Open Game Thread - Game 94: A's vs. Angels (AN Day V)
Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics, Jul 12, 2008 6:05 PM PDT
What a momentous day.
Former A's Frustrator General Rich Harden throws 5.2 shutout innings (striking out 10) for the Cubs ... and the Cubs' bullpen dramatically tried to throw the game away (SF tied it 7-7 with 5 in the 9th, before losing in extras 8-7).
The A's, coming off administering a 9-2 smackdown of the Angels last night (and closing to 4 games back in the process), have a chance to win this hugely important series going into the ASB.
And Athletics Nation gathers at the Coliseum for AN Day V.
As for the game matchup, the A's send out Dana Eveland, who hopefully will take advantage of the Angels' swingmania in the same way that Gallagher did last night. If Dana's season-long control wobbliness results in even the Angels getting a lot of walks, it could be a struggle.
The A's hitters are virtually guaranteed to struggle, as they'll be facing Ervin Santana, who has simply PWN3d the A's in his brief career.
I'll be at the game today, so (1) if someone could post lineups close to gametime, that'd be awesome, (2) I'll have continued game threads set to auto-post at 7:00 & 8:00 & 9:00, and (3) the game wrap may be a little on the late side.

All snarkiness aside about Florida,

HR power is certainly expensive, and it makes things much easier. It’s kind of like owning a car, as opposed to rent/mortgage, which is an absolute necessity; the baseball equivalent is pitching; and, yes, that makes the Rangers homeless overpass trolls. -Monkeyball

Gallagher had a sick game yesterday.
And Murton had an RBI single yesterday. So far, both the Cubs and A’s are looking okay in the Harden trade. I like that.

I would've preferred that Rich last more than 16 outs
Cubs bullpen really sucked, especially that Marmot guy who “pitched” the 9th.

But if the Cubs SS eats the ball with 2 outs, Harden gets the win.

I'm really worried that the A's like Eveland
more than they should. “Great stuff” is nice, “late movement” is a plus – but I don’t think the guy has the command to succeed. He’s fine at #5 for now but I hope he’s odd man out as the younger guys come up.

Most of ‘em are slated as solid #2-type pitchers. Sheer talent will probably overshadow Eveland’s nibbling in the not-too-distant future.

Yeah, that's the way I see it.
Cahill, Anderson, and Gio will push Blanton, Eveland, and possibly Smith out of the rotation, if Duke does indeed get a contract extension.
I dunno
Smith and Gallagher look to me like they’re in it for the long haul. Assuming Duke gets an extension, a rotation of Duchscherer, Gio, Cahill, Gallagher, and Smith with Eveland in long relief looks pretty damn good. There are some trades a-comin’ in the next few years.

The A's have the right approach
To get to Santana you have to swing early in the count.
Suzuki and Murton were thinking this but they swung at borderline pitches. I think the reason we have not hit him in the past is they take too many strikes. Someone who knows their stats can correct me if I’m wrong.

Harden's "rip"?
Is this it:
“Harden didn’t get a win, but he got a nice parting gift, a deafening standing ovation from 41,000 strong upon his exit.
“I never really had anything like that pitching in Oakland,” said Harden, who made 97 starts for the Athletics beginning in 2003. “It was really cool to see.”
In that instance, he’s probably telling the truth…
HR power is certainly expensive, and it makes things much easier. It’s kind of like owning a car, as opposed to rent/mortgage, which is an absolute necessity; the baseball equivalent is pitching; and, yes, that makes the Rangers homeless overpass trolls. -Monkeyball
If he would have stayed healthy
helped the A’s make the playoffs and actually pitch in the playoffs. He may have heard the crowd go nuts.
by asfaninpismobeach on Jul 12, 2008 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, I wouldn't call that a "rip", just telling the truth like you said
Now, if he said “A’s fans suck”, then we can get mad.
I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.
It's not a rip.
It’s just a safe and easy comment.
Look at it this way. The guy just landed in a new town. He has to say something nice about the new place. What he’s probably thinking is, “Shit, I don’t even know where I am right now.” The reporters all ask him how he feels about leaving Oakland and coming to Chicago, and they’re not going to leave till they get a good quote. He sure as heck can’t say, “You know I really loved it in Oakland. The cameraderie of the team was awesome.” Even if it’s true, and even if it doesn’t directly diss the new team/town, it’s just not appropriate to talk about how much you miss your old team.
At the same time, he doesn’t want to totally rip on the old team either, and he doesn’t really know what to say about the new team since he’s barely even settled in. Therefore, he says the most obvious, safest thing there is to say. He says how great it is to have more fans. It compliments the new place, and it doesn’t seriously insult the old place. No one can really argue, since it’s obviously true. The reporters get a quote for their story, the fans in the new town are pleased. Everyone is happy.
That’s why every player who leaves Oakland says the same thing. It’s the only good answer. What would you have them say instead?

Eveland isn’t great, but I’m not up for calling him bad. You don’t get a 3.5 ERA for nothing. His stuff is good, and he needs to control it. If he can do that, he’ll be a very good pitcher. If he can’t, he’s good right now.

who has been extremely fortunate to put up the stats he has. Joe Kennedy did it a couple years ago, Saarloos the year before that – they deserved the success they had, but no way were they going to continue it. I’m concerned that Eveland is a work VERY much in progress. He could get there, though; we’ll see.
