Grist for the Mill: "Team source" on Street

Mychael Urban has a brief but keenly interesting article up about Street's status and injury. The key passage:

Star-divide

A team source said early last week that Street, who has allowed one run over his past nine outings and ranked fifth among AL relievers with a 33 strikeouts, has been dealing with the strain since being used in the ninth inning of a 13-8 victory on June 1 at Texas.

"He just wasn't feeling great physically, and he asked not to be used that day unless there was a save situation," said the source. "But I guess a six-run lead in Arlington, some people see that as a save situation."

"This is a big-inning ballpark," Geren said after Street entered the game with the A's holding a six-run lead.

He threw 18 pitches in 90-degree weather and allowed a solo homer to Josh Hamilton.

"My job is to pitch when they give me the ball," Street said, "and I take the ball whenever I can."

There are two really interesting aspects to this, in my view. First (obviously), if this is true it reflects very badly on Geren. The almost gratuitous risking of a key player with a six-run lead is so clearly wrongheaded that you almost have to believe there was some miscommunication involved. I mean, what does "wasn't feeling great physically" mean, anyway? Maybe Geren checked again before the 9th and Street said he was willing to go in - that is, Geren checking to see if the condition still existed and Street interpreting it as a request to soldier up and pitch. (I'm making this scenario up out of whole cloth merely as an example of how something that seems incredible might be more explainable when more facts come out - if they do - so please don't confuse this with what the quotes actually said.) But even if it was miscommunication of some sort, it doesn't look good.

The second interesting thing is that this "team source" (doesn't that locution usually mean staff? Isn't an anonymous player usually referred to at least as a player?) with his rather biting "some people see that as a save situation" comment, is clearly taking a slap at Geren. (Another possible miscommunication: the source thinks it's off the record, but it isn't?) I don't want to go all tabloid here; this could amount to something quite minor, and in any case we can't hope to approach the level of entertaining dysfunction that you see in Seattle these days. Still, the issues this brief piece brings out are not trivial.

Where there is smoke there is fire?

Though still not acceptable, let’s hope it was miscommunication. But still, some of the blame would fall on Street. He should have just said, “Skip, I’m not ready” and been done with it.

Any premier athlete who said that

Would be ripped for being soft. Catch 22, but very few guys would say they cant buck up and go.

I agree, but

both Street (after the ulnar nerve injury) and Harden (this year) have stated they will nut push themselves for one game at the risk of the missing the season and that they would let their body tell them whether to go or not.

Let’s see Casilla finish up the year strong and I would say Street’s expendable

I'm surprised the "source" didn't call Geren a "tired act"

So, who had 6/11 in the Urban tries to stir up some sh#$ pool?

I remember that game and thinking WHY??

We were up by quite a few runs and I thought what the heck??

I have not been impressed with the manager much this year.

Didn't Billy Beane, HIMSELF say there is no A's source but him and

David Forst? So who is Urban talking to? When is the Enquirer going to finally hire Urban. He seems to want to specialize in the tell all expose.

by theblackpearl on Jun 11, 2008 9:36 AM PDT   0 recs

I think that's in the context of front office moves

Beane and Forst would be the only ones authorized to speak about – and even to know about – personnel moves such as trades. Beane was saying that if a reporter (Rick Hurd of the CC Times at the time, IIRC) didn’t get it from one of those two, then he got it from someone who didn’t and couldn’t know what he was talking about.

But of course, there are plenty of people in a position to know about this particular situation, so this could be perfectly accurate, although it’s clearly unofficial and unauthorized.

While Urban is stirring the pot a bit with this… Well, the reporters aren’t employees of the A’s and we don’t want them suppressing news just to keep from embarrassing management, do we? We’re all interested in how the pitching staff is handled, and if there are conflicts about injury management and the like… that cerainly qualifies as news. I know I’m interested.

how are you going to keep getting information

if you become notorious for outing your sources…especially if you know they want to remain anonymous? i’m just sayin

how did I not beat you to this reply?

Is it prurient? I don’t know what to tell you. I think it’s odd and interesting. It’s part of life. @('.')@
