I Think We Know Who the Team MVP Is
On a night when the Marlins huffed and puffed and almost blew our bullpen down (darn it, Paul Thomas, they did regress. And I feel mean about that), the 1st half MVP of the 2008 Oakland A's clearly emerged. Funny thing-- I think he deserved that honorific even before tonight's game.
Process of elimination: neither of our two best pitchers have thrown 70 innings yet. Our best relievers have all been hurt. Our closer is OK-- but not great.
Up the middle we have two valuable players-- both hitting around 250 and change, however. Chavy's only played for 3+ weeks; Our best all around OFer is coming off an injury. Our best power hitter is under 250, can't field and can't run.
SO.... Kurt Suzuki-- by virtue of playing nearly 90% of the time. By virtue of handling a pitching staff pretty darn well in your first full season. By virtue of the fact that you have gained the manager's confidence and now bat as high as 6th in certain lineups. And by virtue of the fact that you single-handedly won tonight's game and are now hitting close to 280-- you sir are our first half MVP.
And I don't think it's even a close call.

Hardball Times (and Bill James) Agrees with You
Their Win Shares order for the A’s is Cust, Ellis and Suzuki 3rd
I can live with that. And we all know that the catcher’s precise role in handling a pitching staff is hard to quantify. And of course i was reacting to a terrific game. But the guy doesn’t get talked about a lot and he has very quietly been putting up a pretty darn good year. So I’m not taking it back either

Thought this was interesting
“I would think he has mixed reviews over the young position players—and is thankful for the likes of Thomas, MSweeney and Brown to make this lineup do as well as it has. But he knows it is way too early for any definitive pronouncements over Barton (although come to think of it this was all the rope Pena got), Buck, Suzuki or even Hannahan.”

Just an opinion, man. You can’t deny what this guy has been doing at the plate. And behind it. Rollercoasters are fun—isn’t that what part of following a team is?? If we are all always consistent in what we say and check to see if a June pronouncement matches up to a May pronouncement which matched up to an April pronouncement—well, life would be pretty boring.
And as i said, last night got him noticed. I think he was the MVP even before it.

Though actually, what he's been doing at the plate has been...
...to tear it up for the last few games, but before that he’s been very up and down. Kind of like many of the others on the team. As hot as he is now, he’ll go through another cold spell at any time as he tries to become more consistent.
I’m not too big on rollercoasters.

MVP An over-rated Concept...
...that is at times as ambiguous as “team leader”.
MVP can have many impiications. Just look at ARod for the offensive numbers that have resulted in his attaining multiple awards. Yet, as baseball glorifies the individual achievements of players from so many standpoints, A Rod would be the first to tell you he'd trade them vor the ultimate team award- signified by a WS ring.
Beane's concept of developing versatility from a pitching, hitting and fielding concept in which the drop-off in talent doesn't diminish due to the ever looming injury is the best place to be able to try to identify any distinctive characteristics that define this team.
This team has to be broken down in terms of starting pitching and relief pitching with respect to the rest of the league, Street has not distinguished himself so much this year but if we look at the contributions of Brown/Cassilla/Embry/Foulke/ZIeggler etc the collective efforts can be considered "most valuable"
The same case could be made for our starters. Some are more heralded than others. Don't look now but while ZIto has what 11 losses for the Giants a our Blanton has 10. At face value that doesn't look good but scouts still love his stuff as his ERA gives a better picture of his value. I could make a case for Duke as MVP but that doesn't explain his run support which has potentially allowed him to pitch more comfortably than the other starters. His 1 hit domination of the Red Sox shouldn't be forgotten. Still many other factors have contributed to his success.
Offensively, it's hard to keep track with all of the injuries that have taken place as to who could be considered in the same light as say Giambi's MVP performance several years ago. The offense reminds me of our team that displayed the mediocrity of Billy Martin's BillyBall from 1980-81 in which we saw sizzling hot performances tempered by similarly cold ones. The consistency came as the team matured. This team is young and maybe a closer analogy would be 1999. Still to quantify or qualify any one player such as Suzuki or Ryan Sweeney or CGon is just way too premature and yet this type of conjecture will continue.
The more telling question of who hs been the most vlauable player for the A's as recognized by the rest of baseball will be tied to who gets promoted to the AllStar game. Duke is by far the front runner in that category. As MVP of this team, however, let's leave this discussion until November.

So madmongoose is oaktoon?
I’ve been away a long time and out of the loop. But reading for the last few days, I can definitely see the similarities in style, frequency, and subject matter.
As mikeA says, good to have you back. (And mike, if you read this, could you clarify the Salon reference for me.)
As for Suzuki as the MVP and it not being close—Wow! that’s why I used to love oaktoon: the wacky point based on a momentary impulse declared definitively.
I’d say, excluding the pitchers, the A’s don’t have an MVP. They have a bunch of guys clustered together all contributing in about the same way, with Cust and Ellis at the top so far.

Wow, simmer down people
If this guy wants to think Kurt Suzuki is the Team MVP, let him. Surely there are worse choices.
Honestly, I bet if you go into the clubhouse and poll the 24 other players as well as the coaches and trainers, I bet at least half would say Suzuki is indeed the team MVP.
Or, if you’d rather, you can keep ostracizing fellow A’s fans for having a supportive opinion of a player.

Again, he can speak for himself and leave the "we" out of it.

good for you
take that and run with it—it’s a legit discussion. If you go by Win shares, the candidates are a very good defensive middle infielder who has hit better of late but is still below his career numbers; a three true outcome offensive force who contibutes a lot at the plate but little else; or an everday ironman catcher handling a very good pitching staff whose bat has come alive a lot lately.
Pretty legitimate debate. I took a stand, but would love to hear others persent their views. My “authoritativeness’- if that’s really what it was- should hardly prevent someone from arguing for someone else.

Geez
There aren’t even really “Team MVPs”, and who gets called “Team MVP” by a group of people deciding who it is doesn’t even really matter. I don’t understand why people get so worked up over arguments like this. If it’s “too early” to talk about team MVPs, why not just stay out of the discussion and leave it to the people who enjoy talking about who the “Team MVP” is.
That’s why forums are threaded…you discuss the things you are interested in discussing, and ignore the things you are not.
I happen to strongly disagree with Suzuki being team MVP. Personally, my choice is Duchscherer—After his next start he should be the AL leader in ERA. But if you want Cust or Ellis, either are good choices, and I’d probably lean slightly towards Ellis.

"Dispatch knuckleheadedness with Bond-like aplomb." –74mk
by iglew on Jun 21, 2008 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
By my calculation 4ER in 5.2 IP is the limit to keep him ahead of Cliff Lee
and a 9IP shutout would have at like 1.83, still higher than Volquez.
Jeremy was safe. He jumped over the tag.
by mrrickyg on Jun 21, 2008 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just took a look
Even at 5 ER, Duke ends up with 2.52 ERA, still just a little better than where Lee is right now. If Lee has a decent game, 5 ER won’t cut it, and if Lee has a good game 4 ER might not either. (Shaun Marcum is also in range to beat that.)
If Duke gives up 3 ER in 5.2 IP he’s at ERA 2.28, which is pretty safe, though Lee could still match that by pitching 7.0 shutout innings.

Unless you mean it in an alter ego sort of way, to highlight their hidden similarities.
One thing PT and MM have in common is that they are both criticized for asserting their opinions with too much confidence. Also, both strongly resist effort by others to make them change their style, and both can take a lot of personal criticism without whining about it.
