Barton to DL; Bankston Recalled
OAKLAND -- The Oakland A's recalled infielder Wes Bankston from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday and placed first baseman Daric Barton on the 15-day disabled list with a neck strain retroactive to July 14.
Bankston joins the A's for the second time this year. He has hit .214 (3-for-14) with two runs, two RBIs, a home run, a walk and three strikeouts in three starts with Triple-A Sacramento after being optioned on July 10. Bankston was selected from Sacramento on July 2 and hit .294 with a home run and three RBIs in nine games with the A's. He started each of the A's nine games following his promotion, including five at first base and four as the designated hitter. Bankston was batting .275 with 14 home runs and 51 RBIs in 70 games at Sacramento prior to joining the A's in his first stint.
Barton was batting .224 with three home runs and 25 RBIs in 36 games with the A's. He was hitting .194 (33-for-170) over his last 59 games (since May 2) after hitting .271 over his first 30 games. This is Barton's first career stint on the disabled list.
The A's have now used the disabled list 19 times this year after tying an Oakland record by placing 22 players on the DL in 2007.

I was at the Rivercats game last night, and asked Cliff Pennington, why Justin
Knoedler was playing first instead of Bankston, he just laughed and said I don’t know, and I didn’t see him in the dugout.

Well, now you and Justin both know why.
Is anyone else wondering if there is some skulduggery in the prodigious use of the DL this season? Not that I’m complaining mind you, Bankston playing first suits me just fine.

No. First of all, the players' union
is a watchdog for that kind of thing and second of all, what about a move like this suggests any foul play? If Barton looks like he’ll miss at least several days, the A’s can’t afford to play short-handed for that long so they DL him until 7/29 and call up Bankston – seems incredibly ordinary to me.

how long have you been watching the Beane-era A's?
If [player X] looks like he’ll miss at least several days, the A’s can’t afford to play short-handed for that long so they DL him until [whenever] and call up [player Y]
That seems incredibly extraordinary to me.

Not this year - the A's are overcompensating
“Oh my God, Ryan, you fouled it off your foot!! You only have two of those and now one is sore!!!!!! To the 15 day DL with you – you can spend the last 13 working on your sprinting!!! What? Rajai Davis has to use the restroom? We can’t be without a 5th outfielder for 10 minutes – to the 60 Day DL and we’ll just play Emil Brown all the time even though he sucks!”
I may be exaggerating to make a point, and more likely I don’t have a point to begin with.

but you do have a point...
It sure seems to me that since the A’s have a shitload of depth, it would be most logical to be conservative with injuries, not just to give them time to heal properly, but to give playing time to other viable players.
A few years ago, when names like Antonio Perez and D’Angelo Jimenez still dotted the roster, it was most logical to let someone sit on the bench for a week to heal, because one week shorthanded was better than two weeks of a far inferior player (hey, let’s call up Mark Kiger… not!)

You're probably correct.
But I’m cynical and am beginning to suspect that I see a pattern. Maybe they are playing just inside the rules, but consecutive years of “breaking the record for DL use” looks a little…..suspicious. Who knows, maybe it’s a management tool the players approve of. Get a little time off to rest up and recover during a long season….I don’t know.

Go more obvious with your thinking:
The A’s can’t keep their players healthy and they sign broken ones to begin with.

I would....
except the A’s get brand new shiny players and a new medical staff and yet revert to the same patterns. I’m not bitching mind you…..I just find the pattern….curious.

where'd they get a "new medical staff"?
Davis was Peter Principled into a desk job, and Sayles has been with the team for a while as Larry’s wingman.

Ah, I thought they had made some
whole sale changes. Apparently not. Why fix something that’s not broken?

Don't they tell the other players anything?
What if Bankston had been mugged and dumped in a ditch somewhere? No one would worry about not seeing him because they would all just be thinking he’d been called up or traded. He could lay in that ditch for days.

What's the difference, really, whether a hitter
watches a third strike from the batter’s box or a ditch? Plus, players lying face down on the ground, unconscious and barely breathing, are severly undervalued – how do you think we got MVP candidate Jack Hannahan?

I can understand straining your neck
anxiously watching potential 500 foot HRs curve past the foul pole, but how do you strain you neck watching pitches? Oh well.

no point in doing that
With Barton’s struggles at the plate, sitting on his ass “on the DL” isn’t going to get his stroke/eye/mojo back. If he wasn’t actually injured, and the A’s were benching him because of his lack of production, they’d just send him down so as to get his swings in.

Well...
They could leave Barton down in Sacto for the maximum amount of “Rehab” needed… I mean, he could conceivably be in Sacramento until Rosters are expanded on Sept 1st, right?
But anyways, this is not a good sign for Barton. A Strained Neck during “vacation” for a 22 Year Old? Did someone do something in NYC they shouldn’t have been doing??? If he wasn’t in the doghouse before the injury, he will most definitely be in it now.

Uh, no

But they could "Buck" Barton
That is, if he doesn’t hit well while on rehab, they could just activate him and option him, as they did with Buck. Easier transition than just sending the guy down from the parent club, for what it’s worth… Frankly I wouldn’t mind that course of action at this point, though I’ve been in the pro-Barton camp most of the year. We know he can hit major league pitching when he’s got his stroke going. We also know he’s been just godawful all… frickin’... year. I don’t see why River Cats fans (rather than me) shouldn’t be the lucky ones who get to watch the drama of Daric’s search-and-rescue operation for his damn batting stroke.

Slusser's got the details
Rookie first baseman Daric Barton went on the DL today with a stiff neck, the result of diving into a pool that was too shallow during the All-Star break. Barton, who knows how lucky he is to have escaped much worse injury, has six staples in the crown of his head.

Well, that's obviously an injury
of youth and stupidity….so good for Daric. Wonder if those are Office Max staples that he administered himself?

even though you may possibly be right,
please don’t say it out loud.
I used to put myself to sleep at night counting Barton’s future home runs…
If I tried to do that now, I’d be up all night.

You could count down from how many career home runs you thought he'd hit initially
And you could go all the way down to around 20 or so and probably be okay.

talk to him, though. I also didn’t even see Guzman on the bench.

not really surprised to see Barton on the DL
though diving into a shallow pool is an incredibly stupid thing to do.
I expect him to have the maximum # of days in rehab in Sacramento, once he’s cleared to play…then he might also be optioned there if he’s not swinging the bat real well.

very stupid thing
And Geren’s not pleased with it either:
Geren said his first reaction to Barton’s injury was relief that it wasn’t more severe, but Geren also didn’t hide his displeasure with Barton, calling the accident, “a careless mistake that hurt the team.’‘

In regards to diving in a pool...
This happened to me last week. Ended up with a severe concussion and a cracked spine. I am lucky to have gotten away with only that. It could have been WAY worse for Barton, we all know that.
