Tips for visiting Yankee Stadium?
Admittedly, I got a little excited watching the All-Star game last night, and I decided I need to make my first trip to Yankee Stadium before it closes.
Looked at the schedule, and guess who's in town this weekend? Also it's my birthday on Sunday. Serendipity.
Anyways, my limited life experience has told me that it never hurts to ask for tips from people when traveling to an unfamiliar place. Any suggestions would be welcome (things to see, seats to target, etc)
thanks all, and go a's!

I hate to say it but my trip to yankee stadium was a tremendous LET DOWN
I’ve been to 27 stadiums in my life time including such oldies as Fenway, Wrigley, and Old Tiger Stadium. Yankee Stadium is just like everything else New York – overhyped and overrated.

Wow..that is surprising...
I had the opposite feeling about being there. I figured it would be good, but it surpassed anything I expected. Fantastic atmosphere and walking in, you can just feel everything that has happened there. It’s a great place to take in a game.

Obviously it's all subjective,
I’m expressing my thoughts on it. Truly unimpressed as were the few friends I went to the game with who have also been to Fenway, Wrigley, and Old Tiger. I know it’s blasphemy in baseball circles to talk bad about Yankee Stadium or the Yankees, but that’s my story and i’m sticking to it.
Allegiance to the A’s does not factor into this as I hate the Red Sox but rank Fenway as my number one park.

I loved Wrigley also...
Wrigley is a better experience than Yankee both during and after the game, just a special place, as is Fenway. Yankee Stadium is just one of those places you want to see and that makes it great. Not necc the views or the look, but just historic…I really enjoy games there.

I can appreciate the history AND i think you nailed it on the head as
to why I like Fenway and Wrigley better. The pre-game, in-game, and post-game experience at those two places is something that can’t be recreated elsewhere. I give Old Tiger the nod because it truly felt old and that it was near falling down – now, unfortunately, it has fallen down courtesy of the ole’ wrecking ball. Truly a shame.
I always thought if they did a like 10 throw back days a year where they charged 4x as much and played in the ole’ yard that it would be pretty sweet. I was only there once, but for whatever reason it really made a lasting impression on me. I’d definitely make the trip out to Tiger to catch a game once every other year even if Detroit is a complete piece of GARBAGE.

Hey Hey
Ok, I was born and raised a NY Yankees fan. I don’t think its overrated. I think it’s so hyped because of the history. Everyone knows of all the great things that have happened there and want to see it up close and personal. That stadium is always packed with 50,000 fans. Anywhere you sit you will have a fine view of the field. Being in the bleachers is fun but it gets too hot sitting there in the summer. If you can manage to see monument park you should. Make sure to get a froozen lemonade to keep you cool :)
Oh and I’ve been there in A’s gear before…Yankee fans usually don’t see to crack on A’s fans there. The last time I was there I had a whole group of people behind me talking about Eric Chavez and how much they loved him. I was so excited lol I even had extra tickets to the game the following day and I wanted the A’s to have some fans there so I found a group of A’s fans at the game and gave them the tickets so they could join us hehe
I am biased…again, I was born and raised a Yankees fan and have been there over 100 times (I started watching the A’s about 8 years ago and became a HUGE fan right away..but I will always be a Yankees fan too. Born and Raised..sorry lol)

Jos Sheehan did a cool quick column on being at Yankee Stadium late last night when it was empty…..Really cool piece.

Just a few comments based on my experience from a long time ago
1) Don’t wear any Red Sox apparel, especially in the bleachers, if you go with someone who does, pretend you don’t know ‘em
2) If you sit in the right field, it’s really short and you are practically right over the right fielder’s head. You can really let him have it if you want.
3) Unlike most places, the home dugout is at 1st base side, and the visiting dugout is at 3rd base side, if you want to get a little closer to the visiting teams.
4) just for fun, watch for the fans in the second deck behind the home plate. Yankee stadium has a sloping net that let foul balls run up to them, depend on the speed it will go all the way up to those guys. They usually bring some kind of fishing nets (long pole with a big netted scoop at the end) to fish those foul balls. If they miss them, big time booing opportunity.

