DLD 5/9/08 - HB, P! (not HBP)

Happy Friday! And I think there's a Happy Birthday Girl lurking (okay, not-so-lurking, as lurking implies "silent") among us... Wheeeeee! :)

This'll be quick (that's what he said) because I'm trying to speed through my semi-job training program so I can finish it and start the actual semi-job, which pays slightly more after I "graduate" the training.

If you haven't August 31 already read August 31baseballgirl's AN Day V diary, and August 31 voted on August 31 a date, please August 31 do so. No pressure.

Oh, bloody heck. I just remembered that I can't make italics in WYSIWYG. So this'll now be even shorter than it was originally going to be. I have to use the HTML editor.

While I was reading this Press Democrat article about the goings-on with the Stockton Ports, I got sidetracked by another headline on the side: "Camel Slapper selling shoes on eBay". I'm very easily sidetracked. I'm also sorry the guy didn't slap a llama instead.

Joe Blanton updated his blog a couple of weeks ago. Where've I been? And where's his proofreader?

I have a question for a sports physiology person ...rfloh... (or anyone else, really... maybe rfloh doesn't know what the hell he's talking about, either, but he bullshits with such confidence that I'm convinced! LOL) Anyway... the question: Is the Perfect Pushup really a good idea? It seems to me that squeezing handles and rotating your arms like that while doing pushups would be badly stressful for your wrists and hands. I'm just curious. No, I am not buying a set of those, or entering to win some at an A's game. Please.

Okay, sorry for the dearth of links, but I have more of a day than I'd like to have. Do commence dumpage!

I bought the Perfect Pushup

things about a month and a half ago. I haven’t had any trouble with pain in the joints, but the handles are not padded at all. You wouldn’t think that would hurt all that much, but it does. So if there is anyone out there considering buying them, I would strongly urge you to consider sticking with the old reliable way of doing pushups.

by JediLeroy on May 9, 2008 1:19 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I've actually strongly considered buying them

Supposedly, the rotation is proper form – when one is doing dumbbell presses, you’re supposed to be rotating the dumbbells 90 degrees inward if I recall correctly … perfect pushup basically allows you to do this via pushup .. that said, I could imagine the handles would be kinda hard with the weight of the upper body behind them .. the backs of your fists are supposed to remain parallel to your forearms, right? That should contain most of the pressure to the fleshy part below your thumbs.

by Rickeyfan on May 9, 2008 2:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Re presses with dumbells

there’s no real “correct form”. The main rule when thinking about form when lifting weights, is: what are you lifting the weights for?

“Correct from” when lifting weights is dependent on your goals.

mlb.tv Q:

Last time I watched an archived game, it popped up with a highlight list right there, which was very irritating, and I couldn’t figure out how to hide it. (I saw “Cust HR” and thus was rooting for him to fail when he came up with the bases empty, which was odd). Anyone know how to solve this?

The A's colors are green and gold.

by mikeA on May 9, 2008 11:52 AM PDT   0 recs

I haven't tried this on the replays

but in live streaming if you put your cursor over the screen area you can pick from 3 different screen views. If you pick the tiny one (in the middle) the only thing you’ll see is the little “screen” of the game.

You’d have to ignore the highlights for a couple seconds, but that should do the trick. Full-screen view would work, too.

by Nick on May 9, 2008 12:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Ok, that worked. Thanks

The A's colors are green and gold.

by mikeA on May 9, 2008 12:47 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I almost always have to catch the replay

and for a while it was a test to not see the score of the game on the A’s website. Then once I opened mlb.tv, it was a test to not see the highlight list. All you need to see is something like “Bedard K’s 9”, or something that pretty much sums up the game, to make it an entirely futile effort.

So when it first opens, when you have to put in your email and password, I move the window so the highlight list is covered (off the screen). That pretty much does it for me.

Then you have to remember not to open AN, since now we have the linescore on the front page.

Lew Wolff: impotent small businessman, buffeted by market forces beyond his control or reckoning

From Slusser’s A’s Notes this morning:

The A’s success hasn’t translated at the box office. The A’s are averaging below 20,000 per game, 26th out of 30 teams, and that’s including two crowds of more than 40,000 at the Tokyo Dome.

“It’s very rough,” Wolff said. “We never filled up for the playoff games two years ago, and we didn’t pick up any season tickets the next year. People wonder why we can’t keep our free agents, but where were they when we were that close to the World Series? We have a ballpark issue and we’re the second team in a two-team market. It drives me crazy, but I don’t know what to do besides working on getting a new, modern ballpark. Billy and the guys on the team deserve better attendance for the product they put on the field.”

Now, am I crazy, or did the first version of this article at sfgate early this morning have a much-truncated version of Wolff’s quote, ending at “I don’t know what to do.”? Anyone have the dead-tree version to check what went on press?

I don't think Lew is exactly right on 2006 playoff attendance

I was at both games and they showed them as being sold out on the Jumbotron. And it sure looked sold out to me.

by roscoe on May 9, 2008 7:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Seriously.

The Coliseum was vibrating, packed to the gills, it was awesome!

"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."

by Kyli on May 9, 2008 10:10 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

that's true, I was there

I was there for Games 1 and 5 of the 2003 ALDS as well. Both games appeared sold out as well—and that was including the entire third deck, so we’re talking 50,000+. (I was about five rows from the very top, so could see the rest of the stands pretty well.)

by OaklandSi on May 10, 2008 11:59 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

And the playoff games that didn't sell out

if memory serves me right, were the ones where MLB futzed around with the schedule so that potential ticket buyers found out only two or three days before the actual game that it was going to be held at 1 PM on a Tuesday.

Last offseason, Beane, 46, traded pitching ace Dan Haren and outfielder Nick Swisher, and parted ways with catcher Mike Piazza, a future Hall of Famer. Outfielder Shannon Stewart left, as did pitcher Ruddy Lugo, among others.

They are in the "left" as opposed to "traded" category;

I’m sure it was a brutally difficult decision as to who would headline that list between Lugo, Melhuse, and Colby Lewis. As always, Melhuse can’t catch a break.

Ruddy Lugo???

I was going to say, “Relevance, your honor?” but I looked it up… and he actually pitched 27 innings last year. Knock me over with a spoon.

Of course, the orignal point holds - Does ANYONE care that 1.) We had Ruddy Lugo, and/or 2.) think the lack of a Left Handed Lugo makes a bit of difference (OK, I know he’s a righty, but the phrase works better this way. I’m getting used to the Yankee’s -- never mind the facts)?

While I'm at it.....

I’m feeling some Stewart h8 nostalgia….
My big jolly bus of Stewart h8 (with a rainbow painted on the side) keeps picking up new passengers by the side of the road:
mgl:

Another everyday player (I think) who is near replacement-level (though not quite as bad as Griffey) is Shannon Stewart. I had not realized that until Rob Neyer mentioned it in his recent chat on ESPN.com.
At first, I figured he said that (that Stewart should not be playing) because he was having a bad 2008 (everyone who is having a bad 2008 who is not a bona-fide superstar or star "should not be playing," right?), but that he was still a decent player, according to his projection.
But, no, Rob was right. While he IS having a bad season (-29 lwts per 150), he also had a near replacement level projection before the season started, and it is even worse now. He is -2 in UZR, zero in baserunning, and -10 in hitting. In the AL, he gets 2 WAR for being league average, so that puts him at 8 RAR. Throw in his position (LF) and he is replacement level or worse.

The A's colors are green and gold.
