Open Game Thread: Game 93 - A's vs. Angels
The A's open up an important three-game series against the Angels tonight at the Coliseum. Newly acquired Sean Gallagher, the key recipient in the Rich Harden trade to the Cubs, will take the hill for the A's against Jon Garland. And in the spirit of showing off shiny new toys, Matt Murton will also make his A's debut, batting second and playing left field.
Donnie Murphy gets another start at shortstop tonight in Crosby's absence.
The 50-42 A's enter this weekend's series five games back of Anaheim. If the A's sweep this weekend, they'll be only two games back entering the All-Star break and very much in the race. If the weekend ends with the A's eight games back, I'd consider that pretty close to insurmountable.
Here's hoping Murton and Gallagher have awesome Oakland debuts. Let's go A's!

If they want a dark alternate jersey, they should keep the green one only
Now it’s four jerseys. One more is just a way to sell extra uniforms.

They’re cliche and too common.
You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all. ~Earl Weaver

It seems like every team in every sport has a black alternate uni. The green and gold is a much better look.

Foolsh, the most insane regular poster on AN since oaktoon left - salb
Gameday is quite inaccurate in a lot of ways
I’ve recently been doing some pitch tracking in an effort to get a job with this company, and I tried to use gameday as a reference and it’s pretty impossible. They use stadium guns (which are almost always amped up to make pitch speeds look faster) and they misidentify pitches a lot. In one game I did, they had Harden with sliders and splitters when he threw nothing but fastballs and changeups the whole game.

My guess on Gallagher is that
the A’s will work with him on a changeup – the A’s feel it’s a more important pitch than the breaking pitches. If he refines any sort of a changeup to go with his fastball, he won’t have to rely on so many curves he can hang.

A properly thrown breaking ball places no more stress on the arm than a fastball does.

Was Black Snake Moan a comedy or a drama?
by ohtobe21likehuston on Jul 11, 2008 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions
I've actually heard that the splitter is one of the worst on the arm, too.
I think this is one of those areas where nobody really knows, but we do know that overhand = unnatural.

by thejd44 on Jul 11, 2008 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Mostly because of the finger spacing
It adds stress on the forearm, which in turn works its way through the arm. Stress at any point on the arm from hand to shoulder will cause increased injury risk.
Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?
Depends on a lot of things
Slurves aren’t good, they involve some twisting of the wrist to get the extra side-to-side break which places added stress on the arm. Same with people who hook their wrists when throwing a curveball, added stress. A 12-6 curveball with a follow through like a fastball (i.e. the wrist isn’t still pointed towards 1st base for a RHP) will not hurt the arm anymore than a fastball.
Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?
Exactly
I’d also expect them to add a two-seamer; he already has a great fastball and if he added a little movement in situations where he needs a ground ball, that would be excellent.
Prince: This bores me. Is anyone up for a game of basketball?
