Should the A’s want or get Brian Roberts?
Well I thought the game on Fox today was going to be decent but after DiceK was horrible and the new guy that the Sox just brought in K ed the first batter he faced then hung a slider that was hit over the Green Monster for a grand slam and all of a sudden its 8-0 Cards. While the game may not be over I have lost interest in it and started surfing the web and found this article, (some day I will learn how to make the hyperlink thing work and be able to just put link)
It talks about possible buyers and sellers as we near the much talked about trade deadline.
It lists the A’s among others, as possible sellers with Harden and Blanton being the big catches for team needing pitching and could bring another haul. Well looking through the players listed from the different teams got me to wondering how AN would answer the question posed in the title. Along with that what would it take it to bring Roberts to Oakland if that is what the A’s were to do?
Also are there any others on the list for those who jumped over to yahoo that the A’s should consider.
Note: Original Post title read “Should the A’s want or get Brain Roberts?” Hence the excellent work of Nico in comment #4

I'm convinced that every single sports writer for Yahoo is totally incompetent.
It’s painful to read these columns.

I don't understand where Brian Roberts would fit in
Are you getting him to replace Crosby? I mean I guess I’d be OK with that gamble, but Roberts hasn’t played SS in years and I don’t know how good of a SS he is anyways. Ellis was a SS in college and could probably slide to SS, but either way getting Roberts would require and in-season move of someone to SS that hasn’t played SS in years, and that seems like a scary proposition to me.

If the future of the A's does not have Ellis in them
Then wouldn’t it be at least an idea to see what you could get for him. I know that Ellis is a fan fav and could just as well be back next season. But if he is going to be gone next season someone will have to play 2B for Oakland so see title of post.

Roberts is only signed through '09 though
and Ellis would certainly be cheaper to resign than Roberts

I'd prefer Liver Roberts
or Spleen Roberts. Cokie Roberts, not so much.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal

If we are sellers, why would we get Roberts?
And if we arn’t Sellers, then we’d still have Ellis.
Ellis can not play Short Stop apparently because of the injury he sustained running into Bobby Crosby a couple years ago. But if the A’s got Roberts, it would be with an idea of him being our 2B of the future.
Pessimism FTW! ... Wait what?

And that's a weird idea to have because Ellis is just as valuable if not moreso
And the guys are the same age. Ellis is probably cheaper going forward, too.

Roberts is a free agent in 2009
He ain’t the second baseman of the future.

Why would the A's replace Ellis with a worse player who makes more money?
Children, until we have taught them better, will be perfectly happy with a seasonal round of games in which conkers succeeds hopscotch.

No to brian Roberts trade
Years ago BB was interested in picking up Roberts when he was cheap but now he cost $$$ and we are in a rebuilding mode. I’m sure that the O’s would want some good young prospects back as they are rebuilding also,

There is only one scenario I could see it working
1.) Mark Ellis was DEFINITELY not going to re-sign. (Unlikely to become clear during the season. The A’s might well be able to afford him.)
2.) Billy Beane can work something out such that he gives up roughly the same amount to get Brian Roberts that he gains from dealing Ellis
If the above two are true, then it would make sense to get a 2B through 2009. But I don’t see that happening.

No and no
Even if Mark Ellis breaks his leg.

To what end?
As the Orioles are going to demand prospects in exchange for Roberts, and the A’s will have to compete with other suitors, the price will be high. Would you be willing to risk the A’s future success to obtain a player who might make them a little better than they are now?

No
Roberts is overrated and not worth the short term lease. Now, if it was someone like Jason Bay, Nate McLouth, or Matt Holliday. We have a corner OF slot available for a power bat.
I’d be willing to give up Blanton (put Gaudin back in the rotation), but I’m a foolish A’s fan and would hang onto Harden for this run
It's just more exciting with Billy Beane running the team.

no way
BB wont be selling unless we fall off the face of the planet. we are still very much in contention. When big hurt comes back, our lineup will get a lift powerwise.
