fAnPoSt Etiquette-marm
Another big A's News Day is upon us -- not as big as last week's, but still big enough to generate some terrific discussions in a couple of diaries, and big enough that some of us will be tempted to post superfluous diaries of just a few sentences addressing no new topic.
The rash of identical-content diaries that pushed all worthwhile reading off the page last week was extremely ridiculous, and I was (and remain) flummoxed as to why none of the moderators/administrators/whateverators said or did anything to try slowing the spread of the epidemic at, say, the 7th or 8th same diary. Instead, the scourge grew to (at last count) *23* diaries. Twenty-three, over the course of a just a couple of days... and most of those could easily have been a simple comment in one of the many existing diaries.
All I ask is this (and I don't think I'm alone in asking it): Help preserve the longevity of other diaries in the list by checking to see if there is already a place where your topic of interest is being discussed, and add your points to the discussion there. Please do not create a new diary if you have nothing truly new to say, because when you create a new diary, other diaries get pushed down the list and off the page. The section of "recommended" diaries is not large enough to accommodate all the other things that are also worth reading, and that deserve to be visible for more than a day or two.
Right now, the Blanton trade is being discussed in three excellent places: Zonis' post, which he created first while watching news on SportsCenter before anything had broken in print yet; a front-page post that links to Zonis'; and OaklandA23's Press Release post. We don't need any more... I wonder if five more appeared while I was writing this...

I don't
In addition to what FSU said, even if it’s halfway literate and not formatted so as to make your eyes bleed, the late-to-the-party fANpOsT that only reiterates what 1000 people have already said clearly indicates that the poster hasn’t read any of the extant commentary, and in fact isn’t at all interested in participating in the AN community. Especially when they’re registering for the first time, instantly posting, and saying or imputing that this deal is the last straw and the end of their A’s fandom.
They’re trolls. Plain and simple.

Better recommend system would help
I can see the argument that you can just ignore the diary spam and check the rec’d ones. But nowadays even a big 10+ recommend number still only keeps you up top for maybe two days tops. The “newness” of the recs seems to have primacy…3 recent recs outweigh 10 in eight hours. Tweaking the system so that the value of recs still aged, but more slowly, would help the community voice vote to keep a worthy topic front and center for longer.
Those were the reasons and that was New York, we were running for the money and the flesh.

I could be wrong, and I didn’t get an answer when I posed the question previously, but actually I don’t think the number of recommendations (past three) has any impact whatsoever in present system. Diaries in the top tier roll off in date order, no matter how many recommendations they garner. Once a tier two diary gets three recs, the oldest top tier diary is banished to the ether, whether it has three recommendations or a hundred, and whether it’s been on the list for five hours or five days. grover’s 21 hours-old Duke diary is an excellent illustration of this.
This does seem sub-optimal, but I’d guess the sb nation sites will always remain homogenized to a large degree, meaning that specific-to-AN tweaks are, alas, probably not imminent.

That's exactly how it works
Usually rec’d diaries are up for a couple days (unless something important happens) but there’s no impact to any rec beyond 3.
I think it works fine, but it’s rare to see a bad post get 3 recs, so the old post is at least getting replaced with quality.

I've recommended exactly 2 things. Ever.
And that’s been in the past two days.
I enjoy posting and reading posts and all that, but only recently has it crossed my mind that if I don’t hit that button, a bunch of silly, repetitive posts might bump the entire thread down.
Can’t we have moderators delete the extra fanposts from now on? Or maybe add some kind of feature that’s the opposite of a recommend button and if there are so many clicks (5?), the post is either deleted or dropped from the main page list. Different from flagging because it’s not going to get anybody kicked off the site, just a way of saying “this post adds nothing new” and making sure everybody doesnt have to click it.

