I don't know if he's capable of going 3 innings,
but I’d love to see Ziggy pitch the 8th when Vlad comes up. Please not Embree-Vlad…

I don't like the combination of
3 innings plus starting off with two lefties. I’d definitely go with Embree here.
The A's colors are green and gold.
Do. Not. Even. Joke.
I think I just got Hives thinking about Embree facing Vlad.

Seriously folks, Ziggy is awesome
He throws almost all strikes, and no one can hit them.
The A's colors are green and gold.

I think bringing Embree in here is fine,
but I’d rather see him pitch to the first two hitters and then…Well, your choices would probably be Casilla, Foulke, Street for more than an inning.

The problem is
that the choice was between Foulke and Embree and sadly, I would probably take Embree.
Then again, Casilla would’ve been my first choice.

Foulke has been better this year.

I'd say Gaudin
Casilla has been shaky since his return from the DL.
Foulke doesn’t throw hard so he seems more hittable. The problem: People just crush Embree on a fairly consistent basis.

you're totally right. Geren's move worked brilliantly.
Oh wait, Embree sucked ass and was getting banged around like a screen door.
So you think Embree should have pitched the 8th inning, am I right?
First to a guy who hits lefties better than righties
Then to a switch hitter
THEN to the best hitter on the team, who is a righty?
yes, I do
And to the extent that is wrong, was their an obviously better choice? No. Ziggy had already pitched two innings and isn’t good against lefties. Foulke is just worse than Embree overall. Same with Brown. Casilla has struggled coming off an injury. And the matchups were good for the A’s even aside from all of that. Hence the stupidity of your remarks.
The A's colors are green and gold.

three Geren decisions I 100% disagree with
1. Letting Embree pitch to Vlad - just a bad percentage move all the way ‘round. Yes, I hate IBBs almost as much as I hate playing the infield in (#2) - but walking Vlad was absolutely what should have been done there.
3. Taking Embree out after the GA HR. I have never understood the conventional-wisdom reasoning that says to trust a pitcher in low-percentage-of-success situations, set him up to fail, and then take him out when there’s nothing at stake and he has a decent chance of just finishing the inning.
He's a very personable, sweet, nice chimp. He's not going to be aggressive unless he's provoked. @('.')@

Embree no longer has the 8th, I'm guessing
But the truth is that there weren’t any good choices. Casilla has been awful since coming off the DL. Gaudin, Foulke, and Brown aren’t special. So he didn’t have any real choice.
That said, I also hate the idea that Embree should have the 8th. I’d have handled it hitter by hitter. In a game this important, there’s nothing wrong with that.
Gaudin has been great all year
He should own that eighth inning.
by Tyler Bleszinski on Jul 1, 2008 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions
Nobody should "own" the 8th inning
That’s the problem—that kind of thinking. Except for your closer, you should just match your bullpen to the situation. It’s not just one-out lefties who should be used that way.
Hey good thing Geren took out our best hitter in case someone gets on!

Exactly. The team has to score more than 3
Yes, Embree is the goat but overall the offense is still the major problem.
Still. We have scored a combined 3 runs in the last starts of Harden and Duke
The pen is pretty thin right now. I'm not sure there are a lot of options rather than Embree.
Ziegler wasn’t really an option.
You must not have seen Sunday's game
The only other guys would have been Casilla or Foulke. None appeal to me much.

That's a backbreaker
Wasting a Harden start with a late-innings loss due to mismanagement. I am not optimistic about taking this series.
Ryan Sweeney: I probably irrationally embraced him before you did.
Adding to that.
Harden didn’t even have his best stuff tonight. It was more impressive that he worked through it. Pitiful that he can go 5 innings with nothing, and embree can’t go 1 with everything.
What about Barry?
"Barry who?" Forst said, and I felt like I was in the middle of a knock-knock joke.
How about walking Vlad?
Instead of letting him tie it up? Maybe snag a dp?
okay, when's the next game?
Tomorrow? Okay, forget this one.

At least the 9th was quick (though not painless).
No Tease.

alright guys
i think i have a fundamental understanding of mojo adjusting in terms of pitching. But Embree apparently doesnt respond to it.
If Geren is going to make bone-head moves in July....
...what’s he going to pull in September? Can you imagine if this was the last week of September?
A's, baby!
LMAO @ Garrett Anderson
For blaming his strikeout in his AB before the homer on a beachball. His exact words, “I saw the kid running on the field and I couldn’t hit once I saw that.”

