A bunt is probably not a bad idea there

It's a very bad idea.
We have 15 outs left, 12 before Rivera, and guys coming up who don’t hit for a great batting average. The problem wasn’t swinging away, the problem was hitting a grounder to third instead of, say, through the hole to right (like his first AB).

The Yankees are a good hitting team
you cant expect the A’s pitchers to throw a shutout from here on out. This offense is going to have to score more runs sooner or later or just hope to get lucky. No pitching staff is going to be great on every single night.
by asfaninpismobeach on Jun 10, 2008 8:37 PM PDT up reply actions
Actually, I do.
As long as Eveland can get through the 6th, I have confidence that the bullpen can shut the Yankees down for 3 innings. The A’s bullpen is pretty damn good, you know.

The bullpen is good but
cant expect the A’s or any other team to hold the Yankees offensive to 2 runs a ball game. Isnt that kind of high expectations?

All I ever hear
on this web site is how the A’s are better then they are hitting this year. Cant the same be said for the Yankees?
by asfaninpismobeach on Jun 10, 2008 8:43 PM PDT up reply actions
I wouldn't have expected that in the first inning
But as the game goes on and they aren’t scoring runs, their run expectation goes down.
Of course, they could put up a 5 spot in this inning. But I don’t see anything wrong with trying to play for a tie game going into the second half of the game.

On the "not bunt":
Ok, I called for it, but it’s not an easy call one way or the other. Who knows? That dp was very predictable, but bunting with a runner on first down 1 run at that point in the game is generally very bad, especially against the Yankees who are likely to do more scoring. The fact that the predictable dp happened doesn’t really prove anything. I still would have bunted, but I don’t think any of us know the right decision there.
The A's colors are green and gold.
I'd go with how the pitcher does out of a stretch
with a runner at second….I guess Ellis was there twice, with no effect…so, ...
I still want Zook to bunt there! He’s still not swinging well.

Well...
1) I don’t know how good Wang/Posada is at preventing steals, which is a pretty big factor;
and
2) It’s pretty rare to see a steal in the first few pitches, so Suzuki was going to have to do something.
That said:
I hate the hit and run. Hate it. hateithateithateit..
But a hit and run there very well may have been the best call over any of bunt, steal, or hit away. At least the gb doesn’t hurt.
The A's colors are green and gold.
I like the hit-and-run best
against sinkerball pitchers. Open up one side of the infield, let the hitter shorten up the swing, and use the pitcher’s strength – pitching to contact – against him.

I would have liked to see the A's
take alot more pitches tonight. I mean the ump has a tight zone, Wang has really struggled coming into this game and the A’s dont really have any good contact hitters. Now Wang is under 60 pitches and could save the bullpen for the next 2 days. I guess on some nights that you have to try and win with hits instead of walks

Yes and no... guess it's all in the way you look at it
As long as the bunt wasnt’ directly back to the pitcher it would take a perfect play to get the force at the plate. If they get the runner at the plate I doubt they could turn a DP. You have two outs and another chance to score…. Also looking down the road, it couldn’t hurt to actually put the thought in the opposition that they did try a squeeze
To avoid the force at the plate,
you either need to start the runners (really dumb) or push it to SS or 2B. If the 1B or 3B fields it, it’s an easy force at the plate.

I was certain that Seattle was going to get beat again. I was surprised
That would be a good idea
but they way Suzuki is in the clutch, he would have popped into a DP trying to do so

No, they aren't,
we have someone to share them with. The highs, the lows, the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat.

When the fuck
is Geren gonna start to think outside the box people? 4 dpls tonite and you could almost feel that last one coming on…...disgusted!!!!!
We would have been better off sending Elli on CG’s base hit and taking our chances…............I’m totally beside myself!!!!!
I hear you but holding him was correct
The players need to learn how to hit the ball to the outfield for a sacrifice
yeah Kurt should have taken strike three

How many damn rally killers has Suzuki caused this year?
I hate him so much! All he had to do was get a fly ball at the worst, but he couldnt even do that. He had to get a DP ball to end the rally. Boy Suzuki really sucks. Heck, I think Rob Bowen deserves more playing time. Yea thats right Rob Bowen!
It's Been A Great Year! Thanks Warriors!
HIs numbers don't justify him playing over Bowen as much as he does
I like Suzuki but I think Bowen should get some more starts. Hey maybe the competition might motivate him.
Especially with Bowen
a switch-hitter. That alone should give him more games against RHPs.

Well Geren was a Catcher
so I would assume that Bowen really really sucks because he has had 31ab’s in 60+ games.

I know we can win this
The Yanks have had many rallies killed as well. They must be frustrated only getting 2 runs after all of those walks by Eveland
How about after we score about 5 runs first

You know...
I’ve had it with Suzuki. He either needs to change his swing, or he has to be replaced with anyone.

i can't believe dana actually lowered his ERA tonite

Actually I would

From here on
with runners on and one out lets just take the out and move on if Kurt is up. At least we would still be in the inning.

should just be a good team player and ask for a pinch hitter

But Geren's a great manager
I wonder if a reporter asks him why Suzuki was not PH for. I am sure there is one who has the balls to ask him that.
He will of course say the correct thing to the media like, “we trust Kurt in those situations, he’s going to come out of it”
So I guess I just answered my own question. A waste of time asking him when he’s going to lie anyway
Or, he might say:
“Why the hell would we want to put in a career .223 hitter with a career OPS of .672?”
President and CEO of the Ryan Sweeney Apologists Consortium
His career mark is .677
But regardless, he has a better contact rate than Bowen.

Have you been paying attention to the games?
Suzuki has played in like 850 games in a row. He needs a break.
Pinch-hitting for your catcher with a crappier catcher is not a great managerial move

even Emil Brown is and was a better propositon that Suzuki

As I posted earlier "0-10 from Barton, Buck and Hannahan"
That is why we lost and have not won more games this year.
The injury to Mike Sweeney probably cost us at least 2 wins this year. The loss of Thomas cost us another win or so.
The team can’t win with 3-4 holes in the line-up
Pretty much correct there
Hurry back Frank Thomas and Swooney
Absolutely
We can put him in Left field, Cust in Right field, C. Gon in CF. R. Sweeney as back-up.
