Emil Brown

I wonder more and more if he will remain on the club for the remainder of the year.

A few weeks ago I assumed he would be DFA when guys like Thomas and R. Sweeney got back. I even posted that he better start learning another position to increase his value as a reserve in order to keep his roster spot.

Two days ago I thought he or Davis would be dropped. Now I am not so sure. I think the A's may trade him but I really don't think they will waive/ release him. A few weeks ago, it was R. Davis who was seeing more starts when R. Sweeney was out. Now its Brown starting the last 4 games.

Now Brown might be starting because the team is trying to boost his stats/ presence in order to trade him.

I think dropping him and keeping Murton or Davis would be pretty tough to do considering he has an advantage in many offensive categories and the fact that he has been with the guys since March. Provided he was a nice guy and positive teammate, I would think that just dropping a guy who has better stats for another wouldn't help team chemistry.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was traded, even as a throw-in. I wouldn't be surprised if he was sent to the bench, but I doubt that he will be DFA.

i honestly don't believe in team chemistry as much as some

the giants hated each other in 2002, but they were an inning away from winning a world series. you don’t have to like your teammates to succeed.

i really don’t think it matters at all that brown has been with the club since march. if there is someone better than him that we can put in there (murton? buck when he starts hitting? thomas/mike sweeney, putting cust in left) to make the team better, you do it.

Reading AN, you would think Brown was the reason the A's aren't in 1st place. I don't mind

getting rid of him, if someone was outplaying him, but Buck, Denorfia, Murton, Davis, none of them are playing better.

sure

i mean to me, it’s not a matter of brown necessarily. i just think the concept is somewhat invalid. i agree with your post though…no one is really playing better than brown out of that group.

I would only disagree about Murton

One has every reason to expect Murton to hit for a higher average, with a higher OBP, and better defense, than E. Brown. Once Thomas is back and you have Cust in the OF mix with Sweeney, Gonzalez, and Murton, I’m not sure what value Brown has – at least R. Davis is a defensive replacement for Cust and a good pinch runner. Brown is just Murton, only worse.

sure

one would expect…i just was going off of what’s happened so far. murton hasn’t been getting a ton of at-bats in the bigs this season, so there might be a catch-up period of sorts, if that makes any sense.

Sure, but that just means expect Murton

to struggle for a little bit, which he’s doing. He’s still the better player over the course of a month or half a season.

Emil Brown has been extraordinarily fortunate to have survived to this point in the season

Every time it looks like he’s finally going to be squeezed out of the outfield for good, someone else goes down with an injury (or Steve Blass disease, in Travis Buck’s case).

Like the ever popular “roster crunch” thread concept, my reaction to “release Brown” comments is “I’ll believe it when I see it.” I’ve long since lost what little confidence I had in the ability of the A’s to keep their (position) players healthy.

I refuse to consider your arguments until

until you edit the name of this “Emil Brown” back to his real name: DFA

You know what we oughta do with DFA?

We should Emil Brown him.

Hmm...

I’m unconvinced

Brown serves a role on this team.....

if you replaced him w/ a younger player, there would be not be enough ABs to go around. If the A’s DFA’d him you would probably bring up Travis Buck or Denorfia. With Gonzalez, Sweeney, Murton, Cust, and Buck or Denorfia…some young guy is riding pine, which will negatively impact their development. I have no problem with him finishing out this season with the A’s

You may be overlooking Thomas' return

We need Thomas AND Cust in the lineup to upgrade the lineup. That puts Cust, Gonzalez, and Sweeney in the OF along with Murton. No room for Brown, and his departure would not require the A’s to call up Buck or Denorfia.

A random AAA hitter

could serve that same role.

whether or not he’ll be effective…2 month off is an eternity

How soon we forget...

Brown’s 2 out hitting and RBI machine-like performance carried us to a successful first month of the season, and then he stunk it up for two months and everyone started shouting “DFA!”. Now he’s hot again, and you still want to dump him? He’s absolutely stroking the ball just about every time up, and no one else is. Which cold player would you like to replace him with?

If you're looking for a hot hitter,

why not call someone up from Midland? I bet they’re all pretty hot right now.

Or sign Jessica Alba. She’d be a hot hitter. Not good, mind you, but hot…
