Cito Gaston is back
In a shocking, SHOCKING, development, John Gibbons has been fired by the Blue Jays. They are bringing back Cito Gaston, and Gene Tenace is being promoted to hitting coach. The Blue Jays are a joke, but for some reason I'm interested in their moves. J.P. taking shots at Adam Dunn, a last place team, and a successful manager that hasn't had a job since 1997. It's like really really lame theatre.

I'd rather play Badmilton

Why is JP still employed?
He should’ve been fired within seconds after his uncalled for tirade against Adam Dunn, if not before.
Gibbons had to go though. Any manager who gets into confrontations with players on a regular basis isn’t long for his job when the team is in last place.

I actually have no problem with that deal
When the alternatives are Marco Scutaro and frigging John McDonald, you do what you have to. And there was no shortstop worth a damn on last year’s market. He didn’t tie the franchise to a long-term deal.
I mean, the Cardinals ended up with Cesar Izturis. Is that an upgrade?

What is with the reflexive hating of Eckstein?
$4.5M for Eckstein is a good deal. Eckstein has got to be among the players most underrated by “stat” based fans.

For me, it's the constant fellating of him by various broadcasters
Which, I guess, he can’t do anything about, but still.
I mean, it’s not like he’s the first undersized, scrappy player to ever succeed more on hard work than natural talent. I just don’t need some announcer telling me this every time I see him play.
He also needs another nickname. There’s only one “Eck” and it ain’t him.

Hiring Gaston
Hiring Gaston is the last act of a very desperate GM. Gaston is undoubtably popular in Toronto, since he did preside over two, TWO world series titles, not to mention the best years in Toronto Blue Jays history. However, he’s been out of managing for 10 years and I’m guessing he’s a bit rusty.
JP’s hiring of him is meant to be a way to get the jackals off him for a little while as they focus on how great it is to have Cito back. It won’t work, however, and JP will be gone soon enough. I give him until the end of the year.
7 years as GM with a .500 record? Not good enough.

wow, has it been 7 years already?
The one thing I’d be at all interested in seeing as a quasi-follow-up to Moneyball would be the overall role of ownership in MLB, and how it helps or hinders innovation in the front office. Beane has been extremely fortunate in experiencing the end of the benevolent Haas era (and working under Alderson) and the full-throated/deep-pocketed/share-granting support - and even the benign neglect of the “If it doesn’t cost us anything … wait - you mean it’ll save us money? Go for it! Whatever. Oh, and losing games and marketable players is a good thing.” Schott-Hoffman regime.
JP and DePo were not so lucky. Methinks (and mehopes) that Forst and Zaidi are keeping that in mind.

i don't think you can lump JP and DePo together like that
depo did a good job as gm and should not have been fired.
jp has been a mediocre gm for a long time now, and should probably have been fired last year.

also, the jp had less resistance to his ideas
from the organization and media, otherwise he wouldn’t have lasted so long even in apathetic toronto.
the problem is that his ideas were not particularly good.
but i do agree that guys like forst and zaidi (and antonetti from the indians) should think long and hard before they take a better job with another team.

JP was never exactly accepted much
by the Toronto media. Sure, he had no Plaschkes to deal with, but in his early days, Geoff Baker, currently covering the Mariners, greeted him with the JP is racist crap. And Richard Griffin has long been antagonistic towards JP.
