Breaking News: SportsCenter Reports Blanton traded to Phillies
For three minor leaguers, Tim Kurkjian talking on ESPN right now. More when I get the links.
[update] Kurkjian did not say who the players acquired were, though the host did quesiton why the Phillies wanted a pitcher with a 5 ERA and a 1.5 WHIP
[update 2] From Rotoworld:
ESPN's Buster Olney says the Phillies have acquire Joe Blanton from the A's for three minor leaguers.
No word yet on the prospect, but the A's needed to get either Carlos Carrasco or Adrian Cardenas here. Infielder Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson are the Phillies' next-best prospects. Getting both Carrasco and Donald would have been a coup for the A's. What this does for the Phillies' plans for Brett Myers is unclear. If Myers would be happy in a setup role, it'd now make sense for the Phillies to convert him.
[update 3] For those curious, you can find Buster Onley's original "Blanton will be traded" video here.
[update 4] The Links have arrived. SF Gate confirms the Blanton trade, and ESPN reveals who we got in the deal.
The Athletics get second baseman Adrian Cardenas, pitcher Josh Outman and outfielder Matthew Spencer, all minor leaguers.
[update 5] Stats for all!
2B Adrian Cardenas [BaseballCube] - Baseball America #2 Phillies Prospect
P Josh Outman [BaseballCube] (great name for a pitcher, btw) Baseball America #4 Phillies Prospect
OF Matthew Spencer [BaseballCube]

Blanton has been really terrible this year, his walk rate and home run rate is way up and he can barely make a 5 ERA with a great park and defense. The A’s can replace him with almost anyone and not lose a thing.

Whomever we get back, the rotation just improved
The question is who gets called up to replace Blanton, if no one is acquired in the trade.

I know losses don't mean everything
but Blanton had the most in the league at 12. We’re only 4.5 back in the Wild Card and will more than likely be upgrading the staff in this case. I’m ok with it.

Hell no
Addition by subtraction.
George Bush :-) showed what happens when you don’t acknowledge reality and you let your ego rule. If Beane was POTUS, we would have a much better country and domestic + foreign policy would be CONSTANTLY IMPROVING instead of denial and P.R. spun excuses.
We get Gio Gonzalez moved up to JB’s spot. IT’S GIO-TIME. Joe gets a fresh team and a darn good one. BOTH TEAMS WIN IN THIS TRADE!!
Cardenas is the Phillies top postition prospect according to the usually skeptical baseball prospectus 2008. Can’t speak yet for the other two guys.
I realize our emotions often cloud or decisions in investments and this is no different. As in the stock market, bulls and bears make money and pigs get slaughtered. The worst move is no move if you aren’t ready to play the top teams in playoffs. And if you haven’t noticed in the post-steroid era, its a new dawn of young stars in MLB.
Way to go Billy, you are growing a powerhouse long-term CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM from a good second place team.
The A’s are wounded for sure, and young, but l wouldn’t be at all surprised if we contend in 2008.
Now I can root for Chicago Cubs and Philly in the NL.

This is just a classic Beane case of trading a valuable player
While not losing anything. Gio Gonzalez is easily good enough to fill in the role.
This is the easiest way to get Blanton out of the rotation while maximizing his value.
Great job by Beane.

The other stadiums in the NL East are pitcher’s parks. Shea is a pitcher’s park. As is Turner. As is Florida. It’s too early to tell with Washington, but it looks like it too is a pitcher’s park.
And pitching for the Phillies, he won’t have to face the offense of the Phillies. Granted, the Mets, Marlins, and Braves all have pretty good offenses.

I've never been much of a Blanton fan -
even when he was on he didn’t have either the electric stuff of Harden or Haren, or the ruthless efficiency of Hudson or Mulder. But the people who seem to think this trade is “addition by subtraction” are focusing way too much on his results from this year, and in particular the past month. Blanton has a solid track record as a decent (and durable) starting pitcher, and those don’t grow on trees, even for the A’s.

eh
Sure, we now have something like 10 pitchers (Duchscherer, Eveland, Smith, Gonzalez, Gallagher, Simmons, Mazzaro, Cahill, Anderson, Rodriguez), with a reasonable shot at being in a big league rotation within the next 2-3 years and a few others with an outside shot at it (Meyer, Italiano, Ross, Outman). That’s something not many other teams can claim, and I’m all in favor of trading from a position of strength.
But the attrition rate is high – some will have serious injuries in the minors, some will struggle against better hitters, and some will make it to the majors but still not be as good or as durable as Blanton has been so far in his career. Like I said, I don’t particularly mind losing Blanton, but I don’t think we should blithely assume that 220 league-average innings is something that can be easily replaced, either in the short or the long term, even from our pitching-rich organization.
"May a nit suck Cajun geese?" wonders Red. No, we see gnu Jack Cust in a yam.

I think as early as next year
it may have made sense not to pay him 4 million or whatever instead of the minimum when he’s not obviously one of the best 5 pitchers. He’s probably better than Eveland, maybe better than Gio next year, but with the higher price tag, and uncertainty as to whether he’d actually be better, it’s not clear to me that he had that much value going forward.
The A's colors are green and gold.

