7/18/08 DLD: No Blanton Links
Happy Birthday to LAXile!
First, let me point everyone to the Netiquette thread. Add your own feedback.
A brother's burden: Baseball in a time of tribulation - An article about San Diego's minor league catcher, Mitch Canham. Mitch recently lost his brother, 19 year-old L-Cpl Dustin Canham, under suspicious circumstances while serving in Africa.

Francisco Liriano's agent isn't happy with the Twins - Greg Genske, Liriano's agent, wants the Union to investigate whether the Twins are avoiding calling Francisco up to delay the player's service clock. Liriano has currently 2 years and 45 days of MLB time.
Big Sexy headed to Yankees - The Yankees have reached a tentative deal with former Mariner Richie Sexson. If the deal is completed, Richie will be in the lineup against our A's on Saturday.
I'm not giving any links about the Blanton trade.
The All-Stars choose the best player - Who won?
SPOILER! Alex Rodriguez.
Rodriguez received nine votes. Next was Josh Hamilton, the Texas Rangers outfielder in only his second full season, who got six votes. And the poll was taken around noon on Monday, hours before the Home Run Derby, where Hamilton smashed three balls more than 500 feet and won legions of admirers.
Interesting note:
Which leaves us with one remaining nominee, and it was the shocker of the day. The player named Los Angeles Angels pitcher Ervin Santana, whose 11-3 record and 3.34 earned-run average certainly is respectable, though he’s not even baseball’s best Santana. That would be Johan.
I think an A's player voted for him. Wait. The only ASG rep was Duke, so that's not right...
"The best player? Me," said Ervin Santana, the man who voted for Ervin Santana. "I’m not giving credit to nobody."
And now I have another reason to hate the Angels.

Jonathan Mayo's take
Cardenas
While his defense has always been behind his bat, he’s worked tirlessly (the A’s are getting a guy with off-the-charts makeup) on his range and footwork. The Phillies, largely because of the presence of Chase Utley in the big leagues, were looking at Cardenas as a guy who might move around a bit in the infield, playing both second and third. He’s improved enough to be an everyday second baseman and his bat will certainly keep him there.
Very Encouraging. Having no Utley, I think we can have him focus back in on 2B
off-the-charts makeup?

that's some quality research
Just last week, the A’s were six games out of first place when they took another first-round draftee pitcher, Rich Harden, and sent him to the Cubs.
that’s 17th round.

I'm going to make it worse on you
The movie is awesome. This is sort of a given at this point. But here’s my big, wild, crazy statement:
Heath Ledger captures The Joker character as well as anybody has ever captured a film character. That’s not to say it’s the best performance of all time, but he gets at the essence of the deranged clown absolutely perfectly. He was chilling, and I actually hope they never, ever use the Joker again in another Batman film. Retire the character. That’s how good he was.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go practice making the pencil disappear.

After reading this I wonder if you still want to see Manny in Green and Gold?
(Although, if other teams don’t want him either, does he become undervalued and then a Beane target?)
If true, taking off an at bat like that is a pretty indefensible thing for a professional baseball player to do.
yeah, I was listening to this guy on the radio this morning
He went on to allege that there was a perception that in a pinch-hit at bat at Yankee Stadium on July 6 - more than a week after the incident with McCormick - Ramirez took three straight called strikes to send a message to the Sox.

Liriano
Do Liriano and his agent have any gripe here? As far as I’m concerned, a pitcher could be 10-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a team doesn’t have to call him up for whatever reason. Is there some sort of CBA rule the Twins are breaking even if they’re keeping him in the minors for Super 2 reasons? This could be another thing that makes me wish all sports agents were fed to lions.

by thejd44 on Jul 18, 2008 12:03 PM PDT reply actions
The team is winning, and most teams go by the, if it is not broken why fix it, mentality, so
why change the rottion that is working. He was also terrible when they sent him down.
by theblackpearl on Jul 18, 2008 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions
So was Livan
Unlike Liriano, Livan has continued to be terrible in the majors.
But all the Twins have to do is say “we like him for his veteran experience,” or some BS like that. That’s why it’s so hard to win a grievance for something like this—the team just needs a reason, any reason, not to call a guy up. It doesn’t have to be a good reason or even a sane reason.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Yes
Intentionally holding a player out of the majors purely to prevent him from accruing service time is non-kosher. In practice, it’s almost impossible to enforce this (except when a team tries to option down a guy who’s injured), but it is against the letter of the law.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
Didn't Ryan Braun...
experience something similar so the Brewers could maximize his service time? I don’t there is anyway to enforce it, but it will probably be brought up or be a point of contention during arb/extension/contract negotiations…...
"Twenty minutes," says Jack Sr. "Thank god for Billy Beane."
I do feel like it's impossible to enforce in this situation
I just find it a little difficult to accept that an entity outside the team could dictate who should be on the roster. Seems like one of those slippery slope things.
Even if they are doing it for service time reasons, there are some legitimate arguments for why they’re keeping him in the minors. I don’t see how they can possibly win.
http://bocropleasestopswingingatbadpitches.blogspot.com/
by thejd44 on Jul 18, 2008 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions
They can't win
But I think they should. I also think Twins fans should feel pretty cheated. They’re in contention and have one of the best pitchers in the AL (assuming he’s fully back to form) stuck in AAA.
Perhaps this is my anarcho-syndicalist side showing itself
but it seems to me that the slippery slope, if one exists, is entirely in the opposite direction.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
The good Doolittle has a new Journal
For starters I went from arguably the best hitters’ league in Minor League Baseball to one of the better pitchers’ leagues down here in Texas. The wind blows in in most of the parks and the fences aren’t really far away so I’m sure I’ll be posting monster power numbers in no time.On a serious note, the pitching is definitely a step up and if you tuned into the Futures Game you would have seen about half of the Texas League toe it up for one side or the other. The way they attack the strike zone and use their off-speed pitches has definitely been a big difference thus far. And the overall speed of the game almost caught me off guard in my first game. But once the first pitch is thrown it’s all gravy.

Connie Mack IV
Did you know that Connie Mack’s great grandson is a US Representative from Florida? Why didn’t you tell us, Leopold? Mack IV is also married to Sonny Bono’s widow, Mary Bono.
Like a true A, Mack hit a double-play tapper back to the pitcher in the bottom of the ninth with his team down by one run in the recent Congressional Baseball Game. Luckily for the Republican team, the Deomcrat catcher Chris Murphy threw the ball away while trying to convert the double play, allowing the winning run to score from first base.
Children, until we have taught them better, will be perfectly happy with a seasonal round of games in which conkers succeeds hopscotch.

Anybody watch "Around the Horn" today (or ever for that fact)
Their second debate/topic was the A’s and more specifically Billy Beane. 3 of the 4 journalists/panelists don’t like how BB does business. Mostly because he hasn’t led the team to a WS victory and that he trades all his best players. The host and one journalists/panelists stuck up for him. One of the guys was saying he couldn’t understand how people could stay A’s fans after seeing so many good players bening shipped out. Then he said “no wonder the SF Giants have more fans” or something like that. The host was like, “Uh, if you pick up the paper and look at the standings you’ll see the A’s have a better record”.
