DLD 5/7/08: Blah

I'm having a crappy week, so I need a DLD. The Monday one is, well, from Monday. Today is Wednesday. What happened to Tuesday?

Here's some links. Y'all have to provide more.

  • This headline scared the crap out of me. I closed the windows in case they were flying around here. Then I realized that "lost" did not mean missing.
  • Penguins  always makes me smile.
  • I didn't realize this was still on tv. Does anyone even watch that channel?
  • If you are going to steal candy bars, don't eat them until after you get away....
  • I wish I knew about this website years ago. Brilliant idea. Brilliant.

12:35 game time today. Thank goodness. Until then, dump away....

6 or fewer seems to be the big challenge. They need to be named Ed or Al or Bo or Cy.

Rick Ankiel

Apparently it’s easier to accurately throw 300 feet to a 3B than it is 60 feet 6 inches to a catcher.

Those are 2 of the better throws I’ve ever seen. Right up there with the Ichiro! laser from RF to 3B to nail (I think) Jeremy Giambi. I wish I could find that clip.

by mikev on May 7, 2008 9:41 AM PDT   0 recs

Bo Jackson

threw an A out at the plate on a fly ball near the warning track—my memory of it is that he threw the ball about 300 feet on the fly to the catcher. Does anyone else remember that?

Who, praytell, would take Crosby's place?

I’m not sure Frank Thomas has the range at this stage in his career.

Jeter

Hey, we've finally found a shortstop that Jeter is better than:

Frank Thomas.

Does Bobby Crosby cRoss Dress for Less?

by ohtobe21likehuston on May 8, 2008 10:47 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Petit?

I’d almost be willing to give Crosby away at this point, just so that the team would spend the year actually evaluating the SS position instead of blocking it with a lame duck who’s mediocre anyway.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on May 7, 2008 10:07 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

He'd probably be worse

Significantly? I dunno.

I’d still rather see what the team has in Petit. If the team is going to make a free agent splurge at shortstop, the time for it is this offseason.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on May 7, 2008 11:01 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Who would you suggest throwing a bucket of money at?

According to Cot’s Baseball Contracts these are the potential SS free agents this offseason:

Orlando Cabrera CWS
Alex Cintron CWS
Alex Cora BOS
Craig Counsell * MIL
Adam Everett MIN
Rafael Furcal LAD
Cristian Guzman WAS
Cesar Izturis STL
Ramon Martinez LAD
Edgar Renteria * DET
Juan Uribe CWS

There’s nobody on that list I want to see a big dollar multi year contract offered to.

by mikev on May 7, 2008 11:09 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd take Furcal

I...drink...your...milkshake! I drink it up! - Daniel Plainview

by methodrampage on May 7, 2008 11:13 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

That's a rather strong group

We can assume Renteria will not be part of it, but even looking at the rest, I see 1 likely All-Star, 2 solid starters (assuming Guzman’s post-LASIK hitting improvement is real) and 3 or 4 decent starters. If the Tigers decline Renteria’s option that would add one more to the solid starter group.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on May 7, 2008 11:16 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

They're almost all on the wrong side of 30.

I’d be concerned with giving a 4 year deal to most of those guys – pretty likely that they’re all going to start declining sooner than later isn’t it?

by mikev on May 7, 2008 11:20 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, consider the following year's class

Tejada
Jack Wilson (maybe)
Renteria

and a bunch of crap.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on May 7, 2008 11:53 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

All the more reason to target somebody like Hu, Lillibridge, or Brignac

as a return for a potential deal involving Blanton or Street.

by mikev on May 7, 2008 11:58 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Misrecalled

Khalil Greene is part of that group too.

I’d be OK with signing him, I guess.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on May 7, 2008 12:02 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Khalil Green is like the NL version of Crosby

Might as well just give Crosby an extension

by mikev on May 7, 2008 12:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Um

No.

Greene’s career OPS+ is 99. Crosby’s is 86.

He’s also a better defender.

Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.

by PaulThomas on May 7, 2008 12:06 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Okay so he's Crosby with a bit more pop.

They both have bad OBPs but Greene has a better SLG.

Not that I’d be opposed to signing him because I love Fast Times at Ridgemont High and having Spicoli on the team would rule.

by mikev on May 7, 2008 12:10 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

He's much better than Crosby

home ops (career in petco): .654
road ops: .832
