Possible Crosby Replacement...
So I'm not a Crosby Hater... but as I was perusing our newly stacked farm system (sans SS prospects) I wondered what free agents we might look to when Crosby's contract runs out after the '09 season. Well guess what 34 year old big sluggin' RH SS will be a free agent then... MIGGY!!!!!
Wouldn't that make Chavy happy and the fans as well... to sign Miggy to a 2 or 3 year contract for $6 Million a year so he can finish his career as an Oakland Athletic with dignity and help us open our new ballpark with a much more fearsome lineup including both he and Chavy with (hopefully by then) our new young studs: Suzuki, Barton, C. Gonzo, Sweeney and one of our newly acquired 2B.
As I said... I just was lookin' over the FA listings for after next season and surprised myself even, with this idea... but at gut instinct... I think it makes great sense!
thoughts???

Unfortunately, in two years
Miggy will be four years older than he is today.

for some reason...
If Furcal is available I see Beane trying to sign him. The payroll is low enough that it is feasible, and with no one at SS for the A’s in the near future, I can see it happening.

I heard he had regressed immensely in the field? At that rate, he won't be able to
play ss in 2 years.

He can't play it now
But shhhhh! Don’t tell anyone.

This is a canard
The fielding metrics have rated him as a solid-average shortstop for years.

Put it this way
He’s way better than Jeter, who inexplicably forced a MUCH better defensive SS to learn a new position b/c he’s the face of the Yankees.

Furcal is the best option that is fairly likely to be available ...
Tejada would not be without his merits … though Crosby is under contract for 2009 and, with defense factored in and Tejada’s likely continued regression it’s not clear that he would actually be the better player.
That said, BP and HBT agree that Tejada’s D has bounced back in a fairly significant way this year.
I don’t think I would give him a guaranteed multi-year contract, but I’d figure that with Chavvy’s health and Ellis’ likely departure, we could make the PT work without stepping on any toes. And I’d love to see him in the Green and Gold again …

someone will give Miggy more money than $6
at the very least by then to either play 3B, 1B or DH.

I really think Miggy would be a bad idea.
BB is going younger not older and is looking for a long term solution. With his going after 3 new 2nd Basemen I see that Ellis is probably gone after this season.
We have not received any new shortstops and BB likes Crosby. Also I do believe that his long term solution could be Petit at this point but he doesn’t want him to come up and spend to much time before Crosby leaves.

Tejada...
Would be a .680-.700 OPS guy in the AL by 2010. I wouldn’t pay him 6 million per.
You’ll get that kind of production out of Pennington and Petit by then, when they are reaching their peak.
I’m certain that shortstop will be filled internally, either with Petit/Pennington or somebody we acquire for Duke/Street.

i would love to see miggy...
even if it isn’t a good idea.
seeing miggy waving home runners and jumping all over the dugout and firing up everyone is something i will never forget.
i remember his first game against us, ... four years ago? the crowd gave him a standing ovation and he took off his batting helmet before getting into the box. i remember my eyes watering up like i was watching brian’s song or someshit. damn. he was like our fucking soul—but that’s the business of baseball.

My take is that the one way we could see Miggy
is if he’s brought back for one season because “the next A’s SS” is not ready yet and Billy feels he can get Tejada’s last good year out of him as a stopgap. Not unlike what he’s done with Frank Thomas.

Since he'll only be 36 at the time,
there’s basically zero risk of that happening. Someone will offer him a multi-year deal unless he utterly tanks in the next year and a half.

What's the standard deviation on Miggy's age, though?
+/- 2.7?

Not unlike Rickey Henderson in 1998
I was shocked to see Rickey led the AL in stolen bases with 66 at age 39, and scored 101 runs, with 660 plate appearances….at age 39!
Played his last year for Oakland in 1998.

What uniform is Rickey going to the Hall of Fame in? Will he be an "A"?

There IS some value in bringing in a former Athletic, even past his prime,
If you think it might enhance the odds of him being enshrined in the HOF in an Oakland uniform. Fans love nostalgia. I think that factored in at least a little bit in the Diamondbacks bringing back Randy Johnson – he’ll definitely enter the Hall as a D-Back.
Are Giambi, Tejada fringe HOF candidates? I think the Balco taint eliminates Giambi. Tejada’s stats hold up pretty well as a SS. Is Tejada a future HOFer?

I don't see
Beane spending a lot of money on a free agent shortstop. I think he’d rather get a minor leaguer he can develop through another trade, or maybe even try to move Weeks or Cardenas over. They can’t both play second.

Well, neither of them can play shortstop
so…
