Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Open Thread: Game 84 - A's at Angels (cont)

Well, it's not a very clean game being played by either defense, but despite it all, the A's/Angels are locked in another of their close ones as we head to the fifth. Angels 2, A's 1.

why are we batting bankston so high in the order anyway? It’s taken gonzalez almost a month to get to the 6/7 spots

Wes Bankston

I took a quick look at his stats.

He seems to be a pretty low OBP guy, some power, below average defense, supposedly. Does anyone know anything about him?

by VORP is too nerdy on Jul 2, 2008 1:58 PM PDT reply actions

The Rays org used to be pretty high on him, and he has slipped every year since

Moved around different positions, eventually landed at 1st base where he’s still a subpar defender, and he doesn’t hit for enough power to justify a corner spot. But he does have good raw power that has yet to show up in games, apparently.

Message to the pitchers.

I’ve read a few comments about how we were mailing in the game today with this line-up. I just wonder what the pitchers think of something like this? It must be frustrating mentally to know if you do anything less than a shut out you are probably going to lose. I think sending out that AAA lineup today sends a really bad sign to the pitching staff. Especially with young guys we have that may be a little shaky confidence wise.

I totally agree

Not going out and trying to improve the offense sends a ver strong message to the Pitchers. The message to our young pitchers is that the organization is not really concerned about you. We care more about Daric Barton’s development than yours.

Hudler commenting on why the A's were picked to finish last in the divison by many.

He’s suggesting it’s because the A’s are a young team full of uncertainty, which is true.

But I chalk it up to idiotic sportswriters overrating the Seattle Mariners. All the projections suggested the A’s were going to be somewhat competitive in the division.

forget an outfield bat, we need to trade for a decent reliever. Hong-Chih Kuo or Taylor Buchholz anyone???

SSDD

just enterchangable suckieness with Folke and Embree if we lose the divison to the Angels by 2 games or less it will all be Geren fault

by A'sfaninNC on Jul 2, 2008 2:37 PM PDT reply actions

Answer me this

why don’t we have Gaudin in long-relief situations? I mean he’s pitched well enough to be our fifth starter!

by thashyt on Jul 2, 2008 2:37 PM PDT reply actions

There might be a positive to this series

Maybe this is when Geren starts going to Gaudin in high-leverage situations.

Ryan Sweeney: I probably irrationally embraced him before you did.

by Joey C. on Jul 2, 2008 2:37 PM PDT reply actions

Is Gaudin in Geren's dog house or something?

"Mount it? I already did. Oh! You meant on the wall?!!

Did Evelend get Hurt?

Or did Geren grow a she bump when he got over 100 pitches?

Pride And Poise!!!

by Raymond St. Martin (Saint) on Jul 2, 2008 2:38 PM PDT reply actions

I mean this as a serious question

No snark involved. But why would we take our Eveland when Kotchman was coming up? I know he’s hit lefties well this year, but I would’ve taken my chances with Eveland against Kotchman, then if you need to use Foulke, start with him the next inning OR if Eveland doesn’t get Kotchman, then you go to Foulke. Was it just that Eveland had hit the magic pitch count?

by Tyler Bleszinski on Jul 2, 2008 2:38 PM PDT reply actions

That is the one move worth second guessing.

I would leave Eveland in for sure. He deserved a chance to get through that inning. Pitch counts be damned.

What about Barry?

by MobiusKlein on Jul 2, 2008 2:38 PM PDT reply actions

There really isn't anyone useful in the bullpen.

Who can Geren go to with confidence in any situation? Gaudin can’t pitch every night.

What about Barry?
"Barry who?" Forst said, and I felt like I was in the middle of a knock-knock joke.

by KMoAsFan on Jul 2, 2008 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Gaudin can't pitch every night - that may be correct.

BUT geren doesn’t pitch him at all. Forget overuse, it’s more an issue of NON-USE!

by 33SwisherSweet on Jul 2, 2008 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions

ONE F'N pitch.

How many games has he pitched in before that? Not many!

by 33SwisherSweet on Jul 2, 2008 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Brown? Casilla?

Someone who has gameworthy “stuff” at least. Foulke has blown far too many games this year. At least allow someone else to do the favor

I am Ray Fosse's man crushes for Clay Wood and Jason Kendall.

by franks a lot on Jul 2, 2008 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Brown IMO

in that situation. A better chance than Foulke. Way better IMO.
Foulke not in in 12 days!! Terrible idea. Wait for a 11-1 game against….they missed it!

he sucked for us in 2003 and gave it all up to the red sox that year in the regular season and stunk it up even more in game 4 of the ALDS.

dont with his ars.

Rebuilding Mode

If we’re really in Rebuilding Mode, why do I have to continue to endure Embree & Foulke in close baseball games. Are we competing or are we Rebuilding? It’s the mixed messages that fuel my frustration.
