DLD 060608: Mmmm, Doughnuts…
Customers can stop by participating Krispy Kreme retailers and get a free doughnut! Stan Parker, Krispy Kreme Senior VP of Marketing, says:
Whether it's a cruller or a Hot Now Original Glazed, we are providing the community with a small gift of thanks.
National Doughnut Day, always observed on the first Friday of June, honors the Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I.
The original Salvation Army Doughnut was first served by Salvation Army in 1917. During WWI, Salvation Army "lassies" were sent to the front lines of Europe. These brave volunteers made home cooked foods, and provided a moral boost to the troops. Often, the doughnuts were cooked in oil inside the of the metal helmet of an American soldier. The American infantrymen were commonly called doughboys. Salvation Army lassies were the only women outside of military personnel allowed to visit the front lines. Lt. Colonel Helen Purviance is considered the Salvation Army's "first doughnut girl".

The Angels are in town tonight. All three games will be televised! Here’s hoping the Angels fall into a fiery pit of doom. I’ve always been more of a Devil man myself:

Tonight yes, Saturday no
Games are on Ch. 21 which is cable Ch. 7 there.

Interesting that Chico, Medford and Eureka seem to get almost all of the Ch. 36 games. Sacramento, Reno and Salinas are notably less diligent about televising.

Did anybody see the rays-sox game/fight last night?
Coco Crisp had a dirty slide 2 nights ago on a sb attempt and his first at-bat yesterday he was plunked. He charged the mound and both he and the Picher swung and missed before Crisp was mobbed by rays infielders. it was actually kind of funny. Crisp said that they were pulling his hair in the pile. It would have been better (for tv, not players) if they landed the punches on the mound.

I actually learned something from Keith Law today. So the A's would have had to
get permission from Smoak if he had fallen, or is this just concurrent years?
Pete (Chicago): You said that Fields would have had to consent to re-selection by the Braves. Is that just a courtesy, or are players allowed to say that they don’t want to be re-selected by a team? Keith Law: (2:44 PM ET ) It’s not a courtesy – the player must consent.

The one that really hit me there on GBNF was the news that Bob Wilkins has Alzheimer’s. I remember Creature Features so clearly—the theme song, with the cheesy monster clips; Bob Wilkins smoking his cigar, trying not to laugh at the ridiculous movies. People could just end up on tv, even in the 1970s, who hadn’t set out to become famous.

Two Power Ranking updates...
A’s move up to #7 in both:
Bobby Crosby, who’s missed 213 games over the past three seasons, is the only A’s player to play in all 60 games so far.
SI.com – John Donovan Power Rankings
Oakland Athletics
I can now acknowledge, as I did partly with the Cards, the distinct possibility that this team not only might be legit as is, but that it could improve as the year progresses. Really, there’s every reason to believe the A’s will get better. They have a big hurdle this weekend in a three-game set against the Angels. Oakland is weak in the West (7-11). But they own the East and Central so far. And this team can score, too.
Of course, they have the Halos ranked #2 or #3, but that will change after the A’s sweep them this weekend.
;-)

Suspensions and Injuries Galore
An MRI on Jacoby Ellsbury’s wrist came back negative, and the rookie could be available to pinch-run tonight.Ellsbury suffered a strained right wrist while making a diving catch on Thursday. It looks like there’s a shot that he’ll be back this weekend.
MLB suspended second baseman Akinori Iwamura three games for his role in the altercation during Thursday’s game.Willy Aybar will start at second base when Iwamura serves his suspension.
MLB suspended outfielder Carl Crawford four games for his role in the altercation during Thursday’s game.Crawford did deserve to be punished after delivering his some blows when Coco Crisp was on the ground, but his penalty seems a little severe given the rest of the punishments of 2008. The Rays will give Jonny Gomes and Justin Ruggiano starts in the outfield when Crawford sits out.
MLB suspended RHP Edwin Jackson five games for his role in the altercation during Thursday’s game. He’ll have a start pushed back one day. No big deal.
MLB suspended outfielder Jonny Gomes five games for his role in the altercation during Thursday’s game.James Shields suspension is technically longer, but Gomes received the harshest punishment among Rays players and deserved so. Given his histroy, he could have gotten an additional one to three games.
MLB suspended RHP James Shields six games for his role in the altercation during Thursday’s game.Shields admitted to throwing at Coco Crisp and might have earned himself an extra game as a result. Still, he’ll just have a start rearranged around an off day. If the league wanted him to miss a full turn, it would have suspended him for nine games.
MLB suspended first baseman Sean Casey three games for his role in the altercation during Thursday’s game. But he’s like the nicest guy in the league. Casey will probably wait to serve his suspension until Manny Ramirez is healthier.
MLB suspended LHP Jon Lester five games for his role in the altercation during Thursday’s game. It’s unclear what this is about. Perhaps Lester was involved in the brawl, but it wasn’t clear from the highlights. If this is a result of him later hitting Carl Crawford with a curveball, then it’s bogus. Still, it only means he’ll have a start pushed back by a day.
MLB suspended outfielder Coco Crisp seven games for his role in the altercation during Thursday’s game.Richie Sexson charged the mound after not even being hit by a pitch and threw his helmet at the pitcher. He got five games. Crisp got hit by a pitch that was obviously intentional and then charged the mound about with neither helmet not bad in hand. It makes absolutely no sense that his suspension is longer than Sexson’s. Seven games isn’t an unreasonable number, but just a little bit of consistency from the league office would be nice.
