Open Game Thread: Game 79 (cont.)
Thanks to an opportunistic three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, the A's lead the Giants 4-1 as we head to the top of the seventh.

agree with this assessment
he’s done some game-savers, like Seattle. And many other clutch plays.
His errors have not cost the A’s any game yet.

On paper he's worse
ZR of .818, compared to .870 in 2007, .855 in 2006 and .867 in 2005
UZR is 21 runs below average at mid-year, where he’s been above average before, sometimes gold glove caliber.
I’ve seen him dive at some balls that aren’t that far from him.
I suspect slippage.

I was musing the other day about the AL West
they ought to bring in two new teams to the AL West, expansion teams at Portland and Sacramento. Send Texas to the AL Central.
The two expansion clubs would at least have each other to beat up on. And, they would have Seattle to pick on a little.

Never told this story before but it's the reason I don't like Crosby.
After AN Day IV, I was in the airport sporting A’s gear when Jason Kendall’s in-laws approached me. They said that Crosby didn’t like Billy Beane at all and that he was really pissed off that BB wanted him to attend A’s games while he was injured. He apparently thought he should be able to stay at his home in LA. I always thought that a “team” player would hang with the team regardless of an injury.
Oh well… he is having a good year and I’m coming around on actually “liking” him.

I guess Jason was given the option of grooming Kurt Suzuki and he was not
interested. They had just got back from house-sitting and baby-sitting their grandchildren and gave up a lot of inside information about the A’s. Apparently they shared dislike for BB and that is why it came up. No big deal but it just pissed me off.

If it's an extended injury, there's no real good reason to go with the team everywhere
Especially because travel often causes negative effects on injured body parts.
On the other hand, I’m sure Beane wanted him around for monitoring purposes and not just to hang around the other guys.

The thinking of people here about Street is really incongruous
There’s a strong (and incorrect) belief by many that he’s not worthy of being a closer, but when he’s brought in for an “easy” save situation, people don’t think he should be in for that, either. Isn’t this the exact situation you want your so-called mediocre pitcher to come into the game?

I would've been ok with Ziggy pitching the 9th
Just to save Street’s arm and give his groin a little more rest. By general question, all sarcasm aside, is basically, “When is the right time to put him in?” since it seems there’s always a complaint about him coming into the game.
He’s been a lot better this year than his ERA would indicate. A couple terrible outings and a bunch of great ones, to me, is better than a closer who is giving up a run or two on a regular basis.

I think a closer should be able to pitch everynight. Anytime were three two or one run ahead. And he hasn’t pitched more than one inning the night before, i don’t see why he can’t pitch 20 pitches a night.

Nah, just bleacher talk
IMO, everyone knows it’s a tough job being closer, and we just whine ‘cause that’s what fans do.
If we knew something the team didn’t, we wouldn’t be here at the keyboards!

I am a big fan of Street
I don’t know why everyone is so down on him. He has had a few bad games but overall a great pitcher.
In general, I like the style of bull-pen of the 1970s and 80s when you might have 2-3 guys who would close out a game. I mean if a guy pitched a good a nice inning in the 8th they would let him pitch the 9th.
Today’s style of closer where someone would just pitch the 9th, no matter how close I don’t think is the most effective but just about every team does it this way.

sprtsnwyn emailed me the other day mentioning the upcoming
matchups and we determined that Lackey will miss both series against the A’s, while Harden will pitch against them both times. That ain’t half bad.

The team will only get better in the upcoming weeks
Thomas, Devine and M. Sweeney will be back soon. The veteran hitters were some of our most productive guys and their experience on the road in the pennant chase will be great.
I also am happy to see Suzuki come of age, Crosby is getting better and so is R. Sweeney provided he is not hurt too badly.
Cust is in a slump but Brown is doing better.
Overall, the pitching has been great and the hitting will improve dramatically once the team gets healthier.

The team has been so fun to follow this year
Haren was a great loss but Kendall, Kotsay and Swisher have been more than replaced with some other guys (Suzuki, R. Sweeney, Gonzalez). Now if we can get everyone healthy and some others going we will be in it at the end.
If we were in NL we would probably start printing playoff tickets

His control was wretched in that KC game, but the Royals were helpful and swung at quite a few pitches well out of the strike zone. If he pitches like that again, the A’s will pwn him.

Dana Eveland is Barry Zito
The guy falls behind most batters. When he does get ahead, his 0-2 pitches are 18 inches out of the strike zone and the batters don’t even think of swinging. When the batters do swing, few of them hit the ball very hard. The fielders behind the guy play fabulous defense, again and again. Eveland is Zito I tell you.
Wouldn’t it be nice if Eveland won 100 games for he A’s, then signed with the Giants and sucked?

Fabulous defense?
I beg to differ. The Giants’ defense was better than the A’s was in this game.
As for your comment on Cust, dude, how many times do we have to go through this before people learn? He’s in one of his cold spells. That’s it. He’s not “done” every time he only gets 2 hits in a week.
And speaking of defense, he should have had a single if Ray Durham hadn’t had the ball bounce right into his glove…

Very Fun to Beat the Giants Again and Again
Kind of worried about how poorly the A’s hit against another crappy pitcher. Cust looks horrible up there. Is there another regular DH in baseball hitting .235? Does anybody have the stat for Hannahan getting the run home from 3rd base with less than two outs? He seems awfully reliable in that role.

I don't think Correia is as crappy as he's made out to be
He’s a young back-of-the-rotation guy who may be better suited to the bullpen (he seems to lose something after 3-4 innings), but he has decent stuff/potential. He’s not good but he’s not awful, IMO.
