a “giveme rule” when fielding in that if you make the effort to get there you are giving the out even if you dont come up with the ball. Also there is lots of space to run and play.

Well, those were two bad ways to end the game. Davis was safe, though.

That’s also another game added to the list of 0-1 runs scored, making it 26 in 98 games (26.5%).

That’s not good, especially when your pitching only gives up 2. In those 0-1 run games, they’ve allowed 3 runs or less and lost 11 times, including today.

With the game on the line and a steal needed, it’s very common for the batter to swing through the pitch(especially if it’s a strike), thus slowing down the catcher. Im wondering why Davis always peeks in halfway towards second, it’s Not a H&R, its a straight steal!

One thing needed for Billy to do

Mass trades and a few DFA’s or demotions.

Street, Crosby, Embree, Foulke in a package for 2 bags of sunflower seeds

Cyanide pills for Hannahan and Murphy

And play the youngsters.

That would make quite a few here happy to see them develop for next season and to get valuable experience

You realized it was a joke when I put the part about the sunflower seeds. Obviously those players are worth $$$$. The whole thing was meant to be humorous and sarcastic at the same time.

I think some read it and didn’t take it in the context it was meant to be. It’s dark humor like you say.

I don’t wish death on anyone except Osama Bin Laden and it’s bad karma to do so.

I am surprised that people cannot see this (the post) for what it is

by Trainman on Jul 20, 2008 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And to add to that

IMO, it is embarrassing to Beane and his management to trot out lineups like this when there are alternatives that certainly couldn’t be any worse.

We know they are rebuilding and I for one and excited about the future. But put something on the field that the fans can respect.

If I lived in Oakland, I would go to the games still because It’s the A’s but I would take a sign that said, “Stop playing all the garbage”

Like I said, we need to play the youngsters or at least a few more of them to give them experience. I thought that it was too soon to being up Gio Gonzalez because of his previous control problems, but let him learen on the job.

by Trainman on Jul 20, 2008 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I once wrote that the A's might've gotten a two-piece and a biscuit for Huston Street

but his value dropped to just a drumstick after the second blown save in a row.

Of course, it is a joke.

I think most rational people know that, but there has to be posting-marms out there calling out everything that is even remotely touching to them—no matter how passing the comment is.

Just roll with it. Many of AN will agree with you many will put you down.

Just stick to your guns and keep it funny. I got your back on this one.

by Mikko O on Jul 20, 2008 12:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I can no longer bear to watch the A's offense.

It really does not seem to matter who is pitching for us anymore. The last two games were winnable but when you constantly have to cling to a tie or being behind by a run or two, it just starts becoming redundant.

I’m starting to see the frustration in the players eyes but really, does it matter if you’re not a legitimate big league player? Hannahan, Murphy, E-Mail, Bankston, and even Murton look like dog$5*t up there and the only bright spots are Jaguar Paw and Sweeney, sometimes Suzuki.

Ellis looks tired, Cust is maddening, and Crosby just sort of stays in step, not really going either way. Duke definitely deserved better today and I thought he pitched a real gutsy one today considering that he has not been well all week.

I’m sad but at the same time I’m more angry that this team cannot ever seem to stay healthy and they take two steps back every time one is put forward. I fear Billy is gonna trade my favorite remaining player in Duke because he has completely given up on this year and there are many teams that would put up runs behind Duke and give him 20 wins easy this year and for years to come if he is healthy.

Makes me sick inside thinking about it but I”m almost resigned to Duke having one foot out the door while Billy Beane is taking calls, counting up the prospects he can get back for Duke in a trade…...... :(

by mrod on Jul 20, 2008 12:50 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The problem with all of this is...

...Billy expected this team to be at 40-57 (like the Giants), but they overachieved and played to a winning record. This was his plan all along to trade and get younger and cheaper, and it has really backfired. It makes the whole organization look like they have given up.

A's, baby!

Worst lineup since '79

when the best hitter was Danny Cater. This team is unwatchable. Every day it is the same, work really hard and maybe score 1 run. There are only 3 players worth watching, Sweeney, Gonzalez and Suzuki. I would be very interested in the rest of the season if wholesale changes were made like some on this site have suggested.
Watching a Petit, even a Bankston and assorted other minor league players is much better than watching a Brown, Hannahan, Murphy, Ellis and Crosby. I already know what they bring to the party, now it is time to see what other guys have if given a chance. I have been an A’s fans since they arrived in Oakland, I have no problem with losing as long as I think the players have a future and will get better. But most of today’s lineup have no future so it is not worth watching. Clean house Billie, clean house.