Another LMAO!
One of the Fox Sports SoCal studio guys says K-Rod getting 40 saves before the All-Star break is, “a done deal”. He has 33 as of tonight with 11 games to play (only 1 day off). While it’s possible, I’d hardly call it “a done deal”.
That's baseball for you.
Embree has done quite well for us for a long time now, and has made Geren look brilliant on numerous occasions. He was due for a downer of an outing, and it’s not Geren’s fault. It’s just the law of averages. No blames for anyone, because Geren hardly ever gets credit for Embree doing well. We’ll get them tomorrow. Go A’s!
I musta been "blinky thinged"
what are these brilliant mirages of Embree innings of which you speak?

Time and time again
on numerous occasions in the 8th inning, and a lot of last year in the 9th. Some games just weren’t meant to be. It happens.

last year counts for this year?

Uh, that interview, I'm having some problems here
Would it be so hard to ask him about the decisions in the 8th? You want to be nice to kids like Jaymee Sire or whatever her name is, but come on make an effort. This is the major leagues. Can’t we get a major league interview from this Comcast team.
Uh, No
You want to be nice to kids like Jaymee Sire
I’d prefer she was fired. If we’re going to have a chick asking stupid f-ing questions, she should be way hotter.

Baron Davis going to the Clippers...Geren blowing the game for the A's...
What’s next? Texas sweeping the Yankees? The Giants winning a home game? My world is falling apart!
A's, baby!
And don't forget...
Soon as they finish that stadium in LA the Raiders will be gone, too. Cranky McFeeble “commitment to eggsalad” Davis will be out the door with money flowing from all pores.

Do we need Embree??
I know a team can never have enough bullpen help but with Ziggy and the boys….Embree better step things up. Easy to say after he S!$ the bed like tonight I guess.

Barton and this anemic offense
is as bad as Embree. Somehow, Billy needs to acquire some offense. I have no ideas on who is realistically available, but it just seems apparent when Barton, Sweeney, and Suzuki come up in the ninth and you have no hope of any of them hitting a home run.
Embree The Great!
I knew once he (Embree) came in the game it was over for the A’s. I think Geren is blowing in the wind. BLOW OUT OF HERE!!!
When AE came in...
I turned to my wife and said, “What is Geren doing? We’re not up by five? Game over, we lose.“
Unfortunately, I was right.
I think I just verp’d. That annoying vomity-burp.

Don't give up on Embree
One bad game does not a career or season make.
Career Totals 36 40 4.49 814 4 0 0 25 - 720.1 687 389 359 87 19 262 655
We don’t need another bat. Frank will be back soon.
This loss really hurts
After ziggy gave 2 perfect innings and Elly gave us the lead to have AE give up 3 big ones just makes me want to vomit repeatedly on myself…....yick!
What's upsetting...
...is that it’s a game against your rivals and your 6 outs away from being only 2.5 out. Why not go for broke. Throw everybody in to get those outs. Don’t leave some poor guy out there to get shelled when he doesn’t have it. I don’t think it’s not too early to say every game counts now.
A's, baby!

Agreed…this is a momentum game as well. Every game against your rival and division leader should be played as such. Frustrating!

Having Embree pitch is one thing
But someone explain why you would A) pitch to Vlad and B) have the infield in.
Just plain dumb is all I can say.

I wonder where I could purchase a Geren jersey…..urp…urp…urp.

Voice of reason here.
It’s ONE GAME people! It’s July 1st! It’s a marathon, not a sprint! The A’s will win tomorrow, Dana Eveland will pitch a gem, and order will be restored. We have won funky games from the Angels (the sulk off) so maybe it was their turn. See you all tomorrow, and for goodness sakes, calm down! We still have half a season left!
by A'sfansince1970 on Jul 1, 2008 10:11 PM PDT reply actions
Yeah it's one game but
A game we needed and should have won.
It’s one thing to lose 11-1 to the Giants even though worthless Blanton was pitching but it’s another to blow a game with suspect managerial decisions. Yes, we are fans on a message board but even a deaf, dumb and Blind mute would have to common sense to walk Vlad and failing that, not have the field drawn in. Hindsight is 20/20 but I and many others wondered why he didn’t walk Vlad before it happened.
Would Ziggy pitching another inning have hurt?
He was very economical so I doubt it
There are many more games left but if you consider Blanton pitching every 5th start then we need to win 3 games with the other starters to compensate.
Fire Geren Now......
Light Embree on fire!! Embree, Geren: You have now achieved sucktatude status.
