Chavez heading to DL
This is my first attempt at a Fanpost, and it looks like I'm the bearer of bad news. Well, crap. Eric Chavez, 3B, has landed on the 15-day DL because of that recurring shoulder problem that didn't get treated right. Looks like 1B Wes Bankston will be called up. Hopefully, the presence of Bankston will provide some competition to the struggling Daric Barton.

who did the A's remove from the 40-man to add Bankston?
I like the Bankston move, the A’s can definitely use another RH bat

When was Frank put on the DL originally? When would 60 days be over. The 60 days could
end around the middle of July, which would give them that flexibility.

Does their rotation suck that bad?
I thought they had like 8 starters going into this year.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
But Kershaw is doing fine.
Their overall ERA+ is 116. 3 out of their current 5 starters have an ERA+ above 100. A fourth, Kershaw is at 99. Meanwhile, their overall OPS+ is 87, and everyone other than Russell Martin has either cliff dived, the vets, or is not living up to expectations, the youngsters.

On the plus side
he’s right-handed, plays 1B, and has power. If he gives us the overall production of a right-handed Dan Johnson (with less patience but more power) that has some value for the team right now, given the rest of the roster.

Has anyone been bumped from the 40-man?
I don’t think Bankston was on it, and in fact the A’s site doesn’t list him as being on the 40-man yet, but it only lists 39 players. Was there an opening on the 40-man roster? If not, can anyone figure out who’s been bumped?

scary comment from Chavez...
“It’s frustrating,” said Chavez, who also had back and left shoulder surgery after being shut down late in the 2007 season and opened this season on the DL while rehabbing his back. “I just want to get to the point where I can get out there and know I can be a productive player, and right now I’m not.”Chavez, 30, said the 2007 surgery on his right shoulder “didn’t fix anything. They just went in and cleaned it up.” This will be his first MRI since the surgery.
“I don’t know if I’m going to need another surgery or what,” Chavez said. “I just know that it’s not right, and we need to find out exactly what’s wrong.

we needed a right handed first basemen to fill the void left by Sweeney. We will probably see a move for a 3b should we stay in this
I hope so because Hannahan and Murphy have been awful...
Hannahan entered last night’s game batting .136 (8-for-59) over his previous 21 games, with the AL’s second-worst overall batting average (.219), third-lowest average with runners in scoring position (.157), and the fourth-lowest slugging percentage (.330).

Bankston isn't a real option at third.
He’s committed three errors in his six games there this year, and has a staggering 20 in 36 career minor-league games.
The short-term plan has to be Bankston at DH, Hannahan at 3B, and Cust in LF.
So it goes.
Against LHP
I’d expect Bankston at 1B, Cust at DH, and one (or both) of Brown or Davis in the OF, with Barton getting a day off.
Today’s lineup should be up soon; we shall see.

when Chavez came back and actually looked pretty healthy out there – it reminded you of what he was once capable of. We may be accustomed to having a hole at third base by now, but it’s still a pretty big hole and a real blow to our hopes the A’s will contend this year.

Truly sad news
The realist in me expected Chavez to continue to disappoint based on his unfortunate status as a rotting corpse, but the fan in me hoped that he could prove my skepticism wrong. In this case, skepticism wins. It’s very hard to believe that Chavez will ever be a healthy and consistent player for more than a few weeks at a time, no matter how much people continue to convince themselves otherwise.
Small upside to this mess?
Since Bankston was called up, perhaps Tommy Everidge goes to AAA and Doolittle finally gets his deserved call up to AA?
And put me in the camp that would love to see LaRoche in green and gold. Elbert, LaRoche, DeJesus for Harden? Or if Blanton+ could nab LaRoche that would be good too.
"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy." - Don Sutton

Furcal's still hurting.
From Rotowire-
Jul 1: Furcal (back) awoke with pain in his lower back on Tuesday and may be out a little longer, the Dodgers’ official site reports.
Recommendation: The thought was that Furcal could return Friday against the Giants, though that seems unlikely at this point. You have to wonder if the dreaded word “surgery” has been floated among the team doctors.
"I'm going to take a camera crew and march into Billy Beane's office and demand to know why instituting his newfangled cost-saving measures means that the run manufacturing plant had to get shut down." FJM
Furcal is going to have back surgery

So does Cust.
Frankly, at this point the defensive hit is far outweighed by the increased offensive production.
Teams do frequently have insurance policies
on their more expensive players, as a way to manage the financial risk. I would not be at all surprised if the A’s hold a contract completion policy on Chavez.
The policies are never made public, so you rarely hear about them, and even if you try to investigate all the details are completely confidential. But there are insurance companies out there that specialize in providing that sort of coverage, so you know someone is buying.
None of the money ever shows on the payroll records, so you never really know if when a big star is sunk by injury, the team might not be taking as big a financial hit as it appears.
