If Blanton is to be Traded, How about this Scenario
The Yankees have signed Sidney Ponson (to a minor league deal) and added him to their 40 man roster. This may take them out of the running for a stop gap SP aka Joe Blanton. I could be wrong but getting a current major league player for Blanton alone may be harder following his last few starts. But getting one or maybe a couple of quality minor leaguers for him is another story especially from a team that needs pitching. And since our 1b and most of the outfield is just up from AAA why not plug someone else from AAA in LF and move Cust to DH (if an OF was aquired) and see what they can do for us at least until Thomas and or Big Sweeny come back.
So going around looking for some prospects with some hitting ability, here are a few players in the minors that could help the A’s this season if they could be pried away from current parent clubs. Parent Clubs are in parentheses.
1b-Brad Eldred with the AAA Charlotte Knights-In 72 games he is hitting .261 with 24 HR and 68 RBI’s. Measurable 6’5” 275 and bats and throws R. (White Sox)
1b-Chris Richard with the AAA Durham Bulls-In 65 games he is hitting .316 with 13 HR and 42 RBI’s. Measurable 6’2” 210 and bats and throws L. (Tampa Bay)
1b-John Lindsey with the AAA Las Vegas 51’1-In 67 games he is hitting .325 with 14 HR and 55 RBI’s. Measurable 6’2” 245 and bats and throws R. (LA Dodgers)
3b-Dallas McPherson with the AAA Albuquerque Isotopes-In 66 games he is hitting .296 with 22 HR and 47 RBI’s. Measurable 6’4” 235 and bats L and throws R. (Florida) Note: a move to 1b would be in order here.
OF- Nelson Cruz with the AAA Oklahoma RedHawks-In 63 games he is hitting .348 with 21 HR and 57 RBI’s also 15/21 in SB. Measurable 6’3” 230 and bats and throws R. (Texas)
OF-Brent Clevlen with the AAA Toledo Mud Hens-In 58 games he is hitting .324 with 13 HR and 55 RBI’s. Measurable 6’42 190 and bats and throws R. (Detroit) Note: didn’t fair as well in 11 games with the Tigers but that was just a short call up
These would just be the key guy in a trade not the only ones should a trade go down. Meaning I have not looked beyond the main player to acquire so I don’t know who else would/could come along in a trade that was say Blanton for 2 or 3 (or more) young guys.
With the exception of Clevlen, no one else has been up this year to my knowledge. Also I know that AAA hitting does not translate to Major League hitting but if these guys were in our system they would be getting a look at the least or there would be talk of bring them up. And additional chip could be Calero.

+1000
The way Blanton has been pitching of late, You MROD, would have a better chance of winning the lottery three weeks in a row without buying a ticket than Blanton would of getting this team a win.
I think we can all agree that this team is way exceeding expectations of what we had when the season started but Blanton has 10 losses and I would think his trade value is a FLUSH away from being treated sewage.
So when you add everything up and consider all the injuries to key players, we have to be ecstatic and the icing on the cake would be to see Blanton gone or out of the rotation. Gaudin didn’t exactly pitch lights out last night but he could pitch better using his dick as an arm that the Fat Toad and his 10 losses has done to date.
Now I doubt Billy will trade Blanton because his value has greatly diminished and he won’t want to give him away and I would imagine that taking him out of the rotation would not help his value either so I guess we are screwed when he pitches.

Wow, overreact much?
This is a guy who had an ERA under 4 in 230 innings in the American League last year and suddenly a few bad starts and now he is a “Fat Toad” who has a guy in the pen who can pitch better with his “dick”.
His ERA was under 4 until 4 starts ago. Yes, he has hit a rough patch, no way to deny that, but you act like there is zero value there becase of a 4 start stretch. Just so short sighted, negative and really without any basis to your extreme and disgusting commentary.
As for the 10 losses you stress, 5 of those freaking losses were in starts where he gave up exactly 2 ER. Yea, those losses are a valuable measuer of his worth for sure.