An "unrecommend" button would be helpful
because if the moderators make the judgment calls I can foresee a lot of bickering about the judgment calls. Like what about a short fanpost with an important link but that fails to reach 300 words? As someone who doesn’t visit the DLDs to see every link, I never know whether or not to delete those. Sometimes I really appreciate those posts, yet I don’t like to see “filler filler filler” and enable those who know the rules and break them.

we've been having an "offline" discussion ...
... if a difanparyost is some admixture of superfluous, trollish (i.e., posted immediately by a n00b who obviously hasn’t even glanced at any of the other coverage), incomprehensible, audience-hostile, padded, etc., it’s gonna get deleted.
And the “flag” button does not automatically result in strikes/warnings, nor is it intended solely for that purpose—if you feel a piece satisfies a bunch of the conditions I outlined above (all of which are pretty much spelled out in the CGs) and the mods haven’t yet deleted it, then by all means, FLAG IT! That is the anti-recommend button. Besides, no one but us mods will know who the snitches are.

Unless you're posting breaking news
I wasn’t around when the Blanton news was breaking yesterday, but to say “ESPN saying Blanton is traded, no link yet” and then “filler” is acceptable, in my opinion. But those are rare, special circumstances. I’m not sure how Zonis handled it originally, but I can see how a very short fanpost would not only be ok, but beneficial to everybody.

as long as it’s an actual FACT that’s being reported—as in, “This done deal is being discussed on ESPN (or KNBR) right now.” for those of us who often go to AN for news before turning on the TV or radio.

I agree there are rare cases, and that’s an example.
Another was the Futures Game one where it wasn’t a game blog, so no one did a fancy lineup, etc. It basically said “The Futures Game is starting and there’s no main page entry. Discuss”
Basically, if it’s someone who has been a major part of the community (i.e. substantially more activity than me), they’ve probably got a valid reason. Otherwise, it’s a good indication that there is no FanPost.

This is an excellent topic
and since we can’t change the less-than-ideal way that SB Nation treats the recommended fanposts, we as a community and mods should certainly consider doing the best we can to make well-thought out, compelling diaries easy for everyone to find and read.
For a comparison, the Mariners’ blog deletes fanposts and even off-topic comments all the time. I think that at times they are a bit overly vigilant, but certainly it accomplishes the goal of encouraging on-topic discussion and easier browsing for the entire readership. I think many of us have dealt with the frustration of trying to “catch up” with what we missed on AN, and it taking longer than it needed to, because we were wading through dairies that a.) weren’t breaking news, b.) provided no analysis or commentary, etc.

Mr. President, it is not only possible, it is essential. That is the whole idea of this machine, you know. Deterrence is the art of producing in the mind of the enemy… the FEAR to attack. I'd like some feedback on this one
Since only 4 or so fanposts remain rec’d, and there seems to be a problem of good content getting pushed down too fast…
What do you all think of the idea of the editors deleting a stale fanpost if it gets rendered “useless” (for lack of a better word) a day or two later?
I’ll give you an example: If there is a currently a diary labeled – “Rumor: Blanton could be headed to Philly,” that’s a diary that could be deleted at this point, or at the latest by tomorrow. Other examples would be diaries like “Anyone need 2 tickets for tomorrow’s game?”, when “tomorrow” was 3 days ago. These are decent reasons for a fanpost IMO, but they’re also time-sensitive, and past the point of their value within a few days to any AN part-timer who checks in a few times a week.
If we deleted these types of diaries, and everyone toggled their “settings” on to “most recent 30/50 fanposts” to appear in the right column of their screen, you could pretty much guarantee that you’d never miss a diary, even if you had a stretch where you didn’t check AN for a week.
Anecdotally, I’m gathering that a frustration of some part-time ANers is that they “miss” diaries because diaries get pushed off the “recent fanposts” area after just a few days, especially during a crazy stretch like the trading deadline.

I like this better
While I wouldn’t mind the “got 2 tickets” posts going away, looking in the “rumor” type ones is a different matter. Those can have good ideas that pop up that maybe started halfway through and were not 100% tied to the topic. Also you may have a prediction, or other items (QOTM’s, etc) that are there that people may want to go back and see later that would no longer be there.
I had the fortune/misfortune of being on vacation last week. I got home and spent a Sunday afternoon plodding through most of the Harden disaster. I 100% support the idea of not having 23 different threads again, but once they start and get a fair number of posts in them, I would be hard pressed to agree with just getting rid of them.
My final though around this is if you go back and think of some things that everyone seems to hold dear I bet you would see that they were in diaries/fanposts that would have been deleted. (A bauncast in spring training where someone has the idea of MaEl riding a unicorn, a kid writing a like 3 line apology that turns into a thread about how tall high school kids are, etc)

Easier and better
would be to revive the AN 2.0 option which let users display 50 diaries on their page at once. Max viewable now is 25, which is like a day and a half’s worth when things get hot.

