Open Thread: Game 78 - A's vs. Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies at Oakland Athletics, Jun 26, 2008 12:35 PM PDT

Welcome to another day of Oakland A’s baseball! Your usual Thursday front page writer is busy being a daddy of twins, so I will be your host for the rubber game of the series.

Rich Harden will take the mound for the A’s today, coming off a great start in which the bullpen collectively fell apart and took away his win, giving him his sixth no-decision of the year. Harden is sporting a nifty 4-0 record, with a 2.44 ERA, and he looks to continue his dominance today against the Phillies.

The A’s offense, which was collectively shut out in last night’s contest, will face RHP Adam Eaton, fresh off being pounded by the Angels.

Despite rumors to the contrary, Chavez is in the lineup as the DH, placing Cust in the outfield. Rob Bowen earns a rare start today, working in the battery with Rich Harden.

For the Phillies:

Rollins, SS
Utley, 2B
Burrell, LF
Howard, 1B
Dobbs, 3B
Victorino, CF
Werth, RF
Jenkins, DH
Ruiz, C

And your 2008 Oakland Athletics!

Ellis, 2B
Sweeney, R, RF
Cust, LF
Chavez, DH
Crosby, SS
Hannahan, 3B
Gonzalez, CF
Barton, 1B
Bowen, C

LET'S GO!

Have I missed any news on Frank Thomas?

Is he still on schedule to come back after the series against the Giants?

by Tyler Bleszinski on Jun 26, 2008 11:56 AM PDT reply actions

Nope, he's coming to Anaheim with the team

But won’t be activated until the ASB

So, bring on Bonds! Or, not... then, bring back Langerhans!! -One won lost one

Chavvy has said having to throw

while playing defense is causing his shoulder pain….wonder if the A’s plan on checking up on this more closely?

by OaklandSi on Jun 26, 2008 12:01 PM PDT reply actions

Could he play 1B for a few games as opposed to DH??

Not as many throws at 1B. Hannahan at 3B. Cust out of outfield to DH (until Thomas gets back). Hopefully, by then Chavez will be able to go back to 3B.

by Yellowhorse on Jun 26, 2008 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions

new infield scheme

Play Rajai at SS—whenever Chavvy catches a ground ball, he hands it to Rajai, who runs the ball across to first to beat the runner.

roster with M. Sweeney and Frank

Can someone please remind me what two position players are now on the roster but weren’t when the A’s were carrying three DH’s? In other words, if Frank and M. Sweeney came back today, who would go?

by sacto on Jun 26, 2008 12:03 PM PDT reply actions

Only position player I can think of is Donnie Murphy...

by Poppy on Jun 26, 2008 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Carlos Gonzalez is one, I think.

If Frank comes back, there’s no need to bring M Sweeney back.

by Monday Fan on Jun 26, 2008 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions

That is correct CarGon was at AAA

Chavvy was on the 60 day DL, and Buck went down all at the same time

by A'sfaninNC on Jun 26, 2008 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Roster stuff

Carlos Gonzalez is on the roster now, but was not on the roster then. Eric Chavez is on the roster now, but was not on the roster then. Rajai Davis is on the roster now, but was not on the roster then

Murphy is the back-up shortstop/second baseman. Hannahan is the back-up third baseman/first baseman.

Assuming no injuries and stints on the DL, either Rajai Davis or Emil Brown will be in the hot seat when Thomas comes back. Unless the A’s send down CarGo.

by richwol1 on Jun 26, 2008 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Rajai was definitely on the roster then...

He has been with the A’s since late April…way before Frank and Sweeney went DL.

I eagerly await the day

When Crosby and Chavez are no longer taking swings for the A’s. I just can’t take it anymore.

so u just want them

to step in the batters box and take every pitch? I dont think thats going to work out well for them and their careers.

by sourstuff on Jun 26, 2008 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions

It might be best for Chavez if

they told him he could only swing at two pitches per at bat no matter what.

ok, my mlb.tv is waaaay behind

Because when you posted that, I still had 2 pitches left in the Miley Cyrus at bat.

OT Rhetorical Question

How many people are going to show me the Gatorade (I’m guessing, since it’s the only product I spot in the video) ad with the ball girl doing her best Bo Jackson impression to catch the foul ball? Every single time it’s “Oh my god, this play is awesome” as if ANY minor league baseball game has 17 different camera angles. Come on people.

Did you see the side by side

comparison they had last night between Carlos Beltran’s swing and C-Gon’s? It looked almost identical.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Jun 26, 2008 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions

It would have been a better comparison to show Beltran at age 22

He was a little slimmer then and his body type was almost exactly the same as Gonzalez’s.

Only difference I saw was PC releasing his left hand through his swing

Yeah

they literally lined them up side by side and went through in slow motion and the only difference looked like the uni.

Is there an update on Swooney yet?

Do we know exactly what’s wrong with his leg/foot/ankle?