by OaktownPower on Jun 19, 2008 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He is in a rough patch
How long it is going to last? I have no clue but his trade value is obviously going down. I hope another team is desperate for a starter and that Beane trades him.
He may be an inning eater but an ERA near 5 in not acceptable IMO especially when you have other alternatives as this team appears to have.
Now I chose to call him a Fat Toad as opposed to a POS. OK, I agree that is a little harsh but it might help the guy if he lost about 30lbs. It certainly couldn’t hurt. He is a well paid athlete.
by Trainman on Jun 19, 2008 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe he has a dead arm
I don’t know.
He misses location quite a bit. His slider is hanging and he is not getting the strike outs like he can do. I seem to remember when Blanton had those good second halves to his seasons that he would get ground ball after ground ball. In the first inning last night he got a grounder to Chavy that could have had a chance for a DP but Chavy appeared a little slow to react (Understandable considering his back) but he was leaving many balls up and they were being hit.
For whatever reason he is not pitching well. Of course I hope he gets it together but I would not be upset if he was traded and Gaudin was back in the rotation.

Math off a tad
103 IP118 Hits and 28 BB. That’s 146 baserunners 1.69 WHIP
Your baseline numbers are right, but that should result in a 1.42 WHIP. Still below league average, but not the abysmal stretch that a near-1.7 would suggest.

Right
Mikev asked what Beane’s demands were, and it seems like Beane was asking for those three. Evidently, Colletti wasn’t willing to go there. At the time, it seemed like an odd decision to hold up a trade for an A-ball shortstop with Furcal and Hu in front of him. With Hu suddenly looking like he couldn’t hit his way out of a styrofoam prison cell, and Blanton sucking pond water, it looks a lot better.
Then again, it’s not like the A’s are short of minimal-power shortstops with good batting eyes. De Jesus is pretty much the Latin version of Josh Horton.

Not sure
if you are being realistic about what we can get back for Blanton. 3-10 and a 5+ ERA is simply not that that attractive. I know he has been paired against other teams’ aces all year, but that only slightly mitigates a pretty terrible line.
I’ve been an advocate for trading Big Joe, but have realized two things in the last few days:
1. he doesn’t strike me as a guy you’d want starting a playoff game for your team, and
2. as much as I wish Gaudin was in the rotation, and Blanton is the obvious guy in the way, there are too many question marks with the current starters to be trading the only pitcher on our staff to throw 200+ innings.
I don’t see a deal going down until much closer to the trading deadline, and even then, it won’t happen unless Joe has improved his ERA (ie stops hanging 5-10 curveballs every outing), and the A’s are out of contention.

I agree here
and if a trade were to happen one would want a RH bat with some pop to go with all the LH OF we have now. And recalling Buck needs to wait until he has got his issues stratight or until next year. So with that said why not get one of the above guys (if possible). If nothing else you have a young up and comming bat that can hit AAA pitching. Best case you get a 1B or OF that can give you 25+ HR or more a year.

You know,
Blanton strikes me as being far more valuable to us than to other teams at the moment. Sure, Gaudin’s an intriguing possibility as a starter, but the rest of our rotation consists of injury-bait named Harden and Duke, plus two kids in Smith and Eveland.
Blanton’s cheap, he’s generally going to keep you in ballgames, and he’s durable. Kinda like Zito before he went across the Bay.

Ugh, what a list.
Eldred is a AAAA hitter. He’d be the second coming of Dan Johnson. We all know how well Dan Johnson ended up here.
Chris Richard is THIRTY-FOUR years old!!! Not a prospect and not someone who you’d want to get back for Blanton.
Lindsey is like Richard, only three years younger, which still makes him too old. We need people with actual upside, not middle aged MLB players demolishing minor league pitching
McPherson: Busted top prospect who couldn’t win the job in LA when it was handed to him. He’s also struck out 86 times this year in 66 games and 121 times in 117 major league games. We already have Jack Cust for this.
Cruz: Probably the best of the lot so far, he’s flashing a lot of tools right now, but where does he fit in the outfield? We’re already stocked with younger, more talented guys, might as well let them play and get their experience in. If we could trade Emil Brown for Cruz, that might be a different story.
Clevan: Actually resembles a prospect. But you don’t trade your opening day pitcher for a 4th outfielder.
What we need is someone with some upside. I’d suggest trying to get Homer Bailey from the Reds. He looks like he’s got a bad case of Gavin Floyd syndrome. Top top pitching prospect who probably just needs a change in scenery. If it works out, we have a new top pitcher. If not, well, he wont the THAT much worse than Blanton.

Well, part of the problem with the list
is that they’re all 1st Base & Corner outfield “prospects” and really, we’re fairly stacked in the minors/majors in those spots. What we need are middle infield prospects and pitching never hurts.
