My Chat With Tyson Ross
Hey AN, thought you might be interested to read what Oakland's second pick yesterday, Tyson Ross, had to say about being drafted by his hometown team. Also, he reveals why he has such an unorthodox follow-through on his delivery.
Basically, Ross is a shortstop on the mound. He never changed his throwing motion from the time he was an infielder, and throws the same way when he toes the rubber now.
You can read the full interview here.
In my communication with Ross, I was impressed -- as the scouts said in his draft report, this is a character guy with great mental makeup.

Ryan Armbrust: Has anyone tried to change your mechanics?Tyson Ross: People have always said I throw funny, and attempted to change my mechanics, but it has worked so well for me so far I just have to believe "if it ain’t broke, dont fix it."
Makes me wonder if the A’s ask him to change his mechanics, he will or not.

I'm sure it'll be a different story when a professional team...
...paying you money is telling you to do it instead of a college coach.

If he can learn to use his legs more to generate drive, look the hell out.

Arm Action - he'd better change
His arm action is absolutely atrocious. For his health, he better change. Here’s Tyson Ross compared to Mark Prior’s unprecedented arm action (the vertical Inverted W):

And Tyson Ross:

Taking the elbow above the acromial (shoulder) line in an Inverted W (Paul Nyman’s term) causes serious shoulder impingement and causes the arm to be late at footstrike, which also causes the arm to lay back in external rotation (normal) much more violently (not normal). This will unnecessarily stress the Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL), which is the ligament replaced in Tommy John surgery.
There is a lot more to dislike about this kid than his followthrough (which looks okay). It’s his ugly arm action and timing flaws. Ugh.
