Oakland A's trade extravaganza is it really a bad thing?

I've been seeing a lot of people posting on how frustrating it is that were trading away all these guys for prospects and so on and so forth. I have to admit myself when we got rid of Harden and Gaudin it was tuff to see him go because i believe he will win a cy young one of these years. ( If he is healthy) Which brings up a question if Harden gets injured again before the season is over who looks like the smarter team?

We got gallagher, patterson, donaldson, and murton. In my opinion Patterson should be up in the Majors RIGHT NOW! Ellis is the worse player in all of baseball in batting average at home with .181 batting average...THE WHOLE LEAGUE!!!! Patterson is tearing it up in AAA batting .333. I believe are outfield is real solid Gonzalez and Sweeney are gettin better everyday they play, but our infield needs some serious help! Barton needs to start living up to his potential, Ellis we've already traveled down that road, Crosby... I dont even wanna start, and Chavez has a amazing glove and i love the guy but 11.5 mill a year? I know Hannahan and Bankston have been playin lately but even though i see promise in Bankston i feel he's high strike out hitter and hannahan cant hit a beach ball.

I'm gettin a litte side tracked here the point i'm trying to make is that the trades beane has made in the past couldnt have been more beneficial to helping the A's organization besides the hudson deal of course. Haren and robertson for gonzalez, Smith, Eveland, Carter, Cunningham, and Anderson. Anderson is going to be a sick Ace for us sometime in the near future. He's done everything he can in double A and should be called up to Sacramento here soon! This trade will look pretty lobsided in the A's favor i gaurentee it in a couple years, if it doesnt look like it already!

Harden and Gaudin for Donaldson, Gallagher, Patterson, and Murton, i dont love it but i believe Donaldson will some day be legit same with Patterson depending on where he plays. I like Patterson also because he is very fast and has some power. I've heard he was recruited as a shortstop does anyone know if this is true? Gallagher has tons of potential and his first start and the 6 innings i've watched of the yankees a's game he pitched pretty well. Murton on the other hand i dont see him being with our ball club, he's definitley trade bait to many teams or he'll be gone with a package deal. Our outfield is already packed at eh major league level and i dont see murton being a good player unless he's a everyday starter. Get rid of him.

Blanton for Cardenas, Outman, and Spencer i love this trade because not only does it give us a legit second baseman prospect who will most likely have a chance to win the second base job next year with ellis gone. He also has speed, Outman another left hander for the A's club who has been a real good reliever and occasion starter as well, and Spencer i like a lot ASU alum who has some raw power.

As for the future of the A's i see is very bright and don't be surprised to see Murton, Embree, and Street gone before the deadline. Maybe bring in Matt Gamel or Alcides Escobar for the Brewers or maybe even Reid Brignac or Wade Davis from the Rays who knows? What do you guys think might happen?

+1 Mark Ellis hating is not allowed

by justarebelheart on Jul 19, 2008 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed.

There’s way more things that go into a baseball player than “home batting average.” Defense is a big part that marks MaEl what he is.

And there’s waaaaaaay worse players to be complaining about. Heard of Jose Vidro?

On Ellis

I wish the best for him i really do, but when is enough enough? If your can improve by sitting him why dont you do it? Thats all i’m saying and the stats speak itself. We have no problem sitting emil brown now and he’ll probably be released.

by greenstampede15 on Jul 19, 2008 1:15 PM PDT reply actions

Because

we don’t improve by sitting Mark Ellis.

unless

the opposition stops hitting the ball in the vicinity of second base altogether.

A'S NEED OFFENSE!!!!!!

ill give you that he should be in the running for a gold glove second baseman this year but i dont know last time i checked to be a good baseball player you need to hit the ball also. I know there intangibles that make a team better but when push comes to shove A’s need a consistent solid hitter. We all know the ellis isnt the ellis of old where he hit .300 all im saying is we have these tremendous prospects why not bring them in to platune with ellis at least. Right now we have one guy who is barely hitting over .300 and he’s a rookie! come on guys lets be real, ya defense can win you ball games this is true but as we saw today WE NEED OFFENSIVE NUMBERS!!!!!! not a casual fan i’m just saying how it is. there are hundreds of guys out there who can play defense and offense in the major leagues!

Offense scores runs

Defense saves runs.

Ellis saves runs, which is nice because we lose whenever we give up more than about two of them.

by nevermoor on Jul 20, 2008 8:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Even exactly two, as it turns out.

I stopped reading at the point where you said Ellis sucked

because that’s basically proof positive that you have utterly no idea how to value a player correctly.

maybe not owned, but rented cheap...

There are different contexts in which to evaluate players.

It’s easy for a casual fan to think Ellis sucks, because the little things that he does to win ballgames every day completely escape the casual fan. Also, average fans tend to overvalue circus catches from out-of-position fielders and undervalue solid plays made by well-positioned fielders, so his stellar defense does not provide much entertainment value for casual fans because he makes amazing plays look routine.

Ellis is boring and consistent and wins ballgames. Knowledgeable fans know this. I just wish he’d be a little more flashy for the casual fans… tattoo a unicorn on his forearm or go after John Lackey with a broken bat shard… maybe he could speak of himself in the third person like Rickey did… something cool like that…

11.5

Why do we care at this point about Chavez’s salary. The team’s payroll seems to be about 20-30 million under what it can reasonably afford and it’s not like it is going to sky rocket anytime soon given how young the A’s project to be over the next several years.

by Larry E on Jul 19, 2008 4:42 PM PDT reply actions

Don’t know anything new to say other than the A’s are in a slump right now and with today’s loss I see that there have been several “fans” jumping off the ledge with wildass trade demands, cutting players and poorly edited fanposts. But tomorrow is another day and with win there will be tons of praise for the A’s and what they are doing and a lot of DFA E. Brown, and with a loss there will be a lot of these guys suck posts and they should blow up this team and trade away 15 prospects for that one bat that will get the A’s over the hump posts but still a lot of DFA Brown.

The biggest piece of advice can give is this: “Stop wishing, hoping, wanting the A’s to spend money like the Yankee’s cause there isn’t that kind of money and the people making the moves for the A’s are not as bad at it as the management that once ran the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Everything is going to be okay, it’s just going to take a season to right the ship. Remember the A’s were picked to be horrible for a reason and a excellent start caused a lot of people to go hey the A’s are in first place and we could win this year when the reality is that this team is a year away from being good and about two from possibly being great.

Harden Trade Sucked, Ellis is Terrific ...

but the main problem here is the assumption that the recent A’s trades are about making the team worse now but better later. Even though that is OBVIOUSLY the case, the writer needs to understand that most on AN are entirely convinced that these trades make the A’s a better team right now.

The fact that the A’s are dropping in the standings like flies in beer does bear an astonishing resemblance to last year’s similarly-timed collapse, which coincided with the DFA/trade of Milton Bradley (which ANers also insisted would help the club) is no accident. (Who would you rather have, Milton Bradley or Aaron Brown?) Bottom line is that no matter what Billy does, many ANers will not allow for the fact that in building for the glorious future that will be the Fremont A’s, he has waved the flag on the Oakland A’s of 2008.

by solotar on Jul 19, 2008 9:23 PM PDT reply actions

Aaron Brown, really?

Also we wouldn’t have Bradley now anyway he would’ve been a free agent.

by iamawesomer on Jul 19, 2008 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Bradley finished

as a type A player after 2008. If he had finished as a type A with the A’s, that would have been one first round pick, and one supplemental pick.