A Few Tips
1. Don’t be afraid to wear A’s gear. Strangely, nobody seemed to care about people in A’s gear. I didn’t get any rassing or anything.
2. Hit Monument Park first, as soon as you walk through the gates. The line gets long, FAST! If you get there right as the gates open you will still have plenty of time to wonder around the stadium before game time.
3. Speaking of Serendipity: If you have some time while in the city, go to a little place called Serendipity! It is on the East Side. It is super girly in its decorations, but it has the best desserts on the planet!! It has a thing called Frozen Hot Chocolate that is beyond amazing!! Way worth the side trip!

#3
guilty of loving the movie.
it’s in the plans if there’s time. it actually got closed for a while last year because of rats (sadness/grossness), but I believe it’s open again.
thanks for the tips :)

OH NO!
Why did you have to tell me that! I was there in July of last year! GAH!
I think I got really lucky on my trip last year. I was there for a week and I only saw one cockroach and it was dead. And I only saw one rat which was running around on the tracks of the subway. Considering it is NY, I was expecting much worse!
I guess all I can do is hope that rats were not an issue for Serendipity back in July. Either way, it was WAY good!

Look for the giant foam cowboy hat
which hopefully won’t be torn apart and stomped on by the 3rd inning…I’ll be flying out and repping the green and gold, like you just wanted to see the stadium before they tear it down. Friday and hopefully Sunday as well!

My sign was going to say
“Oakland Pitching Beats New York HItting”
But since the trade of Harden, I changed it to….

(like that’s gonna make it into the ballpark)

neighborhoods to see
Spend some time before the game in the neighborhood behind the center-field part of the stadium. It reminded me of the scene on Mars in the movie Total Recall.
I saw the dreaded Giants during inter-league in 2002 (Clemons VS. Bonds). Sitting in the upper reaches of the stadium with the left-field foul pole in my line of vision made for an unpleasant viewing experience. Otherwise, the crowd was into the game and the experience was pretty much all that it was cracked up to be.

I was at the Knoblauch 3-error game when he took himself out
Despite this article they came down on him like a ton of bricks with a lot of very creative language. Be ready in case someone on the Yankees has a bad performance, you might wish you weren’t there.

Sure, it has lots of history
but it’s a dump – tiny hallways. O-verated. I’ll be there Sunday too!

Beware....
Being that I always go to Yankee Stadium and Shea, Yankee Stadium is a great place, except when you’re rooting for an opposing team.
For those that said the fans don’t bother A’s fans, I have to start sitting where you sit. Because EVERY game I’ve been to (sunday will be the first A’s/Yankee game at the stadium that I will miss for the first time in I dont know how many years) I’ve gotten heckled and food thrown at me (the first time when I was 12 years old) and security even threatened to throw me out just for being an A’s fan. That is not a joke.
Yankee fans no matter what will talk trash and will even curse around kids.
Other than that it’s a great experience.
Here are some places to check out and not to check out:
DO NOT go to Stans. The place gets way too crowded.
I love Billy’s. Great atmosphere, big place. 2 years ago they upped the price of bottled beer and it was very crowded this year.
For the cheapest beer, the place next door to Billy’s has extremely cheap beer.
Or you can just walk a few blocks to the Bodega’s. There the beer is pretty much free when you compare it to the other places prices.
Be sure to have a Premio Sausge (although Shea’s Premios are better) with peppers.
Go check out BP. Depending on if you have tickets behind the dugouts, you won’t be given access there, even during BP. You’ll be relegated to hanging out field level in the outfield. But thats allright. I’ve made out fine with players like Matt Stairs, Giambi (with the A’s), Ernie Young etc… giving me baseballs.
Friday I’ll be showing up pretty much at Game Time…but let me know if anyone will be there Saturday….I should be there by 11:30 the latest…We should get ANers at one of the pubs before the game.
