Open Game Thread - Game 73: A's vs. Marlins
Rich Harden and the A's open up a three-game series with the Marlins tonight at the Coliseum. The Marlins will be throwing 6 foot-9 inch, 240-pound Mark Hendrickson, who sports a 5.74 ERA. Hendrickson is one of only 11 athletes in history to play in both MLB and the NBA.
The A's are starting arguably the greatest defensive lineup combination in baseball tonight, with Rajai Davis in CF, Carlos Gonzalez in right, and Ryan Sweeney in left, and the usual stellar infield. Let's hope they can get some hits, too.

seems like it must be one of those ‘covert maneuvers’ to push the cup around (i.e. bocro always pulling up his pants on his left thigh with his right hand) but i can’t see how he could make decent contact. hm.

I know it man
I hope Barton is the future but he has been pathetic the first half of 2008. Let me fill some A’s fans in, Barton had the second worst hitting May EVER in Oakland A’s history. Not worst Firstbaseman or Rookies but worst for any hitter ever in Oakland history. People put Emil brown down? They want Brown DFA? Brown has struck out less then Barton, has more hits, more XBH, more RBI’s, more Hr’s and better SLG %. Barton has more walks, walks are the only thing that Barton has down better then Brown, so why is Brown our scapegoat? Why are we(me included), so hard on Brown when guys like Barton cant hit either?

Harden's actually lost something. It's not just a pitch count move.

I never felt he had his "A game" today
But luckily his A- game is just fine.

Good move by Geren
Ziggy should pitch a lot in this series as the anti-HR. I don’t how Uggla got that ball out – not a bad pitch.

Ugh. This official scorer really, really has no clue about baseball
For the second straight year, whoever the A’s official scorer is just can’t seem to understand the concept of what an error actually is. He seems to be a part of that idiotic “if it touches your glove, you should make the play” school of thought that is really only preached by little league coaches who were bad athletes.
I know getting annoyed by an official scorer is a little trivial, but this guy is just plain terrible going on a couple years straight now (assuming it’s the same person).

You really shouldn't care about what is scored as an error....
It it mistake #1 as far as correctly thinking about baseball.

Back to Harden tonight
He had a lot of fly balls tonight from what the box score says, was that more of his control issues or good hitters?
by A'sfaninNC on Jun 20, 2008 8:49 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
he was leaving pitches up often and missing Zook's glove
I think he was lucky only to give up 1 homer… there were a few deep balls in the 5th.
by rebus on Jun 20, 2008 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He throws his fb high in the zone always, becuase it is tough to hit there;
he’s never going to get a lot of gbs.He was perhaps a bit off tonight, but still awesome as usual.

I think a lot of would-be swings and misses
at his high fastball were fly ball outs instead because he didn’t have quite the usual zip on it.