I am generally against deleting any fanposts
They are interesting to look back on, and I think the problem of pushing out older fanposts is overstated. When a diary gets recommended, it is rare that it lasts in the recommended section longer than people actually continue to comment there.
I would emphatically not want to delete a “Blanton the Phillies?” diary, however bad, as there may be some good comments there, and the existence of bad diaries is just not that big of a deal, and often the humor provided outweighs whatever detraction from the discourse that bad diaries provide.

You and Matthew Yglesias have quite similar prose styles.
Agree on the deleting, mostly. While I dislike the cacophony of nonsense that occasionally overtakes the diary section, I wouldn’t want to address that by way of some kind of draconian fanpost eradication policy.
On the other hand, some if it isn’t much more than spam, and actually I do think it’s problematic when perfectly servicable non-recommended posts get knocked down the list by offerings that really should have been a comment somewhere.
These offerings (the lame ones) are for the most part products of self-absorption, not naivete, in that the authors can’t be bothered to glance at the site or consider their audience at all before clicking “submit”. This is because, basically, they don’t give a shit. They’re writing strictly for the benefit of their own id, and I hate that.
It’s not that I think AN should have unreasonably high fanpost submission standards, or should not embrace all manner of fans, hard core and casual, blog-savvy and not. However: If a post is a) redundant, b) bereft of even token effort, c) shrill, d) authored by someone who joined an hour ago, and e) contains more than 62 exclamation points, it ought to be deleted, if only to make the site more readable for those who do give a shit.
Sigh. I need to comment more about baseball, and less about this sort of thing. Given that (rampant) overuse of the term “meta” is high on my list of pet peeves, I really should try to avoid perpetuating conversations that encourage it. Alas, my will is weak.

DLD FanPost etiquette
I posted this in another place, but it bears repeating here. One of the problems with recommended diaries is that three of the available slots are typically taken up by DLDs. It’s great to have the current day’s DLD in the recommended area, but the other slots should be available for other compelling content.
I have two suggestions to make this better:
1) If you recommend a DLD, please unrecommend it the next day.
2) If you author a DLD, include a link to the prior day’s DLD for easy access.

because any post labeled “DLD” will instantly and automatically get like 15 recs. No matter how half-assed it is.

But has there ever been a DLD that didn’t get insta-recommended? It would be nice if the DLD was front-paged every morning so they didn’t consistently push good diaries down, and so the recs wouldn’t get clogged with three of em. I do think the mods have to handle that rather than the posters though. Who unrecommends stuff?

The old DLD will get moved as long as people un-rec it.
Old AN DLDs would frequently get un-rec’ed to get the fresh ones in the top section of the diaries.
I LOVE the DLD but no way do I want it on the front page, unless it was the slowest day in the off-season. There are some really great things (Saturday posts) that get pushed out of the way already. And not everyone reads the DLD or wants to.

Ok
Can the recs to the DLD be closed every day to everyone but mods, and they can unrecommend it the next day? There’s no denying that three DLDs end up in the recommended posts list on a consistent basis (and when there’s not three there are two.) I like the DLD too, don’t get me wrong, but it really does bug when useful threads get pushed down for more than one DLD. Once a thread gets pushed out of the recs, it’s done.

Is this really such a big problem?
There are DLDs (at most) daily, so if there are three of them up that means there have only been two “real” rec’d posts in that many days. People get tired and move on after a day or two anyway.

re
It’s not a big problem no, and I don’t want to go on and on about the DLD because I do like it quite a bit. However, most people do move on after a day or two, and the posts don’t keep getting recommended (how many posts do after they make it to the top, btw?) but plenty of times there is still good discussion in a thread (detailed discussion by posters who care enough to stick around and think about posts), and as soon as the thread is pushed down, and ivariably off the front page entirely, the thread is done. And it’s pretty lame when it’s for dead DLDs.
Whatever, I’m not trying to make a federal case, and it really isn’t a big deal. Just bugs.

