Ziggy's streak
Ok so he's at 20+ innings and counting. As you know a new Oakland record. He has a solid if not specacular .73 whip. Athletics Nation Blog Karma started it all. Other AAA players are fighting for the limited chance to Blog for AN and get there careeers started off right.
what's the record for MLB to start a career? what's the Oakland record for total innings for anyone not just to start a career?
If he goes all year without a ERA does that give him the Rookie of the year automatic? Or because he's not a starter or closer he gets ignored? At what point does this guy get recongnized in the national media? 30 innings? 40?

The God's are watching
As one who definitely believes the baseball God’s sometimes disrupt the plans of those who get too confident (ie: Billy Beane and unexplainable two years of injuries), I am very cautious about talking about Ziegler, lest he explode into small pieces and give up 12 runs one day (okay, that’s Huston Street but it could happen to Ziggy). Best we not mention his success until after the season is over….

0.75 is more than just solid. It's pretty much spectacular
In Eric Gagne’s best year his WHIP was 0.69 for the season. Others were between 0.90 and 1.00.
As has been noted here and in the media a number of times, the AL record was set by Boston’s Dave Ferriss of 22 innings in 1945, though it did come in wartime.

Here's a list of longest scoreless innings to start a career (relievers only, post-1953)
http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/shareit/wSKS
Matt Smith apparently did 22 innings, Vince Horsman did 20 innings. Brad’s almost there…

Looks like it's sorted by wrong column
(games appeared in, rather than innings.)

That list apparently isn't to start a career.
If you check Paul Foytack’s streak, it shows as coming in 56/57 but he began his career in 53.

Not sure what it's pulling for Aaron Heilman, either.
It says he has a streak from 2003 to 2005 but he was a starter in 2003 and threw about 65 innings with an ERA near 7.

a third of the way...
And doesn’t Hershiser still hold the record for most consecutive scoreless innings in a row, regardless of rookie year eligibility? I want to say he had 58.2 in a row back in the year that we need not mention. I can’t imagine Ziggy makes it that far, but it’s sure been a helluva ride so far.

Solid?
I’d say a .73 whip is pretty damn spectacular. Every 4 innings, he gives up 3 baserunners. I’ll take it.

Yeah
but on AN anything that isn’t “best in MLB history by a wide margin” is “above average.” As an example, someone was rating our team a month or so ago, put our defense as #2 in baseball, and gave it “a tic above average.”
If his WHIP was 0.5 then it would be “fine to good” and 0.1 would be “good, but unsustainable”
