Angels' Francisco Rodriguez says he will file for free agency
Francisco Rodriguez said Monday that he plans to file for free agency after the season, setting the stage for one of three prominent decisions facing the Angels this winter. Rodriguez, on pace to set the major league record for saves in a season, said he would not rule out re-signing with the Angels but would no longer consider an extension before soliciting offers from other teams. "I'm going to go out there and explore the market," Rodriguez said. "They had six years. They didn't get anything done with me. "If I wait six years, why not wait another 2 1/2 months?" He could get the richest contract ever for a relief pitcher. Rodriguez will hit free agency at 26, with the most saves in the majors over the last four seasons. -- LA Times
Angels are least popular U.S. team
Why did they need A poll? They could have just asked us?
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are the least popular U.S. team in Major League Baseball, according to the new Harris Poll conducted online by Harris Interactive. The Toronto Blue Jays ranked dead last at 30th but the Angels were right infront of them at 29th. -- Harris Interactive

is necessary to harass felllow ANers about such trivial things?

Not harassment

+1
It’s not harassment to suggest improvements. People around here are so touchy.
When I was growing up, to correct someone’s spelling was viewed as friendly help. Today it’s viewed as a personal attack.

And you could
have stated your point differently too if it was your true intent to ‘suggest improvements’ which I believe is not. Otherwise, it reads as harassment… I read AN a lot and ppl like you reply to new threads simply to be negative on any little issue.

I'm sorry
I don’t think it’s crazy to expect people posting on AN do some minor edits to make them appear more readable. I find bolding everything (especially when a whole paragraph is bold/italics) very annoying, and easy to fix. SIMILARLY, I’D MENTION IT IF THE POST WAS WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS.
by nevermoor on Jul 16, 2008 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The point is that Fan Posts, unlike comments, can be edited
And it would be very easy to select all and turn the bold/italics off. It would make the post easier to read, and demonstrates some respect for a community where pretty much everyone (except vagasgm) posts extremely high quality material.
If this had been a comment, I wouldn’t have said anything because there’s no opportunity for change. If the post had been made by someone who has been around forever, I might assume they did it intentionally. Here, however, boyblue could have fixed it in less time than he spent on his snarky response (and has admitted it was unintentional). Unless you think the post is better this way, I don’t really understand what your complaint is.

Look
first and foremost, this is a site where FANS, not highly paid baseball writers post articles. A very select few of you, and you know who the f**k you are, get on my god damn nerves picking on fanposts for trivial things. So effin what, he (yourboyblu) post something in 10 pt bold font. Get over it or put on your bleepin bi-focals.
And I agree with Jose Arredondo being groomed as the next closer. Dude’s been nothin short of filthy this year.
by sf drift king on Jul 16, 2008 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right. I don't think I've criticized the quality of anyone's writing
(except Vegasgm, and that I won’t apologize for)
What’s great about AN is it’s a site where fans put consistent effort into their posts. It makes almost every one a joy to read. The community’s practice of spending a few seconds to improve the readability of their posts is part of what makes the site special, and as such I’ll do it for mine and expect others to do it for theirs.
As far as the bifocal crack, I’m 24 and have never worn glasses. The size isn’t relevant, the inappropriate formatting is.
I’m glad we agree on Arredondo, although I hope he ends up not being the real thing for the Angels.

If something's worth saying, it's worth proofreading
And by not proofreading one’s own post, the writer basically says that he doesn’t care about his readers, and doesn’t expect (or deserve) respect in the community’s consideration of his/her ideas.

Here's the problem:
(and I think I might be one of those nitpicking people who knows who the f—k I am, so beware …)
Tossed-off no effort incoherent fanposts don’t exist in a vacuum. They push other fanposts, many of which are thoughtful and interesting, down the list. The more dreck there is, the more difficult it becomes for the community to appreciate the good stuff. Not everything graduates to the recommended section; there are plenty of worthwhile offerings in the second tier, but they disappear very quickly because navel-gazing nitwits fellow fans who can’t be bothered to give a sh*t about anything but the dumb trade they thought of in the shower that morning constantly post repetitive, pointless, shrill 80 word bundles of nothingness.
If you’re going to elbow another post a rung down the ladder, you have an obligation to try a little. Not a lot. But a little.
No one expects you to engage in extended meditation or anything before daring to contribute to the site, and if you just want to throw a thought out there without much consideration, by all means do so – it makes the exchange of ideas that much richer. But for the love of God, put it in the comments section of an existing thread, or, if no current subject fits, in the DLD.