One of the things I learned I like the least about the DLDs...
...was when the US Olympic team announcement was made and it included Cahill and Anderson, that was the main part of the DLD. Nothing in the subject line indicated the news was there. Someone else posted it as a separate diary and I prefer it that way. If it’s news related to the organization, I don’t think it should be in a DLD. Aren’t the DLDs basically huge off-topic sessions anyway for the most part?

The DLD
The idea behind the DLD was precisely to reduce diary clutter for minor A’s related news items. In the early days of AN, before sal invented (or is it discovered?) the DLD, every article about Moneyball or any mention of some A’s player in a chat by Neyer or Gammons would immediately generate a couple of diaries that said little more than “Hey, look at this article about about the A’s” and tended to generate little further discussion. Sal suggested consolidating all these posts, and whatever short discussion they engendered in one place. Obviously a significant news item likely to generate lots of discussion, like a trade or an injury to a key player, would still get a separate diary.
For better or worse, the DLD then evolved into a kind of generic open thread, and many of the links that get posted there are indeed off topic. But it’s also still the central repository for links that mention the A’s, and plenty of ensuing on-topic discussion.
The Olympic team thing is a close call. On the one hand it was (apparently) of interest to some people who don’t feel like wading through all the other stuff in the DLD. On the other hand, the separate diary only generated 8 comments, almost all of which were (sorry, 74mk) meta-discussion of whether it should have been posted at all.

Fair enough. I'm not as much of a vet here as others.
But at the same time, maybe the DLDs could be titled better? Something like “DLD 7/18/08: A’s on Olympic Team, etc.” or something like that.

On most days, the DLD is made in the morning.
If the story breaks (whatever you want to call it) and the link is posted at 4:00 in the afternoon, is the author supposed to change the title?

It all depends on what the author is originally putting into it, I guess
If the author later adds something to the post itself and wants to specify that with a title edit, go for it.
But if it’s just stuff added through comments, probably not.

if something has been posted in the DLD, but you feel it's worthy of its own stand-alone discussion ...
... (whether you’re aware of the DLD-ifiedness of it or not) you should post it in a fanpost. I personally gots no problem with that.

My understanding is that recs from weighty Quakers carry more top-of-page-boosting-juice. I would guess that’s why mrfox’s fdiaryanpost hasn’t climbed. I don’t know what the algorithm is, but so far as I can tell (unless Blez/Nico/??? have super-admin powers I don’t, and I don’t know what their motives would be in suppressing the upward mobility of that or any other diafanarypost) it just hasn’t “beaten” the ones above it.

And interesting that comments can be closed, but it can still be rec’ed. I’d call that a bug.
My vote for that particular item is that it belongs linked somewhere permanently on the front page, with the ANcillaries and the CGs—and with mrfox posting a new fanpost with a link to it every time it’s updated.

Yeah, there were 25 Harden trade threads, but a good amount of them had interesting stuff. I agree it’s annoying, but not much more annoying than the 600 posts in the Blanton trade thread. I got about half way through that and gave up, did a couple searches on posters I like to read.
I’m generally very anti mod-meddling on message boards (I was really annoyed a post got pulled last week because the link had already been posted in the DLD), but, in special circumstances, they just need to step up a little, and move or remove worthless threads as quickly as possible (but not posts with interesting stuff.)

Another solution?
I think it would be great if there was an algorithm that took into account TOTAL recommendations and RECENT posting activity in a fanpost to determine its “worthiness” on the “most recommended” list. That way – an active fanpost that has 10 recs will stay on top, despite newer fanposts generating 3 recs. However, once the 10 rec fanpost becomes “stale” – the posting activity on it will decline, and it will slowly fall off the list. This way – no one has to “unrecommend” a post and we’re not seeking any moderators to “push down” posts and pestering them to do so…