Outman
Cardenas definitely looks like a nice prospect, especially if he can stick in the IF (it sounds like reports are mixed).
Outman has a pretty high walk rate to go with his strikeouts.
Spencer’s appeal must be based on scouting, because his stats this year are pretty horrible. But our system is not exactly overflowing with good position players, so even a C+ prospect is worth something to us.

I think even DiNardo or Saarloos could pitch at about the same level Blanton was this year. And if their willing to push Gio he could be an improvement this year.

So we traded our WORST starter...
Yep. Thats screams given up.
When will then be now? Soon.

He's been a mess so far this year...
but he can have one of those dominating months like he always did every year..plus up until this year, he’s been reliable, an innings eater, and a decent #3 starter. Point is, he is not as bad as his numbers are right now.

He just can't get through the order twice any more
It’s either one of two explanations
1. Conditioning problem, which he could fix (but Philly may not be the ideal place)
2. Stuff problem, in which case we just made out like bandits.

When did we pick up TBD?
He is scheduled to pitch on the A’s site. Seems kinda dark and ominous in his picture.

Tampa Bay Devil, if only to hear this exchange:
Fosse: “Who’s pitching tonight, Ken ?”
Korach: “Tampa Bay Devil, Ray”

From mlb.com:
“The sources who confirmed the trade would not identify the prospects, and if none of them are big league-ready starters, it’s likely that Gio Gonzalez will be promoted from Triple-A Sacramento, giving the A’s three southpaw starters.”

From a Phillies Blog
http://phuturephillies.com/2008/02/11/pecota-and-phillies-prospects/
Written in February 2008, so reasonably recent
Adrian Cardenas; 37.0 Upside, 1.02 BETA [comparables = Hank Blalock, Nate Spears, Paul Kelly, Brent Abernathy]Cardenas comes in as the 9th highest prospect on the 2B list. A few guys at the top look to drop off this season because of eligibility (Antonelli, Patterson) so he could jump up this list, especially moving to a better hitting environment in Clearwater. The big thing here is his first comparable, Hank Blalock. Blalock’s career has sputtered a bit due to injury, but he burst onto the scene as a 22 year old in 2003, posting an .872 OPS in the big leagues in 567 AB. Cardenas seems to have the pure hitting ability, the power is the only real question mark, in addition to where he settles in defensively.
Spencer:
Matt Spencer; 10.0 Upside, 0.98 BETA [comparables = Mike Butia, Mark Hamilton, Jason Fransz, Dan Johnson]Spencer doesn’t get a whole lot of love from PECOTA, but his BETA is right near average in terms of it’s riskiness. Spencer of course only has a half season under his belt, and could see his number rise with a good 2008 campaign. Dan Johnson saw some big league time with Oakland at 1B, and Mark Hamilton is a 1B prospect for the Cardinals, so it might see Spencer as following along that path. I think Spencer is a guy who could outperform the expectations set here.
And Outman:
Josh Outman; 18.7 Upside, 1.43 BETA [comparables = Josh Kalinowski, Daniel Haigwood, Michael Mimbs, Charlie Manning]Outman is one of the more interesting guys, not only on this list, but in general. We all know how he greatly altered his mechanics, and how he’s still fairly raw, all things considered. His Upside score isn’t great, his BETA is lower than a bunch of other Phillies guys on this list, but scouts still love the raw velocity and potential. The interesting thing is Dan Haigwood showing up as a similar player. Haigwood was a soft tossing lefty for the most part and lacked Outman’s velocity. His control wasn’t the best though, which is Outman’s biggest fault at this point.

I like how
Spencer’s comparable is Dan Johnson. Great.

Hey, it's good! There's a gap that needs to be filled. Just practice:
“Matt Spencer?” “Matt Spencer.”
"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."

Blalock?
I could deal with a Blalock or two on the team.

Is it just me
Or was Outman BORN to be a pitcher.
That name can only fare well with the baseball gods

Well, at least he's not
a light-hitting low-OBP middle infielder or OF a la Juan Pierre.

I can't understand why some people are upset on here...
Dude, it’s not like he is dead or anything….you can just flip over to the Phillies station and watch him stink over there!
Good bye, thank you and (thwack…sound of door hitting sizable ass) good luck!

Go easy man
Blanton pitched well, and was a fun member of the team. No need to thrash him for being league average. Among our rotation, anyone could look bad if they have a rough 1/2 season.

About the trade
I dont think it signals the white flag being waved as Blanton was not doing much for the A’s this year and even in his starts when he was good the A’s were still on the short end of the win/loss stick. I like the new blood to come into the starting rotation, but I wonder who it is going to be. Hopefully Barden and/or some of the former MLB guys at AAA will at least pitch the A’s to a .500 record in there starts. Also idk if its 100% yet but yahoo sports has Smith taking the hill tomorrow in NY.
