Street or Blanton to Philly Rumors
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/16/SPHC11PNK3.DTL
" The Harden deal increases the chances that the A's could make more moves before July 31, with Street and starter Joe Blanton potentially on the block. Rumors about Blanton and Philadelphia gained speed Tuesday, and there were also rumblings that teams have interest in Duchscherer. There's still a chance, even with Oakland six games behind the Angels in the AL West, that the A's will move to pick up a big right-handed bat, a need they have this year and beyond."
What does everyone make of this?
Philly has pat burrell but no way are they trading him slash no way can we afford his salary. Is beane going for jayson werth? He seems kind of old at 29 and not a good power bat, just a mediocre one, but good obp.
Not many righty power prospects in philly's system. Dominic brown is a lefty. I'd be stoked on getting adrian cardenas, a future mark ellis replacement, but he bats lefty. Lou Marson has good obp but is a catcher which we don't really need.

I've a request

I suggest we let this site work like a free-market
If people didn’t want to rosterbate we wouldn’t see so many fanpost on it. The times that this site is most popular is not after sweeping a big opponent, but rather when we make a trade… even if it’s not what you come here for.

Enjoy your multitudes of Rich Harden diaries then.
As for the free market, the “problem” is that your example doesn’t work like a free market. In a real free market, if enough people dislike the product, and disdain it, the producer either has to produce a new product, or go bankrupt.
On AN, there’s no way to do that. Mockery and disdain won’t cause a bad diary to be eradicated. The only way to “get rid” of a bad diary is for other posters to post newer diaries that bury that bad diary.

I don't post "interesting fanposts on an
original idea” because I don’t have the time and don’t want to post crap that is written in 5 minutes after getting up in the morning.
Apparently, you have no problem with crap that is written in 5 minutes after getting up in the morning.
Also, for all your claims that “I have more “issue” with people scoffing at imbalanced trade ideas, and getting bent out of shape over the discussions occurring, than I have over the discussions themselves.”, you participate in mocking imbalanced trade ideas as anyone on this board.

Seems to me as if discussing
rumored deals, possible deals, and ideas about deals is a staple of fan discussion. I have more "issue" with people scoffing at imbalanced trade ideas, and getting bent out of shape over the discussions occurring, than I have over the discussions themselves.
Where I would agree is that an entire fanpost dedicated to "What do you think of this trade idea?" is a waste because it doesn’t come from any rumored reality and all you get back is "I like it," "I hate it," and "You’re an idiot" in various forms. But something discussing "a Blanton deal" or "A Street deal" or "A deal with the Rays" seems reasonable – and if one is up I would hope all related ideas would be offered within that fanpost rather than deemed worthy of a new fanpost.

Also, they need to use it intelligently with the DLD.
Fine and dandy to recommend the current day’s DLD, but the previous DLD should be unrecommended as soon as a new one is available. Much of the time, the recommended list is three different DLDs and whatever else bubbled up. I wouldn’t mind if the admins simply managed that, either.

I was wondering if something simple,
such as basically Blanton for Werth, might help both sides. Werth’s numbers are solid, both this season and career, without being “blow you out of the water” good so as to make him unattainable. His L/R splits are significant, but overall he looks like an upgrade from Murton (especially due to his speed), and if the A’s acquired Werth they could very well deal Street and Murton to the Rays and be set for the next couple seasons, with:
R. Sweeney – RF
Werth – LF
Cust – DH
Chavez – 3B
Gonzalez – CF
Ellis – 2B
Barton – 1B
Suzuki – C
Crosby – SS
Patterson – Tony Phillips/Chone Figgins Utility Stud
Street/Murton would yield you anything from a 3B or SS prospect to yet another good young starting pitcher who would allow you yet more depth to trade for a 3B/SS prospect this Winter.

He's not a long-term consideration
and this lineup is conceived as much for 2009 as 2008. For now, when Thomas comes back you have 5 guys (Thomas, Cust, Werth, Sweeney, Gonzalez) for 4 positions (LF, CF, RF, DH), which is hardly too many players given the A’s health history – and arguably not too many if everyone stays healthy the rest of the season. Plus it’s exactly what we have right now with Murton instead of Werth.

How the mighty have fallen
I mean, jeez, Jason Werth is a platoon player. He’s not good in any sense of the word. And it’s a heck of a lot easier to find mediocre outfielders than it is to find mediocre pitchers.
I would question Beane’s sanity if he were to deal Blanton for Jason Werth (assuming Werth was the top player in the deal, obviously—I wouldn’t question his sanity for a Werth/Utley package…)

Platoon player, or Oakland's best hitter?
Because his .833 OPS would lead our team and his .791 career OPS – and that’s against all pitching, mind you – would be close to tied for our team lead. And he would become our best base stealer (11/12 this year, 35/40 career).
Fine if you don’t agree. But you’d “question Beane’s sanity” if he got that and, say, a nice prospect, for Blanton, who is pitching worse and worse, has a 4.95 ERA, and can likely be replaced without any dropoff by a number of candidates in house? Talk about improving now and in the future – and freeing the A’s up, if they want, to deal someone else (like Murton or Buck) to fill a need.
I realize a trade has already occurred by the time I write this, but my point is the same – you basically look at every trade idea, PT, and go “you’re crazy!” No…not really. You pretty much questioned Beane’s sanity at the Harden/Gaudin trade and I think that one is going to look great before too long.

