Open Thread: Game 78 - A's vs. Phillies
Philadelphia Phillies at Oakland Athletics, Jun 26, 2008 12:35 PM PDT
Welcome to another day of Oakland A’s baseball! Your usual Thursday front page writer is busy being a daddy of twins, so I will be your host for the rubber game of the series.
Rich Harden will take the mound for the A’s today, coming off a great start in which the bullpen collectively fell apart and took away his win, giving him his sixth no-decision of the year. Harden is sporting a nifty 4-0 record, with a 2.44 ERA, and he looks to continue his dominance today against the Phillies.
The A’s offense, which was collectively shut out in last night’s contest, will face RHP Adam Eaton, fresh off being pounded by the Angels.
Despite rumors to the contrary, Chavez is in the lineup as the DH, placing Cust in the outfield. Rob Bowen earns a rare start today, working in the battery with Rich Harden.
For the Phillies:
Rollins, SS
Utley, 2B
Burrell, LF
Howard, 1B
Dobbs, 3B
Victorino, CF
Werth, RF
Jenkins, DH
Ruiz, C
And your 2008 Oakland Athletics!
Ellis, 2B
Sweeney, R, RF
Cust, LF
Chavez, DH
Crosby, SS
Hannahan, 3B
Gonzalez, CF
Barton, 1B
Bowen, C
LET'S GO!

Have I missed any news on Frank Thomas?
Is he still on schedule to come back after the series against the Giants?

Nope, he's coming to Anaheim with the team
But won’t be activated until the ASB
So, bring on Bonds! Or, not... then, bring back Langerhans!! -One won lost one

Chavvy has said having to throw
while playing defense is causing his shoulder pain….wonder if the A’s plan on checking up on this more closely?
Could he play 1B for a few games as opposed to DH??
Not as many throws at 1B. Hannahan at 3B. Cust out of outfield to DH (until Thomas gets back). Hopefully, by then Chavez will be able to go back to 3B.

new infield scheme
Play Rajai at SS—whenever Chavvy catches a ground ball, he hands it to Rajai, who runs the ball across to first to beat the runner.

roster with M. Sweeney and Frank
Can someone please remind me what two position players are now on the roster but weren’t when the A’s were carrying three DH’s? In other words, if Frank and M. Sweeney came back today, who would go?
Only position player I can think of is Donnie Murphy...
There's no textbook for how to treat a geriatric tapir.
Carlos Gonzalez is one, I think.
If Frank comes back, there’s no need to bring M Sweeney back.
Root for the Giants? Not even if they're playing al-Qaeda!
That is correct CarGon was at AAA
Chavvy was on the 60 day DL, and Buck went down all at the same time
Roster stuff
Carlos Gonzalez is on the roster now, but was not on the roster then. Eric Chavez is on the roster now, but was not on the roster then. Rajai Davis is on the roster now, but was not on the roster then
Murphy is the back-up shortstop/second baseman. Hannahan is the back-up third baseman/first baseman.
Assuming no injuries and stints on the DL, either Rajai Davis or Emil Brown will be in the hot seat when Thomas comes back. Unless the A’s send down CarGo.
Rajai was definitely on the roster then...
He has been with the A’s since late April…way before Frank and Sweeney went DL.
Bring back Hammer.

There will be a massive debate after this game about trading/keeping Mr. Richard
"I was right and you were wrong." - Ray Fosse
Theres no debate...
he will be gone. Either he will be traded or leave cause we wont sign him. Pretty cut and dry. I dont want him to leave.. but this is the A’s we are talking about.
When will then be now? Soon.
or, we pick up his option and sign him to a 10M per year extension because he loves the A's so much
and he remains healthy for the rest of his career, wins several CY awards, and leads the A’s to a couple championships.
What?
Yep, nobody has a clue what he's throwing - well the new guy in the booth (Matthews?)
has conformed to the idea that he’s throwing simply fastballs and changeups (which happens to act like a split finger fastball).
Who really knows though.
Hannahan has gotten much better
I villified him for it earlier, but the dude went out and fixed it, or at least worked really hard.
So if Sweeney is out with an ankle injury
Does that mean that Buck, if his head is still attatched, will be recalled?
