DLD 6-5-8 - Draft Day and Dad

Just a little bit till the 2008 First Year Player Draft begins, and the first pick has already been made. Lets just hope that the Devil Rays don't draw it out and take the entire time to announce it.

The St. Petersburg Times  reports that the Rays will take high school SS Tim Beckham with the No. 1 pick in Thursday's draft.
Perhaps because of Dioner Navarro's strong showing this year, lessening the need for a catcher in Buster Posey, the Rays will apparently go with the Beckham, a five-tool player who is said to have plenty of baseball smarts and superstar upside. It might also have something to do with Posey supposedly floating $12 million as his asking price.

Meanwhile, Dad was released by the Cinci Reds.

Reds released first baseman Scott Hatteberg.
Designated for assignment last week to make room on the roster for Jay Bruce, Hatteberg would be a good fit as a platoon starter or bench bat on a number of teams. The Mariners were said to be interested a few days ago and could partner him with Richie Sexson at first base.

Could he join the Mariners, probably. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Just don't bring him back, Billy =/

Who the A's will take is up for speculation , but there are some notes of interest.

• A's minor league pitcher Fautino De Los Santos probably faces nine to 12 months of rehabilitation after undergoing elbow-ligament-replacement surgery last week, Forst said.

De Los Santos, a right-hander acquired in the trade that sent Nick Swisher to the Chicago White Sox, is considered one of the A's top prospects. Forst stressed De Los Santos had no history of elbow problems with Chicago.

"He pitched (April 24) and was throwing 96 (mph), and then he went out to throw his side and couldn't pick up his arm, so it was pretty sudden," Forst said.

• Third baseman Eric Chavez did not play Wednesday because his legs were a little stiff, but Manager Bob Geren said Chavez's back felt OK after a home-plate collision Tuesday.

Good luck Fautino, see ya next year.

Love's First Kiss...is this camera on?

The Seattle lesbian kiss imbroglio has reached the front page of cnn.com. For those coming in late, supposedly SafeCo Field staff ordered a lesbian couple to stop kissing in the stands, after getting a fan complaint, while not similarly scolding hetero couples kissing nearby. SafeCo staff say they enforce their code of conduct without regard to orientation.

This was a more compelling tale of injustice (and perhaps it still is) before I read this part:

“(Sirbrina Guerrero) was a contestant on the MTV reality show “A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila,” in which women and men compete for the affection of a bisexual Internet celebrity.”

By the way, I saw the Seattle Lesbian Kiss Imbroglio play at a grunge bar back in the day; they rocked!

Don't blame me, I voted for oaktoon.

what kills me about that story:

Heaven forbid a mother’s child should see two women kissing – then the mother would have to actually EXPLAIN what was going on to their kid. Why bother doing that, when you can ask the usher to make them stop? Thats MUCH easier than teaching your child about the world around them.

Six you're still in a safe zone.

I’ve already had to have a rather uncomfortable conversation with my elder son (10) about why two men were ‘walking like that’ (arms around each others waists).

I’ve a different perspective on this, and definitely don’t think it should be a matter of law. It should be a matter of politeness (and, no, I don’t kiss my wife in public either).

Why didn't you just say,

“Because they’re men who love other men”?

Serious question.

by PaulThomas on Jun 5, 2008 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess that also shows where you're coming from

The key word here is ‘uncomfortable’. Why was it uncomfortable? Is your son picking up picking up something from society (or family) that such interactions are ‘wrong’ (versus different/unusual)? If so, that’s probably worthy of a serious (and quite likely uncomfortable) conversation.

Excessive/obscene PDA is one thing, but implying that it’s impolite to express affection in public is another …

Early Father's Day Present

I accompanied my 11-year-old special needs daughter and helped chaperone her classmates (six) to the game yesterday along with the rest of her elementary school’s fifth graders (about 80). All had a GREAT time (except for the parent(?) who told a segment of the sometimes raucous (but not inappropriately so) students who were chanting “LET’S GO CROS-BY!”, “LET’S GO BRO-OWN!” and so forth, to “Knock it off!”).

WTF? It’s a baseball game, fer cryin’ out loud!

Got to see Ziggy and C. Gonzalez for the first time. Ziggy’s tall but looks even taller rockin’ the high socks. He walks with a slow, relaxed gait that gives the impression of quiet confidence. Gonzalez’ bases-clearing double was smoked and cut between the Tigers’ CF and LF (who weren’t playing that far off) like a laser-guided scalpel. They simply could not catch up to the ball.

Anyways, halfway through the game after being sated with pepperoni pizza and a chocolate malt, my scooplette looks up at me and says, “Thanks for coming today, Dad. It wouldn’t be a baseball game without you.” Then she placed my arm around her shoulders and hugged me real tight. {sniff}

Great story, IC

How the heck does a ballpark-goer turn around and tell some exuberant kids to quiet down? Classy.

Glad you and your daughter had a great, memorable time.

Thanks for the sweet tale

Last weekend my wife, her sister and her sister’s daughter, my niece, decided they were flaking on our previous plans to go to this Saturday’s fireworks game. So I put it to my kids: do you still want to go, even without your Mom, Aunt, and fave cousin…just with me and Uncle Aphid?

Resounding yes. Though they did extort a commitment to cotton candy out of the deal.

Harden hurt again?

Rich Harden is no longer listed as facing Santana on Sunday on the A’s website, and I believe he was as early as yesterday. It is now Eveland following Blanton and Smith against the Angels. I have not read or seen anything about this anywhere else, but I think it is very curious

Gonzalez, De Los Santos, Anderson, Cahill, Simmons...the best rotation in baseball....in, uh 2010.

by J Mack on Jun 5, 2008 12:57 PM PDT reply actions

it's always been listed as Eveland on the A's website

it’s been discussed in several different threads on AN. Yesterday, Santana was listed to pitch against the A’s on both Saturday and Sunday. Don’t know if that has been corrected today. Too lazy to look.

was to sell Melillo for cash, then use THAT money to pay for Jemile Weeks’ signing bonus, so that he could THINK of Weeks as being “under slot.”

Hatteberg

I could see the Mariners picking up Hatteberg. He’s got local connections and a bit of name recognition. He’s a good fit for the company image, and if he can hit better than Sexson, well that’s an added bonus. I’m sure the Mariners would be Hatteberg’s first choice.

programming note

I finally got around to watching “The Zen of Bobby V” which I TIVOed on ESPN a few weeks ago. Not sure if it will be replayed, but if you see it listed, I’d recommend taping it. Not so much for the Bobby Valentine angle, but it does show lots of neat documentary footage of the absolutley crazy Japanese baseball fans and the Japanese baseball league in general. I found it very interesting.

Regardless of the Rays' issues with Coco Crisp

that was really dumb to have James Shields throw at him in the second inning. They could have waited to settle that matter until later.

One thing Shields can’t do is throw a punch.

by Soaker on Jun 5, 2008 3:44 PM PDT reply actions

Both HPBs (Pedroia and Crisp's replacement) scored

Guess the runs were conceded to send a message. Coco did have it coming though … you don’t make that nasty of a slide and not expect some inside pitches later …

by Rickeyfan on Jun 5, 2008 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I have no problem with drilling Crisp

...just didn’t think it should have been done with Shields’ 27th pitch of the game. You could have done it with his 108th pitch instead. Plus, as you suggest, I don’t like the intentional HBP to the leadoff hitter in the inning. Try to find a 2-out situation for that.