Eh?
Not really. I think they got an excellent return for Blanton in fact.
And comparing unadjusted park OPSes really isn’t OK as a shorthand when the parks in question are Philly and Oakland. Werth would not be the A’s best hitter now or anytime.

The Philadelphia newspapers report
- Jarrod Washburn, lefthander, Seattle. Erik Bedard is the sexier name, but Washburn probably is the more realistic target. Forget Bedard’s asking price: He’s pitched six innings only once in his last six starts. Washburn (4-8, 4.83 ERA) isn’t a top-of-the-rotation guy, and hasn’t been since he went 18-6 in 2002 with the Angels, but the Phillies could view the 33-year-old as a guy who would be a solid No. 3 or No. 4. Remember, Kyle Lohse was 6-12 with a 4.58 ERA before the Phillies traded for him last season.

Remember, Kyle Lohse was 6-12 with a 4.58 ERA before the Phillies traded for him last season.
- Damaso Marte, lefthander, Pirates. The Phillies have always liked Brian Fuentes, but even if they were willing to put together a knockout package for the reliever, he has publicly said he wants to be a closer. He won’t get that chance here, which means it is unlikely the team would be able to re-sign the free-agent-to-be. Marte, on the other hand, could be available from the struggling Pirates. The 33-year-old has a career 3.18 ERA and is 4-0 with a 3.22 ERA this season, along with 44 strikeouts and only 14 walks in 44 2/3 innings. He would instantly upgrade the Phillies bullpen.
- Joe Blanton, righthander, Oakland. The Phillies saw him up close and personal in late June when he stymied them for seven innings of a 5-2 Athletics win. He’s been inconsistent over his last eight starts – 2-6 with a 6.75 ERA – but there is a lot to like about him. *
I think the last two are the more realistic. I don’t really see the Angels tinkering with their roster too much.
As for Street, I would not mind seeing him move on. I love his character and personality, but have grown weary of his lack of production.

If Philly is looking for a lefty reliever
I’m sure Embree could be made available along with Blanton.
For who, I’m not so sure. It won’t be Burrell, not because he’s too expensive but because he’s a FA after the season. If we want him, we can go after him in the offseason. There were very slight rumors that the Phils could make available Howard because of his rapidly rising price tag, his desire to continually go to arby and his low average and high age. But somehow I don’t think we get him even if we throw in Barton with Blanton and Embree. Again I think the deal should be something like Cardenas, Donald, and Freddy Galvis/Dominic Brown for Blanton and Embree.

Trading Duke
I don’t want him to be traded either, but you know what? It’s all about trading from strength. Duke is pitching great, probably over his head. His value is at an ALL TIME high. Meanwhile, we’re currently stocked with starting pitching prospects. Gio could come up now. Cahill and Anderson by April of next year. We could get a major haul for Duke, less so for Blanton. Why the hell not?

and banking on people being ready when you absolutely need them is a very bad idea. Eventually we’re going to have to start keeping some of the higher performers around of a while. You can only patch up your roster so many times before it falls apart (see ‘07).

Nico, the thing is
most of our trades have been for near-ready or ready talent and that talent has usually equalled the talent lost in the short term. Swish = Sweeney +Gio in the short term. Haren = CGon, Smith, and Eveland. Harden = Gallagher. Mulder
at the time, you could even argue Hudson = meyer.
The point is, I think Beane’s trades are not now for 3 years from now. They’re now for 6 months from now. That’s enough to get leverage (after all, the Cubs needed Harden NOW, and the DBacks needed Haren NOW, but still doesn’t sacrifice the present for the future all that much.
to simplify- before lamenting that we’re always rebuilding, ask yourself many of the last 8 seasons we’ve spent rebuilding.

Sign Duke....maybe
The only thing holding me back from screaming at the A’s for not signing him to a four year lucrative contract is his injury history. The only long term contracts the A’s have dished out turned out to be disasters. Dye was gone for his three years he signed up for and then blew up with Chicago and Chavvy is hurting next year too. I would love to sign Duke, but I wouldn’t mind a trade because of his back and hip problems.

A's don't like to hand out long contracts to pitchers
especially ones with injury histories and who are approaching or past thirty. The attrition rate for pitchers is too high.
They’ll sign someone like Hudson, Mulder, Zito or Haren to “long term” contracts that cover their already controlled years, plus a year or two of FA, but not much more than that.

I don't want the A's to trade Duke either,
but he is performing over his head this year. His BABIP is .213. That is crazy low. This is generally out of his control and will normalize to around .300 over time, so while I think he’s taken some great strides as a starter, we can’t expect this type of performance in the long run. His value is probably at an all-time high now.

I agree that he won't sustain a .213 BAPIP, but I also think
Duke is the type of pitcher who can keep his BAPIP low. A lot of his outs are routine medium or medium-deep fly balls caused by getting hitters slightly out on the front foot on the curve or cutter. He avoids the sweet spot on the bat through command and change of speeds and I think he is a rare pitcher who can get a lot of fly balls out, even medium deep ones, and sustain success because it’s happening for a very specific and sustainable reason.

FWIW
I would expect his BABIP to rise to around his career average, maybe with a little regression to the league average—so somewhere in the .270-.280 range.
He is also going to start giving up more home runs per fly ball. His performance this year has been that of a guy with a mid-3s ERA, which is very good but not this good.
