Open Game Thread - Game 73: A's vs. Marlins
Rich Harden and the A's open up a three-game series with the Marlins tonight at the Coliseum. The Marlins will be throwing 6 foot-9 inch, 240-pound Mark Hendrickson, who sports a 5.74 ERA. Hendrickson is one of only 11 athletes in history to play in both MLB and the NBA.
The A's are starting arguably the greatest defensive lineup combination in baseball tonight, with Rajai Davis in CF, Carlos Gonzalez in right, and Ryan Sweeney in left, and the usual stellar infield. Let's hope they can get some hits, too.

Loaded the bases...
but still awsome pitching. Harden is a beast.
The A's colors are green and gold.
Remember the time Rich was pitching
to the Rangers after the AS break… and Rich was, like, totally kicking ass? And then he accidentally licked his fingers on the while he was on the mound? He was, like, totally behind in the count, but he came back to get the guy. Is was awesome.
"JOAN! Are you watching Bombast? Did you see Lack Bust drop that fly call?"
Is was?
hm anyway.. i never really notice Rich licking his fingers, he seems to lack a lot of those nervous moves a lot of other pitchers have. such confidence. then again maybe i’m just used to complete twitchy routine guys like Street licking his hand every pitch.
Wow.
That pitch sequence to Ramirez was fantastic. Second pitch on the hands @ 95, then back to the outside corner at the numbers? Not going to give up much doing that.
"My boyfriend drinks ALOT, you know, because he's a rebel."-Reyna
This lineup
would be incredible, if it could only score runs.
I wonder if they tell the starting pitchers, “look we gave you the best defense possible. Now don’t let that other team score any runs, please.”

i'm trying to figure out what's up with Rich pushing his belt down after every K
seems like it must be one of those ‘covert maneuvers’ to push the cup around (i.e. bocro always pulling up his pants on his left thigh with his right hand) but i can’t see how he could make decent contact. hm.
One of my friends has a habit of adjusting his belt alot too.
And when I asked him why, he laughed and said it was to direct the ladies’ eyes to a certain location.

I know it man
I hope Barton is the future but he has been pathetic the first half of 2008. Let me fill some A’s fans in, Barton had the second worst hitting May EVER in Oakland A’s history. Not worst Firstbaseman or Rookies but worst for any hitter ever in Oakland history. People put Emil brown down? They want Brown DFA? Brown has struck out less then Barton, has more hits, more XBH, more RBI’s, more Hr’s and better SLG %. Barton has more walks, walks are the only thing that Barton has down better then Brown, so why is Brown our scapegoat? Why are we(me included), so hard on Brown when guys like Barton cant hit either?

Ugh. This official scorer really, really has no clue about baseball
For the second straight year, whoever the A’s official scorer is just can’t seem to understand the concept of what an error actually is. He seems to be a part of that idiotic “if it touches your glove, you should make the play” school of thought that is really only preached by little league coaches who were bad athletes.
I know getting annoyed by an official scorer is a little trivial, but this guy is just plain terrible going on a couple years straight now (assuming it’s the same person).

You really shouldn't care about what is scored as an error....
It it mistake #1 as far as correctly thinking about baseball.
The A's colors are green and gold.
Back to Harden tonight
He had a lot of fly balls tonight from what the box score says, was that more of his control issues or good hitters?
he was leaving pitches up often and missing Zook's glove
I think he was lucky only to give up 1 homer… there were a few deep balls in the 5th.
He throws his fb high in the zone always, becuase it is tough to hit there;
he’s never going to get a lot of gbs.He was perhaps a bit off tonight, but still awesome as usual.
The A's colors are green and gold.
I think a lot of would-be swings and misses
at his high fastball were fly ball outs instead because he didn’t have quite the usual zip on it.

WTF? I go away for one hour, with Harden pitching and a 4-0 Lead at Home ...
This should not ever, ever happen…
Yahoo play by play has stopped working after Street came in
I take it someone hit a homer. Did the Marlins score again.
That was close...
I was getting excited!

If Crosby reaches I say we pinch hit Olmedo Saenz.

Why did they take Harden out in 6th?
Was he hurt? We had 3 run lead when he exited?
high pitch count

His pitching was all up
and he’d reached nearly 100 pitches. They don’t want him to go further than 100

First Walk of the Night
When the A’s don’t walk, they don’t win. But they just walked… puleeze.
It would be so nice
If somewhere in the middle of our lineup was someone who was, you know, likely to come through in the clutch
Doh
I knew there was a flaw in my thinking.
If he's alive - if not, they should pinch hit Hannahan

Suzuki couldn't even walk a minute ago and now he is going to bat....I hope that he is OK to bat..
There is no A in OFFENSE!!
scoring goes
Single, takes second on the throw to third.

CAn anyone give me an update? Yahoo and MLB GAmeday aint workin on Comp.
I take it Chavez and Crosby got on base?
2 outs?
crosby walked, chavez dunked one in, got extra bases when SS messed up the ball, Zook singled

You probably figured this out already
Yes, two outs, Crosby walked, Chavez got a single partly due to some less-than-astute fielding, and Suzuki doubled to score them both. A’s 6, Marlins 5.

Zook = team batting average leader.
Which is nice. Except that he’s hitting .270.
For now, though, all is forgiven
Question . . .
Can Street get the Win and the Save?

On vacation in Maine. No Internet radio or Direct TV
I am really not supposed to be following the A’s but she is asleep. The laptop won’t pick up MLB GAmeday and Yahoo stopped updating.
Sounds like a classic.
Thanks for any updates

might have gone to Ziggy too much in previous games.
We needed him to pick up Street, but he didn’t last long.

Nice play by Ellis
I know the Marlins have some good hitters, but Street just didn’t have it tonight.
All the bad hits were on bad pitches left right in the middle of the plate.