You invoke it frequently, so I finally looked it up.
And now I feel stupid. Or maybe just ignorant. Wait, which is worse?
But hey, I guess it’s always useful to remember that beyond all the stuff you know, and know you don’t know, there exists an endless universe of stuff you don’t know you don’t know. If you know what I mean.

The truth is
that I’m wondering if the Angels are trying to effectively use and lose Rodriguez. Basically have him pitch until his arm is ready to fall off without a care to his future. They’re throwing him out there seemingly every night. They know they’re not going to re-sign him, I bet. So they’re going to squeeze every last ounce of blood from him and then let his future arm problems be someone else’s issue.
by Tyler Bleszinski on Jul 16, 2008 7:46 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
That thought just tears me up inside.
No, really. Now every time I see him pitch I’ll be hoping it’s his elbow making that popping sound instead of the catchers mitt.

i always thought was was mutual
I think F-RAUD knows he is leaving and the Angels understand, so they’re making it win-win for both side.
He gets his 60 saves to boost his free agent contract and the angels get the most out of him in his final year.

He's a willing partner in that dance
The way he’s throwing this year, he’s not leaving any ligaments in the soup bowl. He’s so over-amped this year, I get the feeling that he knows he has to put up absolute blowout numbers (at least in relatively meaningless counting stats like appearances and saves) to keep teams from being scared off by his health risks—even as he’s putting himself at greater risk by over-throwing and letting his mechanics go (further) to hell.
Whoever signs him is gonna make a big mistake; I’m hoping it’s the Angels or Yankees.

Why do people keep assuming
that the Angels not throwing $50 million down a hole… er, excuse me, sorry, throwing $50 million at Francisco Rodriguez is a good thing?
Douchebag or not, I’d be happy if they re-signed him, because every dollar they spend on him is a dollar they aren’t spending on a better upgrade. And I think he’s headed for decline or injury or both anyway.

Also, re-signing a player at a much higher rate after he whines and badmouths your team is an excellent example for the rest of the clubhouse.

Oh, I forgot something else, too
K-Rod walking gives the Angels 2 extra draft picks. And because the teams that are likely to sign him are upper-division teams, one of them will probably be in the first round.

Wait.
So are we rooting for him to succeed greatly this year, re-sign with the Angels and then have his arm fall off or are we rooting for him to have his arm fall off now or are we rooting for him to muck up the rest of this season, uninjured, thereby forcing him to scrounge back to the Angels because he can get no love elsewhere or…I’m sorry, what are we rooting for?

yes...
personally, I think that the Angels will sign him. If they don’t they have no one who could fill in. I can’t think of anyone else in the Angels bullpen who would scare me, and the Angels will probably do whatever it takes to keep him. What I did find interesting though was that I read an article about this saying that the decision to sign K-Rod or let him leave will be one of three difficult decisions for the Angels this summer. Does anyone know what the other two of those are?

His arm isn't falling off
He’s only pitched 42 innings this year, believe it or not. The season is more than halfway over. I know he seems really amped when he throws, giving the impression his arm will fall off, but really there are many people throwing harder + more innings whose arms are fine.
I hope they re-sign him, honestly. He helps me hate the angels, plus he always makes the 9th inning adventurous.
by Bretter on Jul 16, 2008 12:39 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
He has one foot out the door
Jose Arredondo is being groomed as his successor like Rodriguez was when Percival was still around.
Guy is a jerk and karma is definitely bound to bite him sooner or later, but lets not wish ill upon the guy. Thats why AN is way classier than HH.
That said, I hope we see many more shots off him like Hamiltons like walkoff last week.
by put em in a body bag johnny on Jul 16, 2008 12:44 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Agree
Only way to shut up an a—hole is to beat him. Shilling for hurt but that just gives him more time to run his mouth. But if you hit a couple of grand slams off of him (or any one), then lets see what they have to say. To paraphrase Goerge Carlin, I bet you F-Rod was not point up in the sky after Hamilton hit that walk off, was he?
